Maximum shear strain-based algorithm can predict proteoglycan loss in damaged articular cartilage.

Post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) is a common disease, where the mechanical integrity of articular cartilage is compromised. PTOA can be a result of chondral defects formed due to injurious loading. One of the first changes around defects is proteoglycan depletion. Since there are no methods to restore injured cartilage fully back to its healthy state, preventing the onset and progression of the disease is advisable. However, this is problematic if the disease progression cannot be predicted. Thus, we developed an algorithm to predict proteoglycan loss of injured cartilage by decreasing the

Evaluation of hyperelastic models for the non-linear and non-uniform high strain-rate mechanics of tibial cartilage.

Accurate modeling of the high strain-rate response of healthy human knee cartilage is critical to investigating the mechanism(s) of knee osteoarthritis and other cartilage disorders. Osteoarthritis has been suggested to originate from regional shifts in joint loading during walking and other high strain-rate physical activities. Tibial plateau cartilage under compression rates analogous to walking exhibits a non-linear and location-dependent mechanical response. A constitutive model of cartilage that efficiently predicts the non-linear and non-uniform high strain-rate mechanics of tibial plate

[Acoustic and mechanical properties of tympanic membrane transplants].

BACKGROUND: The human tympanic membrane has reasonably good sound transmission properties and withstands high static pressure loads. Destruction of the tympanic membrane resulting from middle ear diseases or trauma may be repaired by different types of grafts. Middle ear surgery mostly uses autologous temporal fascia, cartilage, or cartilage perichondrium transplants which differ in their acoustical characteristics and mechanical strength. METHODS: We have investigated the acoustical and mechanical properties of these materials and compared them with human tympanic membranes by constructing a

Nanoallotrope-integrated polyacrylamide hydrogels: a synergistic experiment-theory approach for engineering mechanically resilient and cytocompatible composites for cartilage tissue regeneration.

Polyacrylamide (PAM)-based hydrogels are commonly acknowledged as promising contenders for replacing cartilage. Nevertheless, their restricted mechanical strength and puncture resistance greatly impeded their ability to be used in biological applications. The current investigation aimed to increase the strength of polyacrylamide hydrogels by including carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene oxide (GO) in various concentrations in a PAM matrix. Combining CNT and GO nanoparticles with PAM results in a synergistic effect and a strong interfacial bonding. This leads to high compressive strength and e

Mechanobiology of soft skeletal tissue differentiation--a computational approach of a fiber-reinforced poroelastic model based on homogeneous and isotropic simplifications.

The material properties of multipotent mesenchymal tissue change dramatically during the differentiation process associated with skeletal regeneration. Using a mechanobiological tissue differentiation concept, and homogeneous and isotropic simplifications of a fiber-reinforced poroelastic model of soft skeletal tissues, we have developed a mathematical approach for describing time-dependent material property changes during the formation of cartilage, fibrocartilage, and fibrous tissue under various loading histories. In this approach, intermittently imposed fluid pressure and tensile strain re

Dermatologic, Orthopedic, and Cardiovascular Manifestations and Management in a Geriatric Patient With Dermatosparaxis-Type Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: A Case Report.

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a diverse group of hereditary connective tissue disorders resulting from mutations in genes involved in the synthesis and metabolism of collagens. Collagen, a structural protein in the connective tissues, plays an important role in maintaining the integrity and strength of various tissues, including the skin, ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and blood vessels. As such, EDS is characterized by joint hypermobility, skin elasticity, and tissue fragility. This paper discusses the case of an elderly patient with dermatosparaxis-type EDS (dEDS), a rare autosomal recessi

Finite element simulations of a hip joint with femoroacetabular impingement.

In this study, a three-dimensional finite element (FE) model based on the specific anatomy of a patient presenting a femoroacetabular impingement of the 'cam'-type is developed. The FE meshes of the structures of interest are obtained from arthrographic magnetic resonance images. All soft tissues are considered linear elastic and isotropic, and the bones were assumed rigid. A compression of the femur on the acetabular cavity as well as flexural movements and internal rotations are applied. Stresses and contact pressures are evaluated in this patient-specific model in order to better interpret

Pediatric spinal trauma: injuries in very young children.

Injuries to the spine in very young children are comparatively rare. The prevalence of upper cervical injuries and spinal cord injuries is greater. Spinal cord injury is more common in young children and fracture is less common than in older children and adolescents. This is because of the anatomic and biomechanical differences in the growing spine including a more horizontal facet orientation, greater elasticity of the soft tissues, less muscular development, and relatively greater head size compared to the trunk. These features are more pronounced in the very young child. The clinical and ra

Arthroscopic chondral cyst excision in a stiff Perthes' hip.

Persistent hip stiffness in Perthes' disease indicates a poor prognosis and is a therapeutic challenge. We report a case of a 13-year-old boy with a stiff Perthes' hip that was nonresponsive to prolonged nonsurgical treatment. Imaging revealed Catterall group IV Perthes' disease in an advanced reossification stage, with a focal defect in the weight-bearing area of the capital femoral epiphysis. A focal, compressible chondral elevation was detected on hip arthroscopy; on incision, flocculent fluid was released. After the cyst was excised, microfracture revascularization of the chondral defect w

A review on the wide range applications of hyaluronic acid as a promising rejuvenating biomacromolecule in the treatments of bone related diseases.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a multifunctional high molecular weight polysaccharide produced by synoviocytes, fibroblasts, and chondrocytes, and is naturally found in many tissues and fluids, and more abundantly in articular cartilage and synovial fluid. Naturally occurring HA is thought to participate in many biological processes, such as regulation of cell adhesion and cell motility, manipulation of cell differentiation and proliferation, and providing mechanical properties to tissues (Girish and Kemparaju, 2007). Due to its excellent physicochemical properties such as high viscosity, elasticity,

Morphological study of larynx, trachea, and lungs of Didelphis marsupialis (LINNAEUS, 1758).

BACKGROUND AND AIM: From a biomedical point of view, the value of marsupials as a model of primitive mammals is indisputable. Among its species, the possum is a model that allows the study of the ontogeny of different organic systems, as well as their physiological aspects. The relevance of anatomical, functional, evolutionary, and phylogenetic study of marsupials for the development of comparative morphology is extensively documented in the literature. However, there are still many aspects to be further evaluated, as the anatomy and histology of the respiratory tract of this species. The aim

Delineation of in vitro chondrogenesis of human synovial stem cells following preconditioning using decellularized matrix.

As a tissue-specific stem cell for chondrogenesis, synovium-derived stem cells (SDSCs) are a promising cell source for cartilage repair. However, a small biopsy can only provide a limited number of cells. Cell senescence from both in vitro expansion and donor age presents a big challenge for stem cell based cartilage regeneration. Here we found that expansion on decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) full of three-dimensional nanostructured fibers provided SDSCs with unique surface profiles, low elasticity but large volume as well as a fibroblast-like shape. dECM expanded SDSCs yielded lar

Management of the hairline using a local flap in total reconstruction for microtia.

In cases of microtia with a low hairline, the manner in which hair is removed from the reconstructed auricle must be taken into consideration. This is one of the most common but difficult problems with reconstruction for microtia. The authors describe a new technique that uses a simple regional flap to resolve this problem. The hair-bearing skin in the estimated auricular region and its covering are removed using a local flap from the hairless mastoid region. This is done in the first stage of auricular reconstruction, the costal cartilage grafting is done in the second stage, and elevation of

Micro-Rheology of an Articular Viscosupplement for Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a widespread joint disease that affects people across a wide range of ages. In RA, the viscoelastic properties of synovial fluid (SF) are significantly compromised, reducing its ability to protect cartilage surfaces during joint movements. Importantly, unlike osteoarthritis, hyaluronic acid (HA) viscosupplements are not effective for the treatment of RA, as they are prone to degradation in the lactic acid environment of RA-affected joints. Therefore, it is crucial to develop viscosupplements that can maintain viscoelastic properties in joints with elevated lactic a

The Porosity and Stiffness of Articular Cartilage Extracellular Matrix Derived Scaffolds Modulate Chondrogenesis of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells.

Articular cartilage (AC) regeneration remains a major challenge in musculoskeletal tissue engineering. Cartilage extracellular matrix (ECM)-derived scaffolds have shown promise as tissue-specific biomaterials, but the extent to which the fabrication process can be tuned to modulate scaffold pore architecture and mechanics and how this might influence the chondrogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) remains incompletely defined. The aim of this study was to develop solubilized porcine AC-ECM scaffolds with controlled differences in pore size and matrix stiffness, and to

[Contribution of genetics to pathogenicity and diagnosis of Marfan syndrome].

The anatomical substrate of Marfan's syndrome is a degeneration of elastic fibres and disorganization of the collagen. It is now known that these lesions are due to mutation of genes localised on chromosome 15. The first of them (FBN1) codes for the main constitutive protein of the elastic tissue: fibrillin 1, present mainly in structures which must resist load and stress (aortic adventitia, the suspending ligament of the lens, skin); the second (FBN2) codes for fibrillin 2: responsible for the orientation of the elastin and mainly present in cartilage, the aortic media, the bronchi, and all t

Articular cartilage compressive stiffness following oophorectomy or treatment with 17beta-estradiol in young postpubertal rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Changes in estrogen concentrations during adolescence (contraceptives, secondary amenorrhea) may influence cartilage mechanics and therefore its capacity to respond adequately to physical demands. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of oophorectomy or continuous administration of estradiol on cartilage compressive properties in an immature animal model. METHODS: Young postpubertal female New Zealand white rabbits were either oophorectomized (n=9) or underwent a sham-operation (n=8). The sham-operated animals received in addition a daily dosage of 4 mg 17beta
