Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) are important agents in the control of intracellular pathogens, which specifically recognize and kill infected cells. Humoral and cellular immunologic parameters were evaluated in 13 prepuberal cryptorchid boys before, during and 3 months after hCG therapy. Before treatment, all the immunologic parameters were normal except for a higher percentage of T suppressor-cytotoxic cells (CD8+). During therapy, the percentage of CD8+ cells and lymphocyte response to ConA significantly decreased, and returned to the control level after hCG withdrawal. The possible effects of long-term hCG treatment on the immune system remains to be determined.

Despite recent advances in immunology, several key parameters determining virus dynamics in infected hosts remain largely unknown. Human blood platelets, incubated with the serum from patients with schistosomiasis or allergic asthma, became cytotoxic for schistosome larvae, in an allergen-specific mechanism linked to surface bound IgE on platelets. Cytotoxic factors, among which oxygen metabolites might be involved, were able to kill schistosomula through platelet-retaining filters. Flow cytometry showed that platelets bearing IgE receptors represented a subpopulation, the percentage of which significantly increased in patients with high levels of circulating IgE.
