Fish oil lipid emulsion compared with soybean oil lipid emulsion in pediatric patients with parenteral nutrition-associated cholestasis: A cost-effectiveness study.

OBJECTIVES: Evidence indicates that, in pediatric patients with parenteral nutrition-associated cholestasis (PNAC), the use of a 100% fish oil lipid emulsion (FOLE) increased the likelihood of PNAC resolution and reduced the likelihood of liver transplantation compared with a 100% soybean oil lipid emulsion (SOLE). To evaluate the potential economic benefit, we conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis comparing FOLE with SOLE. STUDY DESIGN: A discrete event simulation model evaluated cost-effectiveness by simulating clinical outcomes and estimating associated healthcare costs in pediatric pati

Unveiling the fate of lipid crystalline structures in engineered emulsions during in vitro digestion.

This study investigates how lipid crystalline structures in emulsions evolve during digestion, aiming to inform functional food design and potentially modulate lipid digestion. Using synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction, we monitored real-time structural transformations of lipids during in vitro digestion of 16 emulsions with varied lipid phases and emulsifiers, revealing rapid, composition-dependent transformations. These changes include lamellar packing changes and the emergence of different polymorphic forms originating from digestion products, as early as the first two minutes of lipolysis.

Nanoparticle-stabilized water-in-water emulsions: A critical review of formation, stabilization, and applications.

Water-in-water (W/W) emulsions are unique colloidal systems composed of two immiscible aqueous phases, featuring ultra-low interfacial tension, mild preparation conditions, and excellent biocompatibility. Owing to their distinctive interfacial properties and non-toxic aqueous environment, W/W emulsions have attracted extensive attention across colloid and interface science, food science, biomedicine, and pharmaceutical engineering, and have gradually become a hot research topic in interdisciplinary fields. In particular, recent advances have highlighted the importance of nanoparticle-stabilize

Oil-Based Phase Change Emulsions Endowed with High Thermal Conductivity and Responsive Rheological Behavior.

To overcome the low thermal conductivity and flow channel clogging inherent in traditional phase change materials (PCMs) for immersion cooling, this study develops a novel oil-based phase change emulsion (PCE) integrating high thermal transport with adaptive rheological behavior. A liquid thermal conductivity enhancer was synthesized by modifying epoxidized soybean oil with LiTFSI and blending it with a synthetic ester to form a dielectric base fluid. A mid-to-low-temperature PCM (Span65) was then incorporated via surfactant-free ultrasonic emulsification. The resulting PCE exhibits a tunable

From cavitation to carrier: Ultrasound-assisted starch-hydrocolloid Pickering emulsions for potential drug delivery.

Starch and Pickering emulsions consisting of the starch-hydrocolloid complex without surfactants have been found to be carriers for poorly water-soluble drugs and labile bioactive compounds. Acoustic cavitation caused by HIU may represent a possible sustainable technique for starch modification and formation of emulsions. Cavitation-induced mechanisms include the weakening of hydrogen bonds, chain breaking, decreased crystallinity, surface erosion, pore formation, the reduction of particle size and its surface charge, leading to improved interfacial activity of the starch stabilisers. High-performance emulsions via phosphorylated HDL/phosvitin interface engineering: Characterization, stability, and curcumin protection.

Egg yolk proteins have garnered significant attention from researchers due to their outstanding functional properties, and physical modification methods serve as a key approach to enhancing the characteristics of these proteins. In this study, phosphorylated egg yolk high-density lipoprotein (HDL) was prepared using sodium tripolyphosphate (STP) to investigate the properties of the high-internal-phase emulsion formed after cross-linking with phosvitin (Pv), as well as its protective effect on curcumin. Phosphorylation significantly enhanced the functional properties of HDL, with the 6% STP tre

Zein/ferulic acid/sodium alginate ternary nanoparticles: characterization and application in stable Pickering emulsions.

In this study, zein/ferulic acid nanoparticles (ZFs) and zein/ferulic acid/sodium alginate nanoparticles (ZFSs) were prepared using the anti-solvent method and employed to stabilize Pickering emulsions. Compared with ZFs, ZFSs exhibited better performance. Specifically, although the particle size increased from 186.4 nm to 202.9 nm, the polydispersity index decreased from 0.27 to 0.19. The zeta potential shifted from +30.88 mV to -46.01 mV, and the denaturation peak temperature increased from 101.0 °C to 135.0 °C. Furthermore, FTIR analysis suggested the presence of hydrogen bonds, electrostat

Spontaneous formation of protein microcapsules using water-in-water emulsions stabilized by protein microgels.

Protein microgels tend to adsorb at the surface of dispersed droplets in water-in-water (W/W) emulsions. It was hypothesized that suspensions of stable protein microcapsules (MC) can be produced by spontaneous crosslinking of the microgels at the interface in a process akin so-called cold gelation. Rapeseed or whey protein microgels added to W/W emulsions formed by mixing polyethylene oxide (PEO) and Dextran (DEX) adsorbed at the W/W interface. The rapeseed protein microgels were found to spontaneously crosslink and formed MC suspensions that were stable to dilution and washing. The size of th

Complex Coacervate Emulsions as a Strategy to Stabilize Enzymes for Catalysis in Organic Solvents.

Complex coacervates have emerged as versatile platforms for protein encapsulation, enabling enzymatic catalysis in aqueous environments. Despite their potential, applications of coacervates are limited by the substrate solubility in water. In this study, we present a protocol to stabilize enzyme-loaded coacervate droplets in water-immiscible organic solvents via the formation of highly stable emulsions. These emulsions were formed using coacervates composed of poly(diallyldimethylammonium hydroxide) and poly(acrylic acid), stabilized by a polystyrene-based, amphiphilic, anionic copolymer in to

Characteristics and stabilization of Pickering emulsions constructed using myosin from bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis).

Myosin from bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis) as a main type of fish protein possesses a good emulsifying ability. However, whether bighead carp myosin (BCM) could construct stable Pickering emulsions is still unclear. Therefore, myosin particles and Pickering emulsions stabilized by bighead carp myosin (BCMPEs) were analyzed. The surface structure of BCM particles at 0.6 mol/L NaCl treatment was uniform and compact with a contact angle of 86.4 ± 2.7°, exhibiting the potential ability to construct O/W Pickering emulsions. The size and flocculation index (FI) of BCMPEs decreased with the incr

Effect of Nonprotein Components for Lipid Oxidation in Emulsions Stabilized by Plant Protein Extracts.

Plant protein ingredients are rich in non-protein components of which the antioxidant and pro-oxidant effects are expected to be considerable. In this paper, commercial soy and pea protein isolates and concentrates were selected by using their soluble fractions to prepare oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. Emulsions stabilized with soy protein isolates were more prone to lipid oxidation than those with soy protein concentrate or pea protein isolate. Compositional analysis revealed that the soluble fraction of soy protein isolates contained higher concentrations of phenolic compounds and metals (iro

Xanthan gum/oil body-microgel emulsions with enhanced transdermal absorption for accelerating wound healing.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The oil body comprises lipid droplets surrounded by a surface embedded with oil body-related proteins. To form a drug delivery system, an oleosin can be fused with foreign proteins and bound to the oil body surface. Here, safflower oil bodies carrying oleosin-human epidermal growth factor (hEGF) were mixed with xanthan gum to form self-assembled polymers, referred as an oil body microgel emulsion (OBEME) without any chemical crosslinking agent. The physicochemical properties of OBEME were evaluated and compared with those of natural lipid droplets. The electrostatic interaction between xanthan

Partitioning of caffeine and quinine in oil-in-water emulsions and effects on bitterness.

The bulk vegetable oil-water partition coefficient of caffeine and quinine was determined by a shake-flask method as log Kow  = -1.32 and 2.97. These values were consistent with the effect of oil concentration on the distribution of the bitterants in an oil-in-water emulsion (0-2 and 0-20 wt% oil stabilized with 0.125 and 1 wt% whey protein isolate, respectively). For example, in a 20% o/w emulsion, approximately 90% of the total caffeine remained in the aqueous phase, whereas in a 2% o/w emulsion, only ∼20% of the quinine remained in the aqueous phase. The intensity of the bitter taste of caf

Curcumin, a potent therapeutic nutraceutical and its enhanced delivery and bioaccessibility by pickering emulsions.

Curcumin is a biomolecule with functional moieties, which contribute to its anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antioxidant properties. It has shown several therapeutic effects on treating inflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases and contributes to the reduction of oxidative stress and damage to body tissues. However, its low solubility and fast metabolism limit its absorption in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and lead to its low bioavailability. Preparation of Pickering emulsions stabilized with mineral or biopolymer-based nanoparticles can be an effective strategy for enhancing the stabil

Intravenous Lipid Emulsions in the Prevention and Treatment of Liver Disease in Intestinal Failure.

The development of intestinal failure-associated liver disease (IFALD) in pediatric and adult patients on parenteral nutrition is usually multifactorial in nature due to nutritional and non-nutritional causes. The role of lipid therapy as a contributing cause is well-established with the pathophysiological pathways now better understood. The review focuses on risk factors for IFALD development, biological effects of lipids, lipid emulsions and the mechanisms of lipid toxicity observed in laboratory animals followed by a synopsis of clinical studies in pediatric and adult patients. The introduc

Formulation of Tioconazole and Melaleuca alternifolia Essential Oil Pickering Emulsions for Onychomycosis Topical Treatment.

Onychomycosis is a disease that affects many adults, whose treatment includes both oral and topical therapies with low cure rates. The topical therapy is less effective but causes fewer side effects. This is why the development of an effective, easy to apply formulation for topical treatment is of high importance. We have used a nanotechnological approach to formulate Pickering emulsions (PEs) with well-defined properties to achieve site-specific delivery for antifungal drug combination of tioconazole and Melaleuca alternifolia essential oil. Silica nanoparticles with tailored size and partial

Role of lipid emulsions in cholestasis associated with long-term parenteral nutrition in children.

BACKGROUND: In children who depend on long-term parenteral nutrition (PN), liver disease is a major complication that may lead to end-stage liver failure requiring liver transplantation. METHODS: This retrospective study investigated the influence of lipid emulsions on cholestasis onset in children receiving long-term total parenteral nutrition (TPN) with lipids. Ten children who presented with a total of 23 episodes of cholestasis, associated in 13 cases with thrombocytopenia, were studied. RESULTS: Changes in the lipid delivery preceded these complications in more than half the cases. The

Mechanistic and comparative perspectives on ultrasonication-driven interfacial engineering in plant-based dairy emulsions.

Plant-based dairy alternatives (PBDAs) often struggle to achieve the colloidal stability, interfacial functionality, and sensory characteristics of bovine milk because of differences in protein structure, interfacial behavior, and matrix composition. Ultrasonication (US) has attracted increasing attention as a non-thermal processing technology capable of modifying protein conformation, droplet size, and interfacial organization through acoustic cavitation. This review critically examines the mechanistic basis of ultrasonication in PBDA emulsions, with particular emphasis on its influence on pr
