Differential association of default mode network connectivity and rumination in healthy individuals and remitted MDD patients.

Rumination is associated with increased default-mode network (DMN) activity and functional connectivity (FC) in depressed and healthy individuals. In this study, we sought to examine the relationship between self-reported rumination and resting-state FC in the DMN and cognitive control networks in 25 remitted depressed patients and 25 matched healthy controls using independent component and seed-based analyses. We also explored potential group differences in the global pattern of resting-state FC. Healthy subjects with increased levels of rumination exhibited increased anterior DMN connectivit

Decreased connectivity of the default mode network in pathological gambling: a resting state functional MRI study.

The default mode network (DMN) represents neuronal activity that is intrinsically generated during a resting state. The present study used resting-state fMRI to investigate whether functional connectivity is altered in pathological gambling (PG). Fifteen drug-naive male patients with PG and 15 age-matched male control subjects participated in the present study. The pathological gambling modification of the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (PG-YBOCS), the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Beck Anxiety Inventory were used to determine symptom severity in all participants. Participants were

Working memory in preterm-born adults: load-dependent compensatory activity of the posterior default mode network.

Premature birth is associated with an increased risk of cognitive performance deficits that are dependent on working memory (WM) load in childhood. Less clear is whether preterm-born adults show similar WM impairments, or develop compensatory brain mechanisms that help to overcome prematurity-related functional deficits, for example, by a workload-dependent over-recruitment of WM-typical areas, and/or engagement of alternative brain networks. In this functional magnetic resonance imaging study, 73 adults born very preterm and/or with very low birth weight (VP/VLBW) and 73 term-born controls (C

Default-mode network changes in Huntington's disease: an integrated MRI study of functional connectivity and morphometry.

Previous MRI studies of functional connectivity in pre-symptomatic mutation carriers of Huntington's disease (HD) have shown dysfunction of the Default-Mode Network (DMN). No data however are currently available on the DMN alterations in the symptomatic stages of the disease, which are characterized by cortical atrophy involving several DMN nodes. We assessed DMN integrity and its possible correlations with motor and cognitive symptoms in 26 symptomatic HD patients as compared to 22 normal volunteers, by analyzing resting state functional MRI data, using the Precuneal Cortex/Posterior Cingulat

The parahippocampal gyrus links the default-mode cortical network with the medial temporal lobe memory system.

The default-mode network (DMN) is a distributed functional-anatomic network implicated in supporting memory. Current resting-state functional connectivity studies in humans remain divided on the exact involvement of medial temporal lobe (MTL) in this network at rest. Notably, it is unclear to what extent the MTL regions involved in successful memory encoding are connected to the cortical nodes of the DMN during resting state. Our findings using functional connectivity MRI analyses of resting-state data indicate that the parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) is the primary hub of the DMN in the MTL durin

Effects of exercise on resting-state default mode and salience network activity in overweight/obese adults.

Despite the common use of exercise as a weight-loss strategy, little is known about its neuronal effects, and how these may be related to cognitive changes that impact food intake. The current study assessed the effects of a 6-month exercise intervention on intrinsic activity in the default mode network (DMN), a functionally connected network of brain regions including posterior cingulate cortex, cuneus/precuneus, medial prefrontal cortex, medial temporal lobe, and inferior parietal cortices, and salience network, which includes the anterior cingulate cortex and insula. Disrupted small-world architecture and altered default mode network topology of brain functional network in college students with subclinical depression.

BACKGROUND: Subclinical depression (ScD), serving as a significant precursor to depression, is a prevalent condition in college students and imposes a substantial health service burden. However, the brain network topology of ScD remains poorly understood, impeding our comprehension of the neuropathology underlying ScD. METHODS: Functional networks of individuals with ScD (n = 26) and healthy controls (HCs) (n = 33) were constructed based on functional magnetic resonance imaging data. These networks were then optimized using a small-worldness and modular similarity-based network thresholding m

Alterations in neural circuit dynamics between the limbic network and prefrontal/default mode network in patients with generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Widespread functional alterations have been implicated in patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). However, most studies have primarily focused on static brain network features in patients with GAD. The current research focused on exploring the dynamics within functional brain networks among individuals diagnosed with GAD. METHODS: Seventy-five participants were divided into patients with GAD and healthy controls (HCs), and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected. The severity of symptoms was measured using the Hamilton Anxiety Scale and th

Altered Salience-Default Mode Network Dynamics in Subclinical Depression: A Preclustering-Based Co-Activation Pattern Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Neuroimaging studies frequently report aberrant spontaneous brain activity and functional connectivity within core functional networks, including the default mode network (DMN), frontoparietal network (FPN), and salience network (SN) in subclinical depression (SD). However, the dynamic coordination among these networks remains poorly understood, impeding comprehensive elucidation of the underlying neuropathology of SD. METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were collected from subjects with SD (n = 26) and healthy controls (HCs, n = 33). A preclus

Functional connectivity of the default mode network subsystems alterations in suicide attempters with major depressive disorder.

Default mode network (DMN) abnormalities are common in patients with major depressive disorder and suicide attempts (MDD-SA). We aimed to investigate the abnormal functional connectivity (FC) patterns of DMN in MDD-SA. Seventeen DMN components were extracted from 55 MDD-SA, 94 patients with MDD but without suicide attempts (MDD-NoSA), and 71 healthy controls (HC). Compared with HC and MDD-NoSA, patients with MDD-SA revealed reduced FC between the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dMPFC) seed and middle frontal gyrus (MFG). Patients with MDD-SA also showed specific increased FC between ventral med

Altered structural node of default mode network mediated general cognitive ability in young adults with obesity.

BACKGROUND: Obesity, characterized by excessive adiposity, is associated with brain structural abnormalities. Nevertheless, the relationships between altered structural nodes of default mode network (DMN), body mass index (BMI), general cognitive ability remained unclear in young adults. METHODS: In this study, we divided a large sample of young adults into three BMI-based groups. We then conducted one-way analyses of variance and post-hoc tests with Bonferroni corrections to investigate abnormal structural brain regions associated with obesity. Furthermore, mediation effects models were buil

Reduced resting-state functional connectivity of default mode network subsystems in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Neuroimaging studies have reported extensive resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) abnormalities in the default mode network (DMN) in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but findings are inconsistent. DMN can be divided into three subsystems: core, dorsal medial prefrontal cortex (dMPFC), and medial temporal lobe (MTL). This study aimed to explore abnormalities in rsFC strength within and between DMN subsystems in OCD patients, and their relationship with clinical symptoms. METHODS: This study recruited 39 OCD patients and 45 healthy controls (HCs). OCD sympt

Frontal White Matter Hyperintensities Effect on Default Mode Network Connectivity in Acute Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

The functional connectivity of the brain depends not only on the structural integrity of the cortex but also on the white matter pathways between cortical areas. White matter hyperintensities (WMH), caused by chronic hypoperfusion in the white matter, play a role in the outcome of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and other neurodegenerative disorders. Herein, we investigate how the location and volume of WMH affect the default-mode network (DMN) connectivity in acute mild TBI (mTBI) patients. Forty-six patients with acute mTBI and 46 matched healthy controls were enrolled in the study. All partici

Electrophysiological Correlates of Rodent Default-Mode Network Suppression Revealed by Large-Scale Local Field Potential Recordings.

UNLABELLED: The default-mode network (DMN) in humans consists of a set of brain regions that, as measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), show both intrinsic correlations with each other and suppression during externally oriented tasks. Resting-state fMRI studies have previously identified similar patterns of intrinsic correlations in overlapping brain regions in rodents (A29C/posterior cingulate cortex, parietal cortex, and medial temporal lobe structures). However, due to challenges with performing rodent behavior in an MRI machine, it is still unclear whether activity in

The effect of white matter signal abnormalities on default mode network connectivity in mild cognitive impairment.

Regions within the default mode network (DMN) are particularly vulnerable to Alzheimer's disease pathology and mechanisms of DMN disruption in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are still unclear. White matter lesions are presumed to be mechanistically linked to vascular dysfunction whereas cortical atrophy may be related to neurodegeneration. We examined associations between DMN seed-based connectivity, white matter lesion load, and cortical atrophy in MCI and cognitively healthy controls. MCI showed decreased functional connectivity (FC) between the precuneus-seed and bilateral lateral temporal
