Tick-Borne Encephalitis Virus in Ticks and Roe Deer, the Netherlands.

We report the presence of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) in the Netherlands. Serologic screening of roe deer found TBEV-neutralizing antibodies with a seroprevalence of 2%, and TBEV RNA was detected in 2 ticks from the same location. Enhanced surveillance and awareness among medical professionals has led to the identification of autochthonous cases.

The first detection of Cryptosporidium deer-like genotype in cattle in Japan.

The general perception is that cattle are major reservoirs for Cryptosporidium parvum infections in humans and that C. parvum is a major cause of diarrhea and production loss in cattle. Adult cattle may play an important role as cryptic carrier of the infection. Cryptosporidium spp. in asymptomatic adult dairy cattle from some farms around Osaki area, Miyagi prefecture, Japan, was examined on a field visit during August, 2007, by polymerase chain reaction techniques for detection, genotyping, and subtyping. Cryptosporidium oocysts were detected in the feces of five out of 50 animals. Of the fi

Effects of acepromazine on capture stress in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus).

The aim of this study was to evaluate effect of a short-acting neuroleptic (acepromazine) on capture stress response in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). Sixteen roe deer were captured by drive-nets in the winters of 1998, 1999, and 2001. Roe deer were divided into two groups: animals in the treatment group received an intramuscular injection of acepromazine (0.093 mg/kg +/- 0.003 SEM; n = 8) while animals in the control group (n = 8) did not receive tranquilizer. Heart rate and body temperature, as well as hematologic and biochemical indicators of stress, were used to evaluate effect of the neu

Roe deer as sentinels for endemicity of tick-borne encephalitis virus.

The suitability of serological surveys of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) in determining the spread of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) was tested in a south German area with a low risk of TBEV infection to humans. Sera obtained from 192 hunted roe were screened by an haemagglutination-inhibition test (HAI) and in an ELISA developed in our laboratory. Those found positive were tested in a neutralization test (NT). Fifty (26.0%) sera reacted positive by ELISA and 43 (86.0%) of these were confirmed by HAI or NT. Forty-seven (24.5%) samples were positive by HAI, 44 (93.6%) of which were also p

An outbreak of meningo-encephalitis in fallow deer caused by Listeria monocytogenes.

An outbreak of listeric meningo-encephalitis occurred in a population of 1800 fallow deer (Dama dama) in a park during the winter and early spring of 1985 to 1986. Listeriosis was diagnosed in 41 of 42 fallow deer that showed the typical central nervous system signs of circling disease or were found dead. The diagnosis was verified by bacteriological examination of the brains of 35 animals. In five of the seven remaining cases listeriosis was diagnosed by histological examination, and in one animal by clinical signs alone. Listeria monocytogenes was isolated in three of 23 soil samples taken f

Prevalence and distribution of Setaria yehi in southeastern white-tailed deer.

Filarial worms, Setaria yehi, were found in 286 of 1,045 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) from 13 of 16 southeastern states. Infections were widespread in the piedmont and coastal plain physiographic provinces, but rarely occurred in deer of the mountains or in southern Florida. Infections were significantly more prevalent among fawn and yearling deer. Infections with S yehi largely accounted for a mild fibrinous peritonitis commonly observed among southeastern deer.

The occurrence of antibody to Babesia and to the virus of louping-ill in deer in Scotland.

Sera of wild red deer from 16 localities in Scotland were tested by the indirect fluorescent antibody technique for antibody to Babesia and by the haemagglutination inhibition test for antibody to the virus of louping-ill. Babesial antibody was detected in sera from all localities in proportions ranging from 22 to 100 per cent. Antibody to louping-ill virus could not be demonstrated in sera from five of the localities and in the other 11 was found less frequently than was antibody to Babesia. Sera from male and female deer were positive for louping-ill in almost equal proportions whereas the i

DETECTION OF DEER ATADENOVIRUS A DNA IN DAM AND OFFSPRING PAIRS OF ROCKY MOUNTAIN MULE DEER (ODOCOILEUS HEMIONUS HEMIONUS) AND ROCKY MOUNTAIN ELK (CERVUS CANADENSIS NELSONI).

Adenovirus hemorrhagic disease affects primarily mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus canadensis nelsoni), and moose (Alces alces) in their first year of life. The method by which the causative virus, Deer atadenovirus A, is maintained in the environment and transmitted to neonates is unknown. In this study, we investigated the potential transmission of the virus from dam to offspring in Rocky Mountain mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus) and elk in western Wyoming, US. We sampled dams before parturition during placement of

Prevalence of the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, in deer ticks (Ixodes dammini) collected from white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Saint Croix State Park, Minnesota.

During a special two-day hunt (11, 12 November 1989) in Saint Croix State Park, Minnesota (USA), one side of the neck for each of 146 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) was examined for ticks. Of the 5,442 ticks collected, 90% (4,893) were the winter tick, Dermacentor albipictus, and 10% (549) were the deer tick, Ixodes dammini, the primary vector of the causative agent of Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi. Adult males had the greatest frequency of infestation of either D. albipictus (100%) or I. dammini (88%) and had on average more ticks, compared to other deer. Based on an examinat

Deer tick virus genotypes are perpetuated by different modes of transmission.

Deer tick virus (DTV), or lineage II Powassan virus, is an emergent tick-borne encephalitis virus in North America. Survivors frequently sustain neurologic sequelae. Nationally reported cases have been increasing. DTV is thought to be maintained in nature by multiple modes including horizontal transmission (from viremic host to tick), cofeeding transmission (between ticks feeding nearby) and by transovarial transmission (female to progeny). Analysis of the relative importance of each mode has been hindered by low enzootic transmission. In 2021, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts experienced an e

Prevalence and characterization of Cryptosporidium in sika deer from Northern China.

Cryptosporidium spp. are important zoonotic parasites that can cause moderate to severe diarrhea in humans and animals. However, the epidemiological data of Cryptosporidium in sika deer in China need to be updated. In this study, a total of 466 fecal samples were collected from sika deer in Shandong, Jilin, Liaoning, and Heilongjiang provinces. Nested PCR was used to amplify the SSU rRNA gene to detect Cryptosporidium spp. The results showed that the overall infection rate of Cryptosporidium spp. was 14.81%, with no significant differences among regions (p = 0.05). The highest infection rate w

Possibility of Vertical Transmission of Sarcocystis spp. in Sika Deer in Japan.

In recent years, the wild deer population in Japan has grown exponentially, causing severe feeding damage to the agricultural and forestry industries. Therefore, the game meat industry is being promoted for effective utilization of hunted animals. Wild animals are not hygienically controlled and can serve as reservoirs for pathogenic microorganisms. However, epidemiological information on wild animals in Japan remains insufficient. Recently, food poisoning-like cases have occurred because of raw venison infection with Sarcocystis spp. As the prevalence of Sarcocystis spp. in sika deer is very

Protective Effect of Deer Heart Peptide on Cardiac Injury in Mice.

Peptides are widely used as natural bio-small molecules because of their various pharmacological activities such as enhancing immunity, promoting wound healing, and improving inflammation. Alcoholic heart injury has become one of the major health problems worldwide, and alcohol consumption is now the main cause of alcoholic cardiomyopathy. In this study, deer heart peptides were extracted from deer hearts by enzymatic digestion and the antioxidant activity of deer heart peptides extracted at different times was evaluated by three in vitro antioxidant methods, and the active peptide with the be

Molecular Detection and Genotyping of Theileria spp. in Deer (Cervidae) in Korea.

Major clinical symptoms of Theileria infection include fever, anemia, anorexia, jaundice, and decreased milk production. Although several studies have been conducted on tick-borne pathogens, including Theileria in Korea, only a few have focused on Theileria infection in deer, including the Korean water deer. Blood samples from 160 deer were collected and subjected to DNA extraction and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Next, PCR-positive samples were sequenced and analyzed by constructing a phylogenetic tree. The results showed that the overall infection rate of Theileria was 8.1% (13/160). Inf

Prevalence and predictors of vector-borne pathogens in Dutch roe deer.

BACKGROUND: The main objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of nine vector-borne pathogens or pathogen genera in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) in the Netherlands, and to identify which host variables predict vector-borne pathogen presence in roe deer. The host variables examined were the four host factors 'age category', 'sex', 'nutritional condition' and 'health status', as well as 'roe deer density'. METHODS: From December 2009 to September 2010, blood samples of 461 roe deer were collected and analysed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the presence of genetic materia

Calcinosis in a roe deer fawn (Capreolus capreolus) in northern Germany.

BACKGROUND: Calcinosis has been reported for a broad range of different animals. Causes for calcinosis include metabolic disorders due to kidney failure, intoxication with calcinogenic plants, or iatrogenic overdose of vitamin D. Especially young animals seem to be very susceptible to developing calcinosis. Currently, however, there is a lack of information on calcinosis in wildlife. CASE PRESENTATION: The following case report describes a roe deer fawn admitted to a clinic due to general weakness and myiasis. Plasma levels for creatinine, urea and phosphate were highly elevated, whereas the
