Cold executive function processes and their hot analogs in schizotypy.

OBJECTIVE: To examine cold (based on logical reasoning) versus hot (having emotional components) executive function processes in groups with high individual schizotypal traits. METHOD: Two-hundred and forty-seven participants were administered the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire and were allocated into schizotypal (cognitive-perceptual, paranoid, negative, disorganized) or control groups according to pre-specified criteria. Participants were also administered a battery of tasks examining working memory, complex selective attention, response inhibition, decision-making and fluid intellig

The role of emotion in clinical decision making: an integrative literature review.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, clinical decision making has been perceived as a purely rational and cognitive process. Recently, a number of authors have linked emotional intelligence (EI) to clinical decision making (CDM) and calls have been made for an increased focus on EI skills for clinicians. The objective of this integrative literature review was to identify and synthesise the empirical evidence for a role of emotion in CDM. METHODS: A systematic search of the bibliographic databases PubMed, PsychINFO, and CINAHL (EBSCO) was conducted to identify empirical studies of clinician populations.

The Emerging Role of Artificial Intelligence Tools for Outcome Measurement in Facial Reanimation Surgery: A Review.

Importance: Surgeons treating facial paralysis with reanimation surgery measure the outcomes of surgery and adjust treatment to each patient's needs. Our objective is to review the current subjective facial paralysis assessment tools and the emerging computer-based objective analysis, which may involve artificial intelligence. Observations: In recent years, many new automated approaches to outcome measurement in facial reanimation surgery have been developed. Most of these tools utilize artificial intelligence to analyze emotional expression and symmetry of facial landmarks. Other tools have p

Predicting emotion perception abilities for cochlear implant users.

OBJECTIVE: In daily life, failure to perceive emotional expressions can result in maladjusted behaviour. For cochlear implant users, perceiving emotional cues in sounds remains challenging, and the factors explaining the variability in patients' sensitivity to emotions are currently poorly understood. Understanding how these factors relate to auditory proficiency is a major challenge of cochlear implant research and is critical in addressing patients' limitations. DESIGN: To fill this gap, we evaluated different auditory perception aspects in implant users (pitch discrimination, music process

A discordant monozygotic-twin approach to potential risk factors for chronic widespread pain in females.

Chronic widespread pain (CWP) is a common disorder affecting up to 15% of the general population. The objective of the present study was to explore the role of previously reported psychosocial and interpersonal risk factors on variation in CWP by investigating CWP discordant monozygotic (MZ) twins. This approach allows separation of cause and effect relationships, albeit imperfectly, as well the control for critical confounding variables such as common environment or genetics. In a total sample of N = 3,266 female twins aged 18-89 years, MZ (113 full pairs) and DZ twins (180 full pairs) discor

The differential influences of parenting and child narrative coherence on the development of emotion recognition.

The ability to recognize and label emotions serves as a building block by which children make sense of the world and learn how to interact with social partners. However, the timing and salience of influences on emotion recognition development are not fully understood. Path analyses evaluated the contributions of parenting and child narrative coherence to the development of emotion recognition across ages 4 through 8 in a diverse (50% female; 46% Hispanic, 18.4% Black, 11.2% White, .4% Asian, 24.0% multiracial) longitudinally followed sample of 250 caregiver-child dyads. Alexithymia in nurses: a context-specific concept analysis using rodgers's evolutionary methodology.

BACKGROUND: Alexithymia, a personality construct characterized by difficulties in identifying and describing emotions, as well as a tendency toward externally-oriented thinking, has significant implications for psychological well-being and interpersonal functioning. In the nursing profession, where emotional awareness and communication are essential, alexithymic traits may contribute to psychological distress and compromised patient interactions. However, its contextual manifestations and professional relevance within nursing remain insufficiently clarified. Rather than treating alexithymia in

Principles of Leadership.

Leadership matters because leadership crafts cultures, and culture drives organizational performance. Because health care faces the formidable challenges of providing the highest quality and safety, doing so affordably, and making health care widely accessible, outstanding leadership in health care is especially important. Yet, developing leadership attributes, which differ markedly from clinical and/or scientific skills, is not a usual part of medical or scientific training. This article reviews the rationale for developing great leaders in medicine and then presents the attributes of great l

Alexithymia and somatization in agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Deficient communication between the cerebral hemispheres is one of several prevailing neurobiological explanations for alexithymia and has been strongly supported by research on patients with commissurotomy. We examined self-reported symptoms of alexithymia in adults with agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC), a condition characterized by more subtle reductions in interhemispheric transfer than in commissurotomy. Sixteen adults with AgCC and full-scale intelligence quotient >80 were compared with 15 neurotypical controls group-matched for age and intelligence score. The AgCC group endorsed gr

Real-Time Intelligent Coaching Versus Human Expert Instruction in Surgical Skills Training: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Real-time intelligent coaching systems are technology-based surgical training tools that provide automated, real-time, and objective feedback on learners' performance during simulated surgical tasks. Unlike human expert instruction, which relies on instructor-delivered guidance and feedback, these systems use automated performance monitoring to provide immediate feedback on aspects such as accuracy, motion economy, and errors. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the effectiveness of real-time intelligent coaching systems compared with human expert training in surgical skill i
