Compressive neuropathy of spinal nerve roots. A mechanical or biological problem?

Pathophysiologically, nerve root pain production is a complex issue. For many years, mechanical compression has been regarded as the sole cause for such pain. There are indications, however, that other factors, such as intraneural inflammation, may be of importance in this context. In this article, four cases are presented in which nerve root related pain gradually resolved without any proven change in the mechanical deformation of the involved nerve root. The data presented here suggest that mechanical compression, per se, may not always be the sole cause of radicular pain and dysfunction. Th

What is the recommended compression pressure for different clinical indications?

IntroductionCompression pressure is the key factor determining effectiveness in compression therapy for venous and lymphatic disorders. Despite its clinical importance, few studies report the actual applied pressure, and national standards for compression classes differ. This review aims to identify the optimal compression pressure at different stages of venous disease.MethodsA literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (January 1980-October 2025) using MeSH terms related to compression therapy and chronic venous disease, edema, thrombosis, post-thrombotic syndrome,

Effect of mechanical compression on the lumbar nerve root: localization and changes of intraradicular inflammatory cytokines, nitric oxide, and cyclooxygenase.

STUDY DESIGN: Investigation of intraradicular inflammation induced by mechanical compression. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanism of nerve root pain, this study used a lumbar nerve root compression model. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The manifestation of pain at sites of inflammation has a close relationship with the release of mediators from macrophages. However, the mediators involved in inflammation of nerve roots as a result of mechanical compression remain almost unknown. METHODS: In this study, the seventh lumbar nerve root of dogs was compressed with a clip for 3 weeks to observe

Vascular Compression of the Anterior Optic Pathway: A Rare Occurrence?

BACKGROUND: Vascular compression of the anterior optic pathway has been documented as an infrequent cause of visual impairments. Here we characterize such vascular compression using magnetic resonance imaging. METHODS: A total of 183 patients without pathologies affecting the optic pathways underwent T2-weighted or constructive interference steady-state sequence magnetic resonance imaging. Imaging data from coronal sections were analyzed. RESULTS: A vascular compression of the anterior optic pathway was identified in 20 patients (11%). They comprised 13 men and 7 women with a mean age of 60.

Behavioral estimates of basilar-membrane compression: additivity of forward masking in noise-masked normal-hearing listeners.

Cochlear hearing loss is often associated with a loss of basilar-membrane (BM) compression, which in turn may contribute to degraded processing of suprathreshold stimuli. Behavioral estimates of compression may therefore be useful as long as they are valid over a wide range of levels and frequencies. Additivity of forward masking (AFM) may provide such a measure, but research to date lacks normative data from normal-hearing (NH) listeners at high sound levels, which is necessary to evaluate data from hearing-impaired (HI) listeners. The present study measured AFM in six NH listeners for signal

An accurate method for real-time chest compression detection from the impedance signal.

OBJECTIVE: Real-time feedback improves CPR performance. Chest compression data may be obtained from an accelerometer/force sensor, but the impedance signal would serve as a less costly, universally available alternative. The objective is to assess the performance of a method which detects the presence/absence of chest compressions and derives CPR quality metrics from the impedance signal in real-time at 1s intervals without any latency period. METHODS: Defibrillator recordings from cardiac arrest cases were divided into derivation (N=119) and validation (N=105) datasets. With the force signal

Is the root entry/exit zone important in microvascular compression syndromes?

OBJECTIVE: Microvascular compression syndromes such as trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm, and disabling positional vertigo involve an artery or vein compressing a cranial nerve. A cranial nerve is composed of a central nervous system (CNS) segment and a peripheral nervous system (PNS) segment separated by the root entry/exit zone (REZ). Although vascular compression can occur at any point along the cranial nerve, it has been generally assumed that only vascular contact at the REZ of the affected cranial nerve can cause symptoms. On the basis of personal surgical experience, we propose tha

Analysis of the independent risk factors of neurologic deficit after thoracolumbar burst fracture.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study is to identify the independent risk factors of neurologic deficit after thoracolumbar burst fracture. Traumatic fractures of the thoracolumbar spine are the most common type of spinal column fractures. Many studies have attempted to determine whether neurologic deficit in such fractures is related to spinal canal stenosis or other parameters observed on axial computed tomography. However, this relationship remains controversial. METHODS: A review of the clinical data and axial computed tomography (CT) for 105 patients was performed. Neurologic deficit w

Manual lymphatic drainage for lymphedema following breast cancer treatment.

BACKGROUND: More than one in five patients who undergo treatment for breast cancer will develop breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL). BCRL can occur as a result of breast cancer surgery and/or radiation therapy. BCRL can negatively impact comfort, function, and quality of life (QoL). Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), a type of hands-on therapy, is frequently used for BCRL and often as part of complex decongestive therapy (CDT). CDT is a fourfold conservative treatment which includes MLD, compression therapy (consisting of compression bandages, compression sleeves, or other types of compressi

[Compression care for venous leg ulcers: Assessment of medical practices in 100 patients].

INTRODUCTION: The etiologic treatment of venous ulcers is based on compression therapy in compliance with the new guidelines promulgated by the French National Authority for Health (HAS) in 2010. Prescriptions often originate from a request by the nurse delivering care in the patient's home. A recent French study demonstrated the positive impact of compression therapy on venous ulcer healing. The objective of this study was to evaluate medical practices in order to target corrective actions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a single-center prospective observational study, using a standardi

A reduced multicomponent bandage compression system in the management of venous leg ulcers: a clinical evaluation.

OBJECTIVE: Lower limb assessment, patient adherence to treatment and timely initiation of compression therapy are major issues for most healthcare services managing patients with leg ulcers (LUs). Various guidelines recommend that if a patient has a LU and no 'red flag' symptoms, then 'mild' or 'reduced' compression therapy (20mmHg) is better than no compression while they await an ankle-brachial pressure index (ABPI), or if patients with a venous leg ulcer (VLU) cannot tolerate prescribed high compression therapy (40mmHg). The aim of this clinical study was to document the performance of a mu

Coded aperture temporal compressive digital holographic microscopy.

We report a coded aperture temporal compressive digital holographic microscopy (CATCHY) system to capture high-speed high-resolution samples by integrating snapshot compressive imaging (SCI) into digital holographic microscopy. Specifically, a two-dimensional (2D) detector samples a 4D (x, y, z, t) spatiotemporal data in a compressive manner, and after this, an efficient deep learning-based video SCI reconstruction algorithm is employed to reconstruct the desired 4D data cube. Up to ten high-resolution microscopic images are reconstructed from a snapshot measurement captured by our CATCHY syst
