A landscape analysis of perinatal mental health delivery among stakeholders in Ecuador and Peru.

Perinatal mental health disorders are prevalent in Ecuador and Peru. Despite national health policies supporting maternal mental health care, service provision remains fragmented, relying on a mix of public, private, and nongovernmental actors. This study examined professional interest holders' perceptions of barriers to perinatal mental health care and the solutions they propose. We employed a mixed-methods approach. First, a systematic review of publicly available data was conducted to identify organizations engaged in maternal and mental health care in Ecuador and Peru. Following this, in-d

Assessing the Acceptability of a Vaginal Self-Sampling Device in a Rural Parish of Cuenca, Ecuador.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical Cancer (CC) is a preventable and treatable disease if detected early, yet it remains a global health challenge. In Ecuador, CC is the second most common cancer; however, screening uptake remains suboptimal due to poor knowledge, low willingness, and limited access to healthcare. Traditionally, CC screening requires a healthcare professional, creating social and access barriers. Innovative techniques such as "self-sampling" (SS) for human papillomavirus (HPV) detection offer a promising alternative. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the acceptability, attitudes, and user e

The determinants of the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in agriculture: insights from Ecuador.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is important to reduce the adverse effects of pesticides on human health. Nevertheless, there are several factors why farmers decide not to use PPE. With official data from the Continuous Area and Agricultural Production Survey (ESPAC) 2022, this paper analyzes the determinants of the use of PPE in Ecuadorian agriculture. This large data set (n = 10,039) with national representation provides a complete picture of the country's diverse ethnicities, geographies, and crops. The results reveal that a majority of operators in the sample (96.53%) used at least one

Internal migration and its association with childhood asthma in Ecuador: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Differences in asthma prevalence between urban and rural areas have been observed worldwide. Epidemiological studies in middle- and low-income countries suggest that internal migration processes may partly explain these disparities. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between internal migration and asthma in children living in transitional areas of Ecuador. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from a birth cohort of children living in a tropical coastal region in northwestern Ecuador. Asthma indicators included wheezing in the past 12 months, ever wheez

Spatial clusters, temporal behavior, and risk factors analysis of rabies in livestock in Ecuador.

Rabies, a globally distributed and highly lethal zoonotic neglected tropical disease, has a significant impact in South America. In Ecuador, animal rabies cases are primarily linked to livestock, and hematophagous bats play a crucial role in disease transmission. This study aims to identify temporal trends, spatial patterns, and risk factors for animal rabies in Ecuador between 2014 and 2019. Epidemiological survey reports from the official Animal Rabies Surveillance Program of the Phyto and Zoosanitary Regulation and Control Agency of Ecuador (AGROCALIDAD) were used. The Animal Rabies Surveil

Dog bites as a zoonotic risk in Ecuador: Need for the implementation of a One Health approach.

Rabies is a viral zoonotic disease that can infect all mammals and the main route of transmission to human is attributed to dog bites. Due to the limited information available about the rabies vaccination coverage, although Ecuador is supposed to be free of rabies, we conducted a retrospective study of the epidemiological surveillance records on the notification of dog attacks to humans in Guayaquil, the most populated city in Ecuador. The results showed an annual incidence rate of 105.6 dog bites per 100,000 inhabitants, where the most affected anatomical parts are the lower extremities; indi

Data on antibiogram and resistance genes of Enterobacterales isolated from fresh vegetables in Ecuador.

This article describes the occurrence, antibiograms, and detection of antibiotic resistance genes of Enterobacterales isolated from fresh vegetables commercialized in Riobamba, Ecuador. Escherichia coli isolates were screened to detect diarrheagenic pathotypes via PCR. Agar diffusion assay was performed to determine the phenotypic antibiotic resistance of the Enterobacterales strains. The presence of antibiotic resistance genes conferring resistance against beta-lactams, mobile colistin resistance, carbapenems, quinolones, tetracyclines, and sulphonamides was detected via PCR amplification.

Exceptional Prices of Medical and Other Supplies during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Ecuador.

Shortages of essential supplies used to prevent, diagnose, and treat COVID-19 have been a global concern, and price speculation and hikes may have negatively influenced access. This study identifies variability in prices of products acquired through government-driven contracts in Ecuador during the early pandemic response, when the highest mortality rates were registered in a single day. Data were obtained from the National Public Procurement Service (SERCOP) database between March 1 and July 31, 2020. A statistical descriptive analysis was conducted to extract relevant measures for commonly p

A network analysis framework to improve the delivery of mosquito abatement services in Machala, Ecuador.

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne disease places a high health and economic burden in the American tropics. Comprehensive vector control programs remain the primary method of containing local outbreaks. With limited resources, many vector control operations struggle to serve all affected communities within their districts. In the coastal city of Machala, Ecuador, vector control services, such as application of larvicides and truck-mounted fogging, are delivered through two deployment facilities managed by the Ecuadorian Ministry of Health. Public health professionals in Machala face several logistical
