Validation of an ICD-9-CM-Based Monitoring Tool for Regional Trauma Systems: The PaTraME Study in Pavia Province, Italy.

Background/Objectives: Continuous trauma-system monitoring is limited by the lack of scalable, low-cost tools. The Pavia Trauma Management Epidemiology (PaTraME) project uses routinely collected ICD-9-CM discharge data (SDO) and the Trauma Mortality Probability Model (TMPM) to derive Injury Severity Score (XISS) and probability of death (TMPM-POD), creating a cost-free surveillance framework for regional trauma networks. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of all major-trauma admissions (XISS > 15) in Pavia Province from 2014 to 2021. Anonymized SDO records were linked with emergency d

Barriers to Adoption of a Child-Abuse Clinical Decision Support System in Emergency Departments.

INTRODUCTION: Child abuse is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children. The rate of missed child abuse in general emergency departments (ED), where 85% of children are evaluated, is higher than in pediatric EDs. We sought to evaluate the impact of an electronic health record (EHR)-embedded child-abuse clinical decision support system (CA-CDSS) in the identification and evaluation of child maltreatment in a network of EDs three years after implementation. METHODS: We anonymously surveyed all 196 ED attending physicians and advanced practice practitioners (APP) in the University of

Adherence to a lifestyle monitoring system in patients with heart disease: protocol for the care-on prospective observational trial.

BACKGROUND: Lifestyle factors such as physical fitness, dietary habits, mental stress, and sleep quality, are strong predictors of the occurrence, clinical course, and overall treatment outcomes of common cardiovascular diseases. However, these lifestyle factors are rarely monitored, nor used in daily clinical practice and personalized cardiac care. Moreover, non-adherence to long-term self-reporting of these lifestyle factors is common. In the present study, we evaluate adherence to a continuous unobtrusive and patient-friendly lifestyle monitoring system using evidence-based assessment tools

IncuSense: IoT-Enabled Wireless Long-Term Multiparametric Cell Culture Incubator Monitoring System.

Cell-culture incubators are indispensable for in vitro research and new approach methods (NAMs), yet they remain vulnerable to undetected environmental fluctuations that degrade experimental reproducibility and compromise biological sample integrity. Existing monitoring solutions partially mitigate this risk but are frequently encumbered by wired infrastructure, external signal-transmitter assemblies, or a large form factor that hinder integration with diverse workflows. This study presents IncuSense, a miniaturized, battery-powered, wireless environmental monitoring platform capable of sensin

Machine Learning-Based Prediction Model for Multidrug-Resistant Organisms Infections: Performance Evaluation and Interpretability Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) infections pose a significant global health threat, particularly in intensive care units (ICUs), where delayed identification exacerbates clinical outcomes. Although machine learning (ML) holds promise for infection prediction, the opaque nature of complex algorithms impedes clinical adoption. This study evaluated an interpretable machine learning model incorporating SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) to predict MDRO infections in ICU patients. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 888 ICU patients (2020-2022) from a tertiary

A strategic framework for pathology faculty onboarding.

Effective oversight of talent acquisition, integration, management, and retention in an academic pathology department is critical to sustaining its tripartite mission of clinical service, research, and education. Despite substantial focus on these areas, the crucial initial transition and onboarding period for new faculty is often treated as an afterthought. Substantial evidence shows that well-structured onboarding programs boost productivity, satisfaction, and retention. Yet, a 2024 Association for Advancing Physician and Provider Recruitment report found that just over half of physicians an

Digital Surveillance After Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Guides Therapeutic Interventions to Reduce Non-Relapse Mortality.

INTRODUCTION: Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) offers curative potential for many hematological malignancies; however, outcomes may be adversely affected by infections and transplant-associated complications, contributing to non-relapse mortality (NRM). Innovative digital approaches for outpatient surveillance may support earlier detection of complications and thereby help reduce NRM. CASE PRESENTATION: We report on a 73 year-old Caucasian patient who underwent allogeneic HSCT for acute myeloid leukemia in complete remission following non-myeloablative conditioning. T

Disproportionality Analysis of Fluoroquinolone-Associated Peripheral Neuropathy in the FAERS Database (2007-2024).

Fluoroquinolones (FQs) are among the most frequently prescribed antibiotic classes worldwide. Despite their therapeutic versatility in treating bacterial infections, regulatory authorities recognized risks of persistent and potentially irreversible adverse effects, particularly peripheral neuropathy (PN). However, a comprehensive pharmacovigilance assessment of PN-related adverse events (AEs) across all six FDA-approved FQs remains limited. We therefore analyzed adverse event reports (AERs) associated with these six agents from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) Public Dashboard sp
