LGTM: Gaussian process modulated neural topic modeling for longitudinal microbiome.

Longitudinal microbiome data are key to understanding the dynamics of microbial communities and their relationships with the host and environment. However, analysis of such data is challenging due to high dimensionality, compositionality, irregular sampling and temporal dependencies on external covariates. Existing analytical approaches typically address only subsets of these challenges, limiting their ability to yield biologically interpretable insights. We introduce LGTM, a probabilistic modeling framework that combines flexible non-linear longitudinal modeling with interpretable topic-based

Forging Online Community Among People in Recovery From Substance Use: Natural Language Processing and Deep-Learning Analysis of The Phoenix App User-Generated Data.

BACKGROUND: Mobile apps are powerful tools for promoting and sustaining healthy behaviors, including supporting diverse recovery pathways from substance use, including alcohol use disorder. Indeed, prior research strongly supports the notion that social connection through mobile platforms, supplemented by an in-person interaction, is vital in helping individuals strengthen their recovery and improve overall well-being and mental health. However, research into the digital footprints of mobile app users, as a strategy to assess app usage experiences in a recovery context, is lacking. OBJECTIVE:

The cost of ensembling: Is it always worth combining global retail forecasting models?

Given the continuous increase in dataset sizes and the complexity of forecasting models, the trade-off between forecast accuracy and computational cost is emerging as an extremely relevant topic, especially in the context of ensemble learning for time series forecasting. To assess it, we evaluated ten base models and eight ensemble configurations across two large-scale retail datasets, considering both point and probabilistic accuracy under varying retraining frequencies. We showed that ensembles consistently improve forecasting performance, particularly in probabilistic settings. However, the

2D-3D deformable image registration of histology slide and micro-CT with DISA-based initialization.

Recent developments in the registration of histology and micro-computed tomography (µCT) have broadened the perspective of pathological applications such as virtual histology based on µCT. This topic remains challenging because of the low image quality of soft tissue CT. Additionally, soft tissue samples usually deform during the histology slide preparation, making it difficult to correlate the structures between the histology slide and µCT. In this work, we propose a novel 2D-3D multi-modal deformable image registration method. The method utilizes an initial global 2D-3D registration using an

Deep Learning Applications in Computed Tomography Images for Pulmonary Nodule Detection and Diagnosis: A Review.

Lung cancer has one of the highest mortality rates of all cancers and poses a severe threat to people's health. Therefore, diagnosing lung nodules at an early stage is crucial to improving patient survival rates. Numerous computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have been developed to detect and classify such nodules in their early stages. Currently, CAD systems for pulmonary nodules comprise data acquisition, pre-processing, lung segmentation, nodule detection, false-positive reduction, segmentation, and classification. A number of review articles have considered various components of such syst

Digital App for Speech and Health Monitoring Study (DASH): protocol for a prospective longitudinal case-control observational study for developing speech datasets in neurodegenerative disorders and dementia.

INTRODUCTION: Neurodegenerative disorders (NDDs) represent an unprecedented public health burden. These disorders are clinically heterogeneous and therapeutically challenging, but advances in discovery science and trial methodology offer hope for translation to new treatments. Against this background, there is an urgent unmet need for biomarkers to aid with early and accurate diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring throughout the care pathway and in clinical trials.Investigations routinely used in clinical care and trials are often invasive, expensive, time-consuming, subjective and ordinal. Correlation Between Violence and Antipsychotic Dosage in Schizophrenia: A Secondary Analysis of The Clinical Antipsychotic Trials for Intervention Effectiveness (CATIE) Dataset.

INTRODUCTION: Violent behavior is more common in individuals with schizophrenia, compared to the general population. Studies suggest higher psychotic symptoms are predictive of greater violent behavior. On the other hand, violent behaviors are reduced with antipsychotic treatment. However, the relationship between antipsychotic dosage and violence has not been studied to date. Thus, we aimed to determine if there exists an association between antipsychotic dosage and violence scores and whether the maximum violence would be predictive of the final antipsychotic dosage. We hypothesized that the

Comprehensive review of literature on Parkinson's disease diagnosis.

PD is one of the neurodegenerative illnesses affects 1-2 individuals per 1000 people over the age of 60 and has a 1 % prevalence rate. It affects both the non-motor and motor aspects of movement, including initiation, execution, and planning. Prior to behavioral and cognitive abnormalities like dementia, movement-related symptoms including stiffness, tremor, and initiation issues may be observed. Patients with PD have substantial reductions in social interactions, quality of life (QoL), and familial ties, as well as significant financial burdens on both the individual and societal levels. The

SAILOR: perceptual anchoring for robotic cognitive architectures.

Symbolic anchoring is an important topic in robotics, as it enables robots to obtain symbolic knowledge from the perceptual information acquired through their sensors and maintain the link between that knowledge and the sensory data. In cognitive-based robots, this process of transforming sub-symbolic data generated by sensors to obtain and maintain symbolic knowledge is still an open problem. To address this issue, this paper presents SAILOR, a framework for symbolic anchoring integrated into ROS 2. SAILOR aims to maintain the link between symbolic data and perceptual data in real robots over

A comparative study of AJCC and the modified staging system in pT2/pT3 penile squamous cell carcinoma - a validation on an external data set.

AIMS: The recent changes in the American Joint Commission on Cancer, 8th edition (AJCC-8E) pT2 and pT3 tumour definitions for penile cancer need robust validation studies. A recent study redefined and modified the pT2 and pT3 stages incorporating the histopathological variables (tumour grade, lymphovascular invasion, perineural invasion) similar to that used in the current AJCC-8E pT1 stage tumour subclassification. In this study, we validate and compare this proposed staging with the AJCC staging systems on an external data set. METHODS AND RESULTS: The data set from a previously published s

Fully automated segmentation of cartilage from the MR images of knee using a multi-atlas and local structural analysis method.

PURPOSE: To develop a fully automated method to segment cartilage from the magnetic resonance (MR) images of knee and to evaluate the performance of the method on a public, open dataset. METHODS: The segmentation scheme consisted of three procedures: multiple-atlas building, applying a locally weighted vote (LWV), and region adjustment. In the atlas building procedure, all training cases were registered to a target image by a nonrigid registration scheme and the best matched atlases selected. A LWV algorithm was applied to merge the information from these atlases and generate the initial segm

A Biomechanical Dataset of 1,798 Healthy and Injured Subjects During Treadmill Walking and Running.

Quantitative biomechanical gait analysis is an important clinical and research tool for injury and disease diagnosis and treatment. However, one major criticism is that gait analysis laboratories largely operate in isolation and there is a lack of benchmark datasets, which can be used to advance research and statistical methodologies. To address this, we present an open biomechanics dataset of n = 1798 healthy and injured, young and older adults during treadmill walking and/or running at a range of gait speeds. The full dataset is available on Figshare+ and data files are contained within a se

Sentiment Dynamics Among Informal Caregivers in Web-Based Alzheimer Communities: Systematic Analysis of Emotional Support and Interaction Patterns.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRD) are a growing global health challenge. ADRD place significant physical, emotional, and financial burdens on informal caregivers and negatively affects their well-being. Web-based social media platforms have emerged as valuable sources of peer support for these caregivers. However, there has been limited investigation into how web-based peer support might influence their mental well-being. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the dynamics of sentiment scores, a major indicator of mental well-being, among informal ADRD caregivers, spec

Applications of Machine Learning in Human Microbiome Studies: A Review on Feature Selection, Biomarker Identification, Disease Prediction and Treatment.

The number of microbiome-related studies has notably increased the availability of data on human microbiome composition and function. These studies provide the essential material to deeply explore host-microbiome associations and their relation to the development and progression of various complex diseases. Improved data-analytical tools are needed to exploit all information from these biological datasets, taking into account the peculiarities of microbiome data, i.e., compositional, heterogeneous and sparse nature of these datasets. The possibility of predicting host-phenotypes based on taxon

A pilot study for investigating the feasibility of supervised machine learning approaches for the classification of pedestrians struck by vehicles.

This research focuses on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) methodologies to the problem of classifying vehicles involved in lethal pedestrian collisions. Specifically, the vehicle type is predicted on the basis of traumatic injury suffered by casualties, exploiting machine learning algorithms. In the present study, AI-assisted diagnosis was shown to have correct prediction about 70% of the time. In pedestrians struck by trucks, more severe injuries were appreciated in the facial skeleton, lungs, major airways, liver, and spleen as well as in the sternum/clavicle/rib complex, wher

Comparing an Indian dataset with BioAlder using Demirjian's staging of the third molar.

This study evaluated third molar development in a northern Indian dataset from Uttar Pradesh (UP) using Demirjian staging and compared the results with another northern Indian dataset from Rajasthan (RS) and with the BioAlder model. The inter-rater reliability in the UP dataset was assessed using linear weighted Cohen's kappa and showed strong agreement. Development patterns were compared conditional on age to avoid age-mimicry bias: UP versus RS was assessed using age-stratified Fisher's exact tests and an overall ordinal-regression likelihood ratio test, and UP versus BioAlder was assessed u
