BACKGROUND & AIMS: Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a chronic liver disease characterized by hepatic lipid accumulation, inflammation, and progressive fibrosis. Acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) catalyzes the rate-limiting step of de novo lipogenesis and regulates fatty acid β-oxidation in hepatocytes. ACC inhibition reduces hepatic fat content and markers of liver injury in patients with NASH; however, the effect of ACC inhibition on liver fibrosis has not been reported.

This study investigates the phytochemical constituents and hepatoprotective properties of Onopordum cyrenaicum Maire & Weiller, a traditional medicinal herb. Chronic liver disease is closely linked to dietary intake factors, such as high consumption of simple carbohydrates including sucrose. In this study, the influence of sucrose on the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common primary liver malignancy, was explored. PURPOSE: To study the effect of Cleistocalyx nervosum extract (CE) on diethylnitrosamine (DEN) and phenobarbital (PB) induced oxidative stress in early stages of rat hepatocarcinogenesis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups, with Group 1 as a negative control and Group 2 was a positive control receiving DEN injections once a week and PB in drinking water for 6 weeks. We established a cell line (MHB-2) from a hepatoblastoma (HB) induced by diethylnitrosamine (DEN) and sodium phenobarbital (PB) in male B6C3F1 mice and examined the biological characteristics of MHB-2. MHB-2 cells grew as monolayers in culture and showed a spindle or polygonal shape.
