Map-based spatial perspective taking reveals frontal late negativity loss and posterior delta gain in mild cognitive impairment.

Spatial disorientation represents a clinically meaningful vulnerability during aging and is an early manifestation along the Alzheimer's disease continuum. Understanding how aging-related central nervous system (CNS) changes affect the neural computations required for spatial perspective taking (SPT) is essential for characterizing early neurodegenerative processes. In this study, older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and subjective cognitive decline (SCD) completed a simplified map-based SPT paradigm while electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded. Although behavioral accuracy was

A multiscale symbolic approach to decoding delta and ripple oscillation bands as biomarkers for epileptiform discharges.

We use a multiscale symbolic approach to study the complex dynamics of temporal lobe refractory epilepsy employing high-resolution intracranial electroencephalogram (iEEG). We consider the basal and preictal phases and meticulously analyze the dynamics across frequency bands, focusing on high-frequency oscillations up to 240 Hz. Our results reveal significant periodicities and critical time scales within neural dynamics across frequency bands. By bandpass filtering neural signals into delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma, and ripple high-frequency bands (HFO), each associated with specific neural

Prognostic Value of Continuous Electroencephalogram Delta Power in Neonates With Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy.

The objective was to examine the discriminatory ability of electroencephalogram (EEG) delta power in neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) with well-defined outcomes. Prolonged continuous EEG recordings from term neonates with HIE during therapeutic hypothermia enrolled in a prospective observational study were examined. Adverse outcome was defined as death or severe brain injury by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); favorable outcome was defined as normal or mild injury by MRI. Neonates were stratified by Sarnat grade of encephalopathy at admission. EEG was partitioned into 10-mi

Beat-to-beat behavior of QT interval during conducted supraventricular rhythm in the normal heart.

To assess beat-to-beat behavior of QT interval under different conditions, high resolution recordings and computerized beat-to-beat analysis of the electrocardiogram were performed at rest, during recovery after short exercise, and during atrial pacing. Beat-to-beat variations of QT interval during sinus rhythm at rest and after short exercise were measured in ten healthy men. In an additional three patients with supraventricular tachycardia, beat-to-beat QT changes were studied after abrupt sustained acceleration and deceleration of heart rate by atrial pacing. Beat-to-beat changes in RR inte

Abnormal cortical sources of resting state electroencephalographic rhythms in single treatment-naïve HIV individuals: A statistical z-score index.

OBJECTIVE: This study tested a simple statistical procedure to recognize single treatment-naïve HIV individuals having abnormal cortical sources of resting state delta (<4 Hz) and alpha (8-13 Hz) electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythms with reference to a control group of sex-, age-, and education-matched healthy individuals. Compared to the HIV individuals with a statistically normal EEG marker, those with abnormal values were expected to show worse cognitive status. METHODS: Resting state eyes-closed EEG data were recorded in 82 treatment-naïve HIV (39.8 ys.±1.2 standard error mean, SE) and 5

Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome: illustrative case and brief review.

The Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome (WPWS) is a pre-excitation syndrome manifested on the 12-lead ECG by a short PR interval (less than .12 sec), a prolonged QRS interval (greater than .10 sec), and an initial slurring of the QRS complex called a delta wave. The anatomical etiology is the presence of accessory atrioventricular conduction fibers called the Kent bundle. Patients with the WPWS may present to the emergency department with a wide spectrum of symptoms, ranging from mild palpitations, to unstable tachydysrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. WPWS should be suspected in any patient prese

[Individual characteristics of the organization of the human endocrine system].

Individual features of the endocrine system were studied in 26 healthy men, divided into 2 groups, according to the characteristics of EEG, electrocutaneous thresholds and the time response (TR) upon sound signals of 40 to 120 decibels. The subjects of the 1st group were characterized by the high energy of EEG delta- and theta-rhythms, low energy of alpha-rhythm, low thresholds and TR40 : TR120 ratio. The patients of the 2nd group had the opposite parameters. In both groups the blood plasma and urine catecholamine content, ACTH, TTH, 11-hydroxycorticosteroids, cortisol, aldosterone, thyroxine,

Relationship between cortical electrical responsiveness and changes in regional cerebral oxygenation (rSO2) and return of spontaneous circulation in prolonged cardiac arrest: a multi-center observational study.

BACKGROUND: Ischemic/anoxic brain injury is often assumed to occur within minutes of severe cerebral ischemia. However, emerging evidence suggests brain tissue may be more resilient, with important implications for resuscitation. We hypothesized that during prolonged cardiac arrest, cortical electrical activity may be restorable if cerebral oxygenation thresholds are met and may be associated with return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). METHODS: This was an ancillary cohort analysis of a multicenter, prospective observational study. Consecutive adult patients with in-hospital cardiac arrest

Resting-state Quantitative EEG Spectral Patterns in Migraine During Ictal Phase Reveal Deviant Brain Oscillations: Potential Role of Density Spectral Array.

Background. Migraine headache may have a substantial bearing on the brain functions and rhythms. Electrophysiological methods can detect changes in brain oscillation. The present work examined the frequency band power through quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) and density spectral array (DSA) to elucidate the resting state neuronal oscillations in migraine. Methods. Clinical details were inquired, and EEG was recorded in migraineurs and healthy controls. The acquired data were analyzed to determine power spectral density values and obtain DSA graphs. The absolute and relative powers for

Cerebellar Theta Frequency Transcranial Pulsed Stimulation Increases Frontal Theta Oscillations in Patients with Schizophrenia.

Cognitive dysfunction is a pervasive and disabling aspect of schizophrenia without adequate treatments. A recognized correlate to cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia is attenuated frontal theta oscillations. Neuromodulation to normalize these frontal rhythms represents a potential novel therapeutic strategy. Here, we evaluate whether noninvasive neuromodulation of the cerebellum in patients with schizophrenia can enhance frontal theta oscillations, with the future goal of targeting the cerebellum as a possible therapy for cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia. We stimulated the midline cer

Split accessory pathway potentials in a patient with antidromic AVRT.

INTRODUCTION: Accessory pathway potential often indicates a highly effective ablation target in Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. METHODS: A 27-year-old female presenting with palpitation underwent an electrophysiology study, who had mild pre-excitation in surface ECG. RESULTS: An accessory pathway with weak anterograde conduction was found. During isoproterenol infusion, the delta wave became prominent, an antidromic AV reentrant tachycardia was then induced. When the pathway was mapped, widely split double pathway potentials were observed at the 12 o'clock site of the tricuspid annulus durin

Adenosine in treating cardiac arrhythmias.

1. Adenosine is an endogenous nucleoside which causes a brief blockade of the AV nodal conduction pathway following intravenous administration. 2. Such a brief AV block can be used therapeutically for reliable termination of AV nodal re-entry tachycardia and WPW re-entry tachycardia. It can also be used for demasking atrial activity in rapid suspected supraventricular tachycardia with a broad QRS complex or a Delta wave, not present during sinus rhythm with normal AV node conduction, indicating the presence of a hidden WPW syndrome. 3. Side effects after adenosine application are frequent, but

Assessment of P- to delta-wave interval and its relationship with accessory pathway properties in patients with pre-excitation.

BACKGROUND: The first clinical manifestation of the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome in previously asymptomatic individuals may be sudden cardiac death. The options for non-invasive risk stratification are limited in the current era beyond ambulatory rhythm monitoring and an exercise stress test. In our study, we sought to investigate whether there was a relationship between the shortest measured P- to delta-wave time interval (PDI) on the conduction properties of surface electrocardiogram and accessory pathways expressed as antegrade effective refractory period (APERP). METHODS: Demographic da

EEG measures for clinical research in major vascular cognitive impairment: recommendations by an expert panel.

Vascular contribution to cognitive impairment (VCI) and dementia is related to etiologies that may affect the neurophysiological mechanisms regulating brain arousal and generating electroencephalographic (EEG) activity. A multidisciplinary expert panel reviewed the clinical literature and reached consensus about the EEG measures consistently found as abnormal in VCI patients with dementia. As compared to cognitively unimpaired individuals, those VCI patients showed (1) smaller amplitude of resting state alpha (8-12 Hz) rhythms dominant in posterior regions; (2) widespread increases in amplitud

Cortical sources of resting state EEG rhythms are abnormal in dyslexic children.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have been inconclusive whether dominant resting state alpha rhythms differ in amplitude in dyslexic subjects when compared to control subjects, being these rhythms considered as a reflection of effective cortical neural synchronization and cognition. Here we used a validated EEG source estimation to test the hypothesis that resting state alpha rhythms are abnormal in dyslexic subjects and are related to reading deficits. METHODS: Eyes-closed resting state electroencephalographic (EEG) data were recorded in 26 dyslexics (12 males, mean age of 11 years ± 0.5 standard

Characterization of seizure-like events recorded in vivo in a mouse model of Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by mutations in the X-linked gene encoding methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MECP2). Spontaneous recurrent discharge episodes are displayed in Rett-related seizures as in other types of epilepsies. The aim of this paper is to investigate the seizure-like event (SLE) and inter-SLE states in a female MeCP2-deficient mouse model of Rett syndrome and compare them to those found in other spontaneous recurrent epilepsy models. The study was performed on a small population of female MeCP2-deficient mice using telemetric local field potential (LFP) rec

Surgical ablation of Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome in children and young adults.

From 1988 to 1991, nine patients with structural normal heart, aged 10 to 23 (median 13 years), Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome patients were operated at National Taiwan University Hospital. The diagnosis was established by surface electrocardiograms recorded during sinus rhythm and tachycardia, and by complete cardiac electrophysiologic studies. The location of accessory pathways (AP) were: 4 left lateral, 3 right lateral, 1 right posteroseptal and 1 right anteroseptal AV groove. In all 6 patients with manifest WPW syndrome, the location of AP could be correctly predicted by the surface EKG de

Circadian Rhythm Genes and Their Association with Sleep and Sleep Restriction.

Deprivation of sleep (DS) and its effects on circadian rhythm gene expression are not well understood despite their influence on various physiological and psychological processes. This study aimed to elucidate the changes in the expression of circadian rhythm genes following a night of sleep and DS. Their correlation with sleep architecture and physical activity was also examined. The study included 81 participants who underwent polysomnography (PSG) and DS with actigraphy. Blood samples were collected after PSG and DS. Expression levels of brain and muscle ARNT-like 1 (BMAL1), circadian locom

Prediction of antiepileptic drug treatment outcomes using machine learning.

OBJECTIVE: Antiepileptic drug (AED) treatments produce inconsistent outcomes, often necessitating patients to go through several drug trials until a successful treatment can be found. This study proposes the use of machine learning techniques to predict epilepsy treatment outcomes of commonly used AEDs. APPROACH: Machine learning algorithms were trained and evaluated using features obtained from intracranial electroencephalogram (iEEG) recordings of the epileptiform discharges observed in Mecp2-deficient mouse model of the Rett Syndrome.
