Drought poses a major threat to global food security, making it critical to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying plant responses to water scarcity. Epigenetic modifications, including DNA methylation and histone alterations, play central roles in regulating genes and hormonal pathways essential for drought adaptation. MicroRNAs, while primarily functioning as post-transcriptional regulators, can also influence epigenetic pathways and contribute to chromatin remodelling, suggesting a role in modulating epigenetic memory. Investigating these interactions is essential for understanding

Drought stress is a major constraint on maize seedling establishment and yield stability. In this study, we functionally characterized ZmPIP1;6, that encodes a maize plasma membrane intrinsic protein, and investigated its regulation pathway and allelic variation in relation to drought tolerance. ZmPIP1;6 was predominantly expressed in seedling roots and was induced by drought stress. Functional analyses indicated that ZmPIP1;6 positively regulates drought tolerance in maize seedlings. We further showed that the transcription factor ZmIBH1-L1 directly binds to the ZmPIP1;6 promoter and activate

Drought stress affects plant growth, and it can directly kill plants in severe cases. Drought stress is one of the major abiotic stresses affecting soybean growth and yield. The Bax Inhibitor-1 (BI-1) can inhibit cell death mediated by both biotic and abiotic stresses. However, the function of GmBI-1 genes from soybean remains unclear under drought stress. In this study, we found four GmBI-1 genes in soybean, and the GmBI-1b was significantly induced under drought stress at RNA and protein levels. The expression level of GmBI-1b was highest in leaves, and the GmBI-1b protein was localized to t

Drought is a major abiotic constraint on soybean productivity and an increasing challenge for agricultural sustainability under water-limited conditions. Understanding plant responses to drought is essential for identifying traits associated with crop adaptation and resilience. This study evaluated the physiological responses of three Mexican soybean genotypes (E2309, I1240, and I700) to 17 days of progressive drought during the reproductive stage, followed by an 8-day recovery period after re-watering. Control plants remained well-watered throughout the experiment. Canopy wilting, stomatal co

Drought severely limits wheat productivity, highlighting the need for tolerant genetic resources. Targeted allele mining and high-throughput phenotyping (HTP) were combined to assess natural variation in TdBCAT genes and drought response in 38 durum wheat genotypes. A cost-effective strategy integrating next-generation sequencing and Kompetitive Allele Specific PCR (KASP) genotyping identified 27 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 10 haplotypes across TdBCAT-A and TdBCAT-B, mainly in promoter regions. Under controlled drought, RGB imaging and the digital biovolume ratio (DBR) classifie

Climate change threatens global food security by imposing concurrent abiotic and biotic stresses on major crops such as rice. Genetic resources conferring dual resistance to drought and blast disease are rare, limiting the development of climate-resilient crops. Here, using a genome-wide association study, we identify NLR8-Hap2, a natural allele of the rice resistance gene NLR8 that enhances resistance to drought and blast disease. A single-base deletion in the NLR8-Hap2 coding sequence generates a premature stop codon, resulting in a protein lacking the C-terminal leucine-rich repeat (LRR) do

Drought inhibits grass development and survival. However, molecular-based studies on drought tolerance mechanisms in bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) remain scarce. Therefore, a drought-resistant bermudagrass (Tianshui) and a drought-sensitive (Zhengzhou) genotype were selected and subjected to 28 days of 50% drought stress. Leaves were sampled for RNA sequencing. Under drought stress, 2410 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were discovered in which 1214 were upregulated (tolerant vs. sensitive) and 1196 downregulated. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) indicated that these speci

This study provides the first integrative assessment of drought stress memory in a halophyte, highlighting the role of recurrent drought in shaping physiological and molecular responses in plants adapted to unpredictable and stressful environments. Here, we investigated the physiological, biochemical and transcriptomic responses of the xerohalophyte Atriplex halimus L. exposed to one, two or three consecutive drought cycles (D1-D3). Each cycle consisted of severe water deficit (<5% field capacity) followed by a rehydration phase, evaluating water relations, gas exchange, phytohormone profiles,

Salt and drought (SD) stress often occur simultaneously, posing severe challenges to grapevine cultivation. Grafting resistant rootstocks is considered a simple and effective method for enhancing grapevine tolerance to environmental stress. This study assessed the performance of different resistant seedlings to SD stress, including the self-rooted seedlings of the SD-sensitive grapevine cultivar 'Shine Muscat' (SM), self-rooted seedlings of the highly SD-tolerant cultivar 'Thompson Seedless' (TS), and grafted seedlings SM/TS. We examined changes in growth, photosynthetic performance, osmotic r

Microbial CO2 fixation in alpine grassland soils is highly sensitive to warming and drought. Nitrogen inputs from grazing may stimulate autotrophic nitrifiers, including ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). These nitrifiers assimilate carbon through CO2 fixation, but how their activity is associated with microbial CO2 fixation under warming and drought remains unclear. Here, we investigated microbial CO2 fixation and nitrification under altered temperature and moisture using urea-amended soil microcosms with 13CO2 labeling, DN

With the popularization of upland rice cultivation and the intensification of global warming, drought tolerance in rice has become a critical agronomic challenge. Plant endophytes can establish symbiotic relationships with host plants and enhance plant stress tolerance. Previous studies have demonstrated that Phomopsis liquidambaris B3 (P. liquidambaris B3) can form a stable symbiosis with rice and improve plant disease resistance. However, whether this strain can enhance rice drought tolerance remains unclear. In this study, a 7-day water-withholding treatment was imposed on rice at the seedl

This study investigated the effects of drought during reproductive and boll development stages under elevated CO2 conditions. A pot experiment was conducted in the Soil-Plant-Atmospheric-Research (SPAR) facility using the upland cotton cultivar DP 1646 B2XF grown under control (well-watered; 0.12 m3 H2O m-3 soil) and drought (0.09 m3 H2O m-3 soil) conditions at ambient (425 ppm; aCO2) and enriched (725 ppm; eCO2) CO2 concentrations. Under drought stress, photosynthesis and stomatal conductance decreased by 35% and 63%, respectively, under aCO2, whereas reductions were less pronounced under eCO

BACKGROUND: Global drought represents a pressing environmental challenge, necessitating a deeper comprehension of how plant species at various stages of drought response adapt to such stress. Cotinus coggygria, a deciduous tree species known for its autumn color transformation, holds significance for arid and semi-arid ecological contexts. Presently, investigations into C. coggygria primarily concentrate on the effect of drought on its leaf color, with limited examination of the fundamental mechanisms involved. Through the merging of physiological and transcriptomic data analysis of C. coggygr

Drought and heavy metal contamination are major abiotic stresses that compromise plant growth and productivity. Small heat shock proteins (Hsp20s) act as ATP-independent molecular chaperones that are implicated in maintaining cellular proteostasis; however, their precise physiological roles and modes of action in plant stress tolerance remain poorly understood. Here, we showed that the transcript abundance of cytoplasm-localized AtHsp18.5 (AT2G19310) from Arabidopsis thaliana, one member of the CIV group, was strongly induced by both drought and lead (Pb) stress. Recombinant AtHsp18.5 exhibite

Drought is one of the major environmental constraints limiting tomato growth and productivity. Identifying regulators that enhance drought tolerance without compromising plant growth is therefore important for tomato production. Homeodomain-leucine zipper (HD-Zip) transcription factors (TFs) play essential roles in plant development and abiotic stress responses; however, the functions of most HD-Zip II members in tomato remain poorly understood. Here, we identified SlHZ07, a drought-responsive HD-Zip II TF, through transcriptome analysis and characterized its biological function in tomato. SlH

Drought stress is one of the major factors limiting the growth and productivity of agricultural crops, including shallot (Allium ascalonicum L.). This study aimed to investigate the role of symbiotic associations between dark septate endophytes (DSEs) and shallot plants in improving growth performance, physiological responses, and yield under varying field capacity. A factorial completely randomized design was employed with two factors: DSE inoculation (without DSE, Cladophialophora nyingchiensis S51, and Diaporthe pandanicola TM1) and field capacity levels (100%, 80%, 50%, and 30% of availabl

The interplay between vegetation and meteorological drought within the growing season involves complex dynamics. A key aspect of evaluating ecosystem stability lies in precisely determining the drought trigger threshold that leads to vegetation degradation. However, the dynamic evolution pattern and driving mechanisms of the drought trigger threshold remain unclear. To address this, the present study was conducted in the Weihe River Basin (WRB), with the core growing season (defined as May to September) serving as the temporal scope. A novel assessment framework was established based on the Co

Root system architecture (RSA) is a key determinant of drought adaptation, particularly in rainfed crops such as common vetch (Vicia sativa L.). This study evaluated RSA traits together with shoot and root biomass in seedlings of 27 vetch genotypes from six countries under control conditions and water stress induced by 12.5% polyethylene glycol (PEG) using the rhizoslide system. Substantial genetic variation was detected for all traits, with generally high coefficients of variation and broad sense heritability. Significant genotype × environment interactions were observed for all traits except
