Traumatic injuries by conducted electrical weapons: Case report of self-injury to the hand during stun gun training.

The use of non-lethal weapons has spread worldwide, being introduced as an alternative to firearms in many countries such as the United States or the United Kingdom. Among non-lethal weapons, conducted electrical weapons have been adopted worldwide, to control unruly suspected criminals or to neutralise violent situations. The stun gun belongs to this category and is the most widely available, with more than 140,000 units in use by police officers in the field in the US, and an additional 100,000 electrical stun guns owned by civilians worldwide. In Italy, the use of conducted electrical weapo

High-voltage electrical injury complicated by diffuse pulmonary haemorrhage: a case report.

BACKGROUND: High-voltage electrical injury is rare but potentially fatal, often affecting multiple organs. Pulmonary haemorrhage is an exceptionally uncommon complication. CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old man sustained a 100-kV electrical injury with 40% total body surface area burns. On hospital day 4, he developed acute dyspnoea and haemoptysis. Chest CT revealed rapidly progressive bilateral infiltrates, and fiberoptic bronchoscopy confirmed diffuse endobronchial haemorrhage. He received invasive mechanical ventilation, repeated bronchoscopic clearance of bloody secretions, continuous rena

Injury patterns and safety implications for electric bikes compared to mopeds in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: Electric bikes (e-bikes) are increasingly popular in the United States, with studies documenting increased injuries associated with their use. U.S. laws vary widely with licensure required in only 7 states, age restriction and helmet use varying by bike class in 35. This differs from the stricter regulations applied to higher-speed vehicles like mopeds. This study examines numbers of injuries and characteristics of serious injury events, comparing e-bikes to the more regulated moped. METHODS: Emergency department data from 2019 to 2023 was extracted from the U.S. Consumer Product S

Outcomes of electrical injuries in the emergency department: epidemiology, severity predictors, and chronic sequelae.

INTRODUCTION: Electrical injuries (EIs) represent a significant clinical challenge due to their complex pathophysiology and variable presentation, ranging from minor burns to severe internal organ damage. Despite their prevalence in both; domestic and occupational settings, there remains a rareness of systematic guidelines and comprehensive literature to aid clinicians in effectively managing these injuries. Understanding these factors is crucial for developing protocols that can mitigate the risk of delayed complications, such as cardiac arrhythmias, in patients who initially appear stable.

Electric-bicycles and speed-related trauma in pediatrics: Risk of internal injury and hospitalization.

BACKGROUND: Electric bicycles (e-bikes) are becoming increasingly popular, offering higher speeds compared to traditional pedal bicycles. Despite their growing use, there is limited data on the epidemiology of e-bike related injuries in the pediatric population. Specifically, previous studies have not adequately explored the injury circumstances regarding e-bikes, particularly concerning loss of control due to speed. This study aims to assess the patterns and outcomes of e-bike injuries in children, hypothesizing that speeds higher than 20 miles per hour (MPH) result in more internal injuries

Noninvasive Electrical Modalities to Alleviate Respiratory Deficits Following Spinal Cord Injury.

(1) Background: Respiratory dysfunction is a debilitating consequence of cervical and thoracic spinal cord injury (SCI), resulting from the loss of cortico-spinal drive to respiratory motor networks. This impairment affects both central and peripheral nervous systems, disrupting motor control and muscle innervation, which is essential for effective breathing. These deficits significantly impact the health and quality of life of individuals with SCI. Noninvasive stimulation techniques targeting these networks have emerged as a promising strategy to restore respiratory function. This study syste

The Power of Movement: A Comprehensive Case Study of Physiotherapeutic Approaches in Electrical Injury Rehabilitation.

Electrical injuries are common phenomena in developing countries, due to inadequate safety measures followed during day-to-day electrical repairs. Workplace injuries account for 20% of these. In some severe cases, electrical injuries lead to burns, indirect fracture dislocations, speech impairments, etc. Falls due to electrical injuries leading to secondary complications are very common and, even though not very severe, they do require immediate treatment and adequate rehabilitation. A 53-year-old male suffered a shoulder injury following an electrical shock. The patient also experienced irrit

Effects of functional electrical stimulation on muscle health after spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injury is a devastating condition interrupting voluntary movement and motor control. In response to unloading, skeletal muscle undergoes numerous adaptations, including rapid and profound atrophy, intramuscular fat accumulation, impaired muscular glucose metabolism and decreased force generation and muscle performance. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) involves electrically stimulating affected muscles to contract in a coordinated manner to create a functional movement or task. Effects of FES-cycling, rowing and resistance training on muscle health are described here. Briefly

Traumatic Pneumocephalus Without Skull Fracture From a High-Voltage Electrical Injury.

Pneumocephalus, the presence of intracranial air, most commonly occurs secondary to a traumatic injury. Patients with simple pneumocephalus often present with nonspecific symptoms or with headaches. These patients may have little to no clinically relevant physical examination findings and can be managed conservatively. Tension pneumocephalus can present more acutely as a neurosurgical emergency. On physical examination, patients can present with neurologic deficits or papilledema. Computed tomography is the imaging modality of choice to detect intracranial air. We present a novel case of a sim
