Long-term results of orthotopic neobladder reconstruction after radical cystectomy.

BACKGROUND: Immunobullous diseases are uncommon in childhood. In contrast to adults, the most commonly seen is IgA-mediated chronic bullous disease of childhood (CBDC), while IgG-mediated bullous pemphigoid (BP), cicatricial pemphigoid (CP) and epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA) are rare. We have demonstrated both IgG and IgA autoantibodies to basement membrane zone target antigens in eight children with 'mixed immunobullous disease of childhood'. OBJECTIVES: To elucidate whether a dual antibody response makes these patients distinct regarding their presentation, immunopathology, course an

Rotundovaginopexy in orthotopic ileal neobladder following radical cystectomy in women.

PURPOSE: The technique of rotundovaginopexy after cystectomy in females is described. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four cases, two of them with over 12 months of follow-up are presented in whom this technique was used. RESULTS: Rotundovaginopexy stabilizes the vagina and thus prevents descent of the neobladder. Therefore the position of the neobladder is truly orthotopic. Thus continence and micturition are optimized. CONCLUSIONS: With this technique a truly orthotopic neobladder position can be achieved. The technique is simple to accomplish, even if hysterectomy has been performed long before.

Toxic shock syndrome after pilonidal cystectomy. Report of a case.

Toxic shock syndrome is an uncommon disease associated with staphylococcal infections. Although most frequently reported in menstruating women and associated with tampon use, toxic shock syndrome has been described following many types of surgical procedures. In this report we describe a case of toxic shock syndrome occurring in a previously healthy young man after elective surgery for a pilonidal cyst.

Salvage cystectomy for bladder and gynaecologic cancer after irradiation failure.

From November 1981 through 1983, salvage cystectomy was performed on five men with recurrent bladder carcinoma after definitive irradiation; three of the men were 75 years or older. There were no deaths, but the complication rate was fairly high, though acceptable. Salvage cystectomy was further performed, together with radical extirpation of reproductive organs, in two women with recurrent gynaecologic malignancy and a history of local irradiation. The authors conclude that salvage cystectomy is a fairly safe procedure, even in elderly patients, relieving discomfort and probably also prolongi

Contemporary morbidity and mortality of open versus robotic cystectomy for bladder cancer: An analysis of the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) procedure targeted cystectomy database.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association between surgical modality (RARC vs. ORC) and the risk of 30-day complications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We utilized the American College of Surgeons-National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS-NSQIP) Cystectomy-Targeted database from 2019 to 2021. The primary outcome was a composite of major complications including 30-day mortality, reoperation, cardiac events, and stroke. Secondary outcomes included individual major and cystectomy-specific complications. Propensity score matching (PSM) was employed to minimize inherent differences within our cohor

The Effect of the Area Deprivation Index on Surgical Outcomes for Benign Cystectomy.

INTRODUCTION: The impact of socioeconomic status (SES) on surgical outcomes is often underrecognized. Benign cystectomy (BC) for nononcologic bladder disease carries high morbidity but remains understudied. We evaluated the effect of SES on postoperative outcomes and healthcare utilization following BC. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all BCs performed at our institution from 2012 to 2025. Neighborhood-level socioeconomic disadvantage was measured using the area deprivation index (ADI; scale 1-10), with higher scores indicating greater deprivation. Patients were stratified into deciles (

Laparoscopic Partial Cystectomy for Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor of the Urinary Bladder.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) of the bladder is a rare benign tumor characterized by atypical spindle cell proliferation and inflammatory cell infiltration, typically involving lymphocytes and plasma cells. CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old woman presented with micturition pain and urinary frequency. Cystoscopy revealed an elevated tumor with edematous mucosa on the anterior bladder wall. Transurethral resection confirmed IMT of the bladder but was incomplete, prompting laparoscopic partial cystectomy with cystoscopy guidance. At 2-year follow-up, the patient remained

Bowel regimens before radical cystectomy: An analysis of a modern cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Bowel regimens (BR) before radical cystectomy (RC) are currently not recommended by Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols, as prior studies have shown BRs lead to worsened outcomes. However, many of those studies have used historic literature before recent surgical advancements such as minimally invasive RC and have not investigated the impact BRs have by type of urinary diversion. Our goal is to determine the outcomes of preoperative BR in patients undergoing RC based on diversion type using a modern patient cohort. METHODS: RCs performed between 2019 and 2020 with B

[A Case of Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor of The Bladder Treated with Partial Cystectomy].

A 60-year-old woman with extensive hematuria visited our hospital. Cystoscopy revealed a tumor with an edematous surface on the left lateral wall of the urinary bladder. To diagnose the tumor, we performed a transurethral resection of the bladder tumor. Pathological examination suggested leiomyoma. Four weeks after the transurethral resection, magnetic resonance imaging revealed an increase in the bladder tumor. She received partial cystectomy. Pathological analysis revealed an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor. No recurrence was observed 9 months after the initial operation.

Significance of prophylactic urethrectomy at the time of radical cystectomy for bladder cancer.

BACKGROUND: Prophylactic urethrectomy at the time of radical cystectomy is frequently recommended for patients with bladder cancer at a high risk of urethral recurrence without definitive evidence. The present study attempted to clarify the survival benefits of performing prophylactic urethrectomy. METHODS: We identified 214 male patients who were treated by radical cystectomy with an incontinent urinary diversion in our seven institutions between 2004 and 2017. We used propensity score matching and ultimately identified 114 patients, 57 of whom underwent prophylactic urethrectomy (prophylact

Partial cystectomy for muscle-invasive bladder cancer: a review of the literature.

The radical cystectomy (RC) for muscle-invasive bladder cancer is one of the most morbid and complex urologic procedures performed today. To avoid these complications, the partial cystectomy (PC) has been offered as an alternative in carefully selected patients as a means of achieving equal oncologic efficacy with less morbidity. Selection criteria should include solitary tumors without concomitant carcinoma in situ (CIS) and amenable to resection with 1-2 cm margins in a normally functioning bladder. In addition to the standard work-up, random bladder and prostatic biopsies may be performed.

Successful Treatment of Urinary Bladder Hemangiosarcoma by Partial Cystectomy in a Dog.

A 6 yr old neutered male German shepherd dog was evaluated at a veterinary referral hospital following diagnosis of uroabdomen of unknown origin. A positive-contrast retrograde urethrogram identified diffusely irregular margins of the urinary bladder but no active leakage of urine into the peritoneal cavity. An abdominal ultrasound identified severe thickening and loss of wall layering of the apex of the bladder. The dog was initially managed with an indwelling urinary catheter; however, when the catheter was removed 5 days later, the dog developed a recurrent uroabdomen after an episode of dy

[Laparoscopic radical cystectomy: novel technique with late dividing of the ureters].

INTRODUCTION: Despite considerable progress during last decade, laparoscopic radical cystectomy (LRC) still remains a complex and time-demanding procedure. The number of patients with baseline chronic kidney diseases has gradually increased. AIM: to compare the results of our novel technique of LRC with late dividing of the ureters with conventional procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 50 patients with bladder cancer, who underwent to LRC in a single clinic between April 2013 and January 2017, were included in the study. A conventional LRC was performed in 25 patients, while in other
