Ecological momentary assessment of cigarette smoking behavior and pain intensity among individuals with chronic back pain who smoke.

Chronic pain affects ∼20% of the adult population and is associated with smoking. Smoking and pain worsen each other in the long term, but short-term temporal associations between smoking and pain throughout the day are unclear. Understanding these relationships may inform strategies for managing comorbid smoking and pain. Participants with chronic back pain who smoke responded to 81.5% of ecological momentary assessment (EMA) prompts delivered 5 times daily. Independent variables were: 1) urge to smoke (from 1-9), 2) intention to smoke (about to smoke, not about to smoke), and 3) smoking rece

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) use for self-management of pain: Insights from cross-sectional and ecological momentary assessment data.

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is increasingly used in the US for self-management of pain, despite limited research on its efficacy and safety. To better understand how and why people use kratom for pain self-management, we analyzed baseline survey data (N = 395) and 15-day ecological momentary assessment (EMA) data (N = 357) from kratom consumers across the US. Although we recruited participants based on their kratom use, not on whether they used it for pain management, nearly half (49.1 %) met criteria for chronic pain, with many reporting substantial pain relief and high effectiveness of krato

Sleep quality and disruptive nocturnal behaviors as short-term predictors of suicidal intent: An ecological momentary assessment study.

BACKGROUND: Emerging research suggests that poor sleep quality and some disruptive nocturnal behaviors (DNBs) may be advance markers of short-term worsening in suicidal intent. However, relationships between many types of DNBs and suicide risk have not been examined, and whether DNBs provide useful information apart from sleep quality in predicting suicidal intent is unknown. This study addressed these critical knowledge gaps by examining associations between sleep quality, DNBs, and next-day suicidal intent in a community sample of adults. METHODS: A sample of 237 adults with severe suicidal

Reliability (or lack thereof) of smartphone ecological momentary assessment of visual dot probe attention bias toward threat indices.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cognitive bias theories posit that generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) are entwined with attention bias toward threats, commonly indexed by faster response time (RT) on threat-congruent (vs. threat-incongruent) trials on the visual dot probe. Moreover, although smartphone ecological momentary assessment (EMA) of the visual dot probe has been developed, their psychometric properties are understudied. This study thus aimed to assess the reliability of 8 smartphone-delivered visual dot probe attention bias and related indices in persons

Day-to-day affect fluctuations in adults with childhood trauma history: a two-week ecological momentary assessment study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma (CT) may increase vulnerability to psychopathology through affective dysregulation (greater variability, autocorrelation, and instability of emotional symptoms). However, CT associations with dynamic affect fluctuations while considering differences in mean affect levels across CT status have been understudied. METHODS: 346 adults (age = 49.25 ± 12.55, 67.0% female) from the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety participated in ecological momentary assessment. Positive and negative affect (PA, NA) were measured five times per day for two weeks by electronic

Reward mediates the association between engagement in noneating activities and state body dissatisfaction: An ecological momentary assessment study.

OBJECTIVE: Momentary worsening (i.e., greater than one's average levels) of state body dissatisfaction (BD) has been implicated as a proximal risk factor for eating disorder (ED) behaviors in binge-spectrum EDs. Yet, research exploring the prospective association between noneating activities in daily life (e.g., chores, self-care/coping) and momentary state BD remains limited. Understanding the momentary link between engagement in noneating activities and state BD, and pathways through which engagement in said activities influences momentary state BD is critical to informing treatments. The cu

III. Detecting Treatment Effects in Clinical Trials With Different Indices of Pain Intensity Derived From Ecological Momentary Assessment.

Pain intensity represents the primary outcome in most pain clinical trials. Identifying methods to measure aspects of pain that are most sensitive to treatment may facilitate discovery of effective interventions. In this third of 3 articles examining alternative indices of pain intensity derived from ecological momentary assessments (EMA), we compare treatment effects based on Average Pain, Maximum Pain, Minimum Pain, Pain Variability, Time in High Pain, Time in Low Pain, and Pain After Wake-Up. We also examine which indices contribute to Patient Global Impressions of Change (PGIC). Data came

The temporal course and clinical correlates of subjective impulsivity in bipolar disorder as revealed through ecological momentary assessment.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is frequently linked with bipolar disorder and is associated with mania and negative outcomes. The temporal dynamics of subjective impulsivity are unclear, in particular whether impulsivity precedes or follows changes in positive or negative affect. METHODS: A total of 41 outpatients with bipolar disorder (I or II) were provided with mobile devices for 11 weeks and completed twice-daily surveys about affective states and subjective impulsivity. We examined the association between aggregate subjective impulsivity with baseline global cognitive function, suicide risk rat

Nonsuicidal self-injury and affect regulation: recent findings from experimental and ecological momentary assessment studies and future directions.

CONTEXT: Although research indicates that nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) may be used as a form of emotion regulation, studies have largely relied on the use of retrospective self-report data, which limits inferences about directionality of effects. Recently, researchers have started to employ lab-based experimental (e.g., guided imagery, acute pain) and moment sampling approaches to the study of NSSI. METHODS: In the present study, we conducted a review of this recent literature, using several electronic databases (e.g., PsychINFO, ERIC, CINAHL). RESULTS: We identified 18 studies that met ou

Personality-based subtypes of anorexia nervosa: examining validity and utility using baseline clinical variables and ecological momentary assessment.

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to empirically derive and validate clinically relevant personality-based subtypes of anorexia nervosa (AN). METHODS: Women (N = 116) with full or subthreshold AN completed baseline measures of personality, clinical variables, and eating disorder (ED) symptoms, followed by two weeks of ecological momentary assessment (EMA). A latent profile analysis was conducted to identify personality subtypes, which were compared on baseline clinical variables and EMA variables. RESULTS: The best-fitting model supported three subtypes: underregulated, overregulated, and low psy

Intensive longitudinal assessment of stress and stress-related concepts across a weight loss program: Protocol for a longitudinal ecological momentary assessment study.

BACKGROUND: Fluctuations in daily stress and the inability to cope with this stress (i.e., coping) can negatively impact behavior and potentially weight loss. Longitudinal studies using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) of psychological factors and behavior may inform interventions that can be adapted in real-time to modify stress and stress-related factors to enhance weight loss. This study's purpose is to examine variability in stress and stress-related concepts and weight loss during a behavioral weight loss program with the intent of this informing future interventions. METHODS: Indiv

Evaluating emotional clarity and concordance in ambulatory physiological data and ecological momentary assessments in an adolescent clinical sample.

The concordance between physiological and subjective experiences of emotion is viewed as a core aspect of emotion and an important factor underlying psychopathology and well-being. However, there is a lack of research investigating concordance in ecologically valid contexts. Additionally, trait-level risk factors that may moderate concordance have yet to be thoroughly examined. The current study aimed (1) to determine whether concordance for naturally occurring affect is present at the within-person level and (2) to evaluate emotional clarity as a moderator of concordance in ecologically valid

A Personalized Data Dashboard to Improve Compliance with Ecological Momentary Assessments in College Students: Protocol for a Microrandomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: Ecological momentary assessments (EMA) are ideal for capturing the dynamic nature of young adult substance use behavior in daily life and identifying contextual risk factors that signal higher-risk episodes. These methods could provide a signal to trigger real-time intervention delivery. Study compliance and engagement are common barriers to participation but may be improved by personalizing messages. This study compares compliance outcomes between one group of young adults receiving standard (generic) prompts at each assessment and another group that received additional personaliz
