Link Between Electroacupuncture Stimulation near the Sympathetic Trunk and Heart Rate Variability.

BACKGROUND: The cardiovascular system and airway smooth muscles are regulated by the autonomic nervous system. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the effect of electrical acupuncture stimulation near the cervical sympathetic ganglia on heart rate variability and respiratory function. METHODS: This prospective, single-center study at Teikyo Heisei University recruited 24 healthy adults randomly assigned to no-stimulation and electroacupuncture (EA) groups in a crossover trial with a 2-week washout period. After 5 min of rest, a 5-min rest or acupuncture stimulus was delivered, followed by a

PAC1 Receptor Mediates Electroacupuncture-Induced Neuro and Immune Protection During Cisplatin Chemotherapy.

Platinum-based chemotherapy is an effective treatment used in multiple tumor treatments, but produces severe side effects including neurotoxicity, anemia, and immunosuppression, which limits its anti-tumor efficacy and increases the risk of infections. Electroacupuncture (EA) is often used to ameliorate these side effects, but its mechanism is unknown. Here, we report that EA on ST36 and SP6 prevents cisplatin-induced neurotoxicity and immunosuppression. EA induces neuroprotection, prevents pain-related neurotoxicity, preserves bone marrow (BM) hematopoiesis, and peripheral levels of leukocyte

Fatal bilateral pneumothoraces after electroacupuncture treatment: A case report and literature review.

Acupuncture is practiced as a complementary medicine worldwide. Although it is considered a safe practice, pneumothorax is one of its most common serious complications. However, there have been few reports of deaths due to pneumothorax after acupuncture treatment, especially focused on electroacupuncture. We report an autopsy case of a man in his 60s who went into cardiopulmonary arrest and died immediately after receiving electroacupuncture. Postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) showed bilateral pneumothoraces, as well as the presence of numerous gold threads embedded subcutaneously. An autop

Low-frequency electroacupuncture suppresses focal epilepsy and improves epilepsy-induced sleep disruptions.

BACKGROUND: The positive effects of acupuncture at Feng-Chi acupoints on treating epilepsy and insomnia have been well-documented in ancient Chinese literature. However, there is a lack of scientific evidence to elucidate the underlying mechanisms behind these effects. Our previous study demonstrated that high-frequency (100 Hz) electroacupuncture (EA) at Feng-Chi acupoints deteriorates both pilocarpine-induced focal epilepsy and sleep disruptions. This study investigated the effects of low-frequency (10 Hz) EA on epileptic activities and epilepsy-induced sleep disruptions. RESULTS: In rats,

Electroacupuncture suppresses capsaicin-induced secondary hyperalgesia through an endogenous spinal opioid mechanism.

Central sensitization, caused either by tissue inflammation or peripheral nerve injury, plays an important role in persistent pain. An animal model of capsaicin-induced pain has well-defined peripheral and central sensitization components, thus is useful for studying the analgesic effect on two separate components. The focus of this study is to examine the analgesic effects of electroacupuncture (EA) on capsaicin-induced secondary hyperalgesia, which represents central sensitization. Capsaicin (0.1%, 20 microl) was injected into the plantar side of the left hind paw, and foot withdrawal thresh

Electroacupuncture ameliorates ulcerative colitis by suppressing ferroptosis via the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: As an important component of external therapies in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the specific mechanism of acupuncture in improving UC has not been fully elucidated. This study investigates the regulatory effects of acupuncture on ferroptosis and the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway in colon epithelial cells of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced UC mice, thereby providing an in-depth exploration of the potential molecular mechanisms underlying acupuncture treatment for UC. METHODS: In the first phase, using a sham electroacupuncture (SEA) group as a control, the effects of ele

Electroacupuncture Attenuates Cyclophosphamide-Induced Bladder Pain by Restoring Autophagy in Spinal Inhibitory Interneurons.

Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome is characterized by chronic pelvic pain and urinary symptoms. Autophagy and oxidative stress are essential to neuronal homeostasis, and their dysregulation in spinal circuits may contribute to persistent pain. While electroacupuncture (EA) has been reported to alleviate cystitis-related pain, the associated cellular changes in the spinal dorsal horn remain incompletely understood. In this study, we used the cyclophosphamide (CYP)-induced cystitis rat model to investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the analgesic effects of EA. Be

Electroacupuncture Protects Against Post-MI Heart Failure Through Autonomic Regulation and α7nAChR Activation.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated whether electroacupuncture (EA) at Neiguan (PC6) acupoint alleviates adverse myocardial remodeling in post-myocardial infarction (MI) heart failure (HF) by activating the vagus nerve-mediated cholinergic pathway and its downstream α7nAChR-Akt-HIF-1α-VEGF signaling cascade. METHODS: Male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were randomized into sham, MI model, and EA groups (n = 6 per group). MI was induced by ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery. EA was applied at PC6 for 14 days starting 1 week after MI induction. Cardiac function and structure were

Electroacupuncture frequency for chemotherapy-induced neuropathy in breast cancer: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a prevalent dose-limiting toxicity in breast cancer patients. Electroacupuncture (EA) shows promise but optimal stimulation parameters remain undefined. We conducted a randomized trial comparing EA frequencies for CIPN. METHODS: This single-center, single-blind trial randomized patients to 2, 100, and 2/100 Hz EA, or mecobalamin (Mecbl). The primary outcome was the patient neurotoxicity questionnaire (PNQ) response rate at Week 4. Secondary outcomes included PNQ scores, National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for A

Laser Acupuncture Versus Electroacupuncture for Nonsevere Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Electroacupuncture (EA) is commonly employed for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), whereas laser acupuncture (LA) seems to offer a safer and more convenient alternative. Nevertheless, transitioning from EA to LA requires evidence. This study aims to compare their clinical efficacy and safety. METHODS: A randomized single-blind controlled trial was conducted on 76 CTS patients, with 38 patients assigned to receive EA (EA group) and 38 assigned to receive LA (LA group). Acupoints selected for both groups included PC4, PC6, PC7, PC8, LI4, LI10, LI11, HT3, HT7, and LU10. The intervention

Corticostriatal glutamate-mediated dynamic therapeutic efficacy of electroacupuncture in a parkinsonian rat model.

BACKGROUND: Motor impairments are the defining cardinal features of Parkinson's disease (PD), resulting from malfunction of the cortico-basal ganglia circuit. Clinical data have demonstrated that electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation may benefit motor symptoms in PD without adverse effects. However, the specific effects of EA on PD and the underlying mechanisms remain largely unclear. METHODS: This study investigated the effects of EA stimulation during and after 100 Hz application in a rat model of PD created by unilateral injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA). To establish optimal treatment
