Prescription Opioid Use for Adolescents With Neurocognitive Disability Undergoing Surgery: A Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: Parents frequently report retaining unused opioid pills following their child's surgery due to fear of untreated postoperative pain. Assessment of pain in adolescents with neurocognitive disability is challenging. We hypothesized that parents of adolescents with neurocognitive disability may report less opioid use and higher opioid pill retention. METHODS: Adolescents (13-20 y) undergoing elective surgery (posterior spinal fusion, hip reconstruction, arthroscopy, tonsillectomy) were prospectively enrolled from a tertiary children's hospital from 2019 to 2020. Only adolescents pr

Increased Risk of Developing Depression in Disability after Stroke: A Korean Nationwide Study.

Stroke is a leading cause of mortality and a major cause of disability worldwide. A significant number of stroke survivors suffer from depression, impeding the activities of daily living and rehabilitation. Here, we examined the risk of depression among stroke survivors according to the severity of disabilities and compared its incidence with a matched control group. We included data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service of 207,678 stroke survivors. Cox proportional hazard models were used to calculate the risk of depression among stroke survivors. Stroke survivors had a greater ri

Updating Korean Disability Weights for Causes of Disease: Adopting an Add-on Study Method.

ObjectivesDisability weights require regular updates, as they are influenced by both diseases and societal perceptions. Consequently, it is necessary to develop an up-to-date list of the causes of diseases and establish a survey panel for estimating disability weights. Accordingly, this study was conducted to calculate, assess, modify, and validate disability weights suitable for Korea, accounting for its cultural and social characteristics.MethodsThe 380 causes of disease used in the survey were derived from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease Collaborative Network and from 2019 and 2020 Korean

A Register Study Suggesting Homotypic and Heterotypic Comorbidity Among Individuals With Learning Disabilities.

The present study examined whether learning disabilities (LD) in reading and/or math (i.e., reading disability [RD], math disability [MD], and RD+MD) co-occur with other diagnoses. The data comprised a clinical sample (n = 430) with LD identified in childhood and a sample of matched controls (n = 2,140). Their medical diagnoses (according to the International Classification of Diseases nosology) until adulthood (20-39 years) were analyzed. The co-occurrence of LD with neurodevelopmental disorders was considered a homotypic comorbidity, and co-occurrence with disorders or diseases from the othe

Women with disabilities' experiences of intimate partner violence: a qualitative study from Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a prevalent form of gender-based violence affecting one in three women globally. It is also a preventable cause of ill-health, disability, and death. Current research suggests that women with disabilities are at a significantly higher risk of experiencing violence throughout their lifetime. They are almost twice as likely to experience violence compared to men with disabilities or men and women without disabilities. Additionally, they experience higher rates of all types of violence. This increased vulnerability may be due to factors related to di

Disability, program access, empathy and burnout in US medical students: A national study.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to investigate whether self-disclosed disability and self-reported program access are associated with measures of empathy and burnout in a national sample of US medical students. METHODS: The authors obtained data from students who responded to the Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) Year 2 Questionnaire (Y2Q) in 2019 and 2020. Data included demographic characteristics, personal variables, learning environment indicators, measures of burnout (Oldenburg Burnout Inventory for Medical Students), empathy (Interpersonal Reactivity Index) and disability-

Home modifications and disability outcomes: A longitudinal study of older adults living in England.

BACKGROUND: There is limited evidence on the protective effect of housing modifications on disability outcomes among older adults. We examined whether external and internal housing modifications reduce the risk of a range of disability outcomes among older adults living in England. METHODS: We analysed adults aged 60 and over from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, initially recruited in 2002/03. The longitudinal sample consisted of 32,126 repeated observations from 10,459 individuals across 6 waves with an average follow-up of 11·3 years. Participants were asked if their homes had ext

Causes and Trends of Disabilities in Community-Dwelling Stroke Survivors: A Population-Based Study.

Many stroke survivors live with disabilities in the community. This study aimed to investigate the causes and trends of disabilities among community-dwelling stroke survivors. A total of 1547 community-dwelling stroke survivors ≥ 19 years were identified using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) database from 2007 to 2018. We analyzed the causes and trends of disabilities in strokes survivors using complex-samples procedures. During 2007-2018, 38.0% of stroke survivors were found to have disabilities. Stroke itself was the most common cause of disabilities (21.

An 8-year study of admissions and discharges to a specialist intellectual disability inpatient unit.

BACKGROUND: In the United Kingdom, policy change has led to specialist intellectual disability inpatient bed reduction. Little evidence exists assessing the results for patients admitted to such units. This study evaluates the outcomes of a specialist intellectual disability inpatient unit. METHOD: Gender/age/ethnicity/intellectual disability severity/co-morbid psychiatric/developmental disorders, treatment length and stay data were collected. The health of the nation outcome scales for people with learning disabilities (HoNOS-LD) scores at admission, treatment completion and discharge were r

Neural biomarker of functional disability in major depressive disorder: A structural neuroimaging study.

BACKGROUND: Most patients with the major depressive disorder (MDD) have varying degrees of impaired social functioning, and functional improvement often lags behind symptomatic improvement. However, it is still unclear if certain neurobiological factors underlie the deficits of social function in MDD. The aim of this study was to investigate the biomarkers of social function in MDD using structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: 3T anatomical MRI was obtained from 272 subjects including 46 high-functioning (high-SF, Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS) rating < 18) and 63 low-functionin

Photophobia and disability glare in adult patients with Marfan syndrome: a case-control study.

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to investigate photophobia and disability glare in adult patients with Marfan syndrome (MFS). METHODS: In this case-control study, 44 patients with MFS (87 eyes) were compared to 44 controls (88 eyes), who were matched for age and sex. The subjects were asked to grade their photophobia and glare using 10-cm visual analogue scales (VAS), which were marked with 'never' at zero and 'always' at 10 -cm. In addition, disability glare was measured with C-Quant straylight meter. RESULTS: The patients with MFS had significantly higher VAS scores than the cont

Childbirth and motherhood in women with motor disability due to a rare condition: an exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Rare diseases may result in motor impairment, which in turn may affect parenthood. Our purpose was to evaluate perinatal outcomes, parenting needs, mother-infant interactions and infant development in a set of volunteer women with motor impairment due to a rare disease. In a parenting support institution, we recruited a consecutive series of 22 volunteer pregnant women or young mothers, recorded perinatal outcomes, and followed mother-infant interaction and relationship and infant development up to 14 months postpartum. Cases with intellectual or psychic disability were not include

The license plate test performance in Canadian adolescents with learning disabilities: A preliminary study.

Accurate identification of symptom exaggeration is essential when determining whether data obtained in pediatric evaluations are valid or interpretable. Performance validity measures identify performance patterns that are implausible if the test taker is investing full effort; however, it is unclear whether or not persons with preexisting cognitive difficulties such as Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) might be falsely accused of poor test motivation due to actual but impaired reading, processing or memory skills. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the newly developed License Plate T

COVID-19 deaths in people with intellectual disability in the UK and Ireland: descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Rapid spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has affected people with intellectual disability disproportionately. Existing data does not provide enough information to understand factors associated with increased deaths in those with intellectual disability. Establishing who is at high risk is important in developing prevention strategies, given risk factors or comorbidities in people with intellectual disability may be different to those in the general population. AIMS: To identify comorbidities, demographic and clinical factors of those individuals with intellectual disabi

Physical activity trajectories, mortality, hospitalization, and disability in the Toledo Study of Healthy Aging.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) is a recognized contributor to healthy aging. However, the majority of studies exploring its associations with adverse outcomes in cohorts of older adults use single-time PA estimates, which do not consider its dynamic nature. The aim of the present study is to explore the presence of different PA trajectories in the Toledo Study of Healthy Aging and their association with adverse outcomes. Our hypothesis is that prospectively maintaining or increasing PA is associated with a reduced risk of adverse outcomes. METHODS: We used data from 1679 participants enro

[Modifications in therapy for patients with severe mental illness and intellectual disability: a qualitative study].

In ambulant psychiatric care, intellectual disability (id) is often not recognised. Therefore, a Screener for Intelligence and Learning disabilities (scil) was recently introduced to assist recognition. However, because, current therapy is not adjusted for id-related problems, its effectiveness remains unknown.<br/> AIM: To gain insight into adequate adaptation of interventions by professionals for patients with severe mental illness (smi) and id, to improve the quality of care without the need to develop a completely new program of therapy.<br/> METHOD: A qualitative design (n=15) including 8
