The antibiotic susceptibilities of 59 Enterobacter cloacae and 39 Klebsiella pneumoniae human oral isolates collected from a southern Chinese population in Hong Kong were investigated for their susceptibility to eight antibiotics: ampicillin, cephalothin, cefuroxime, ceftazidime, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, tetracycline and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole using the E-Test method for direct quantification of minimum inhibitory concentrations. Most strains were sensitive to all antibiotics except ampicillin and cephalothin. Ampicillin resistance was exhibited by 82% of K. pneumoniae and 69% of E. c

BACKGROUND: Mobile colistin resistance determinants (mcr) in ESBL-producing Enterobacterales represent a public health concern, given the renewed reliance on colistin as a last-resort agent for multidrug-resistant Gram-negative infections.
OBJECTIVES: To resolve the genetic context and transferability of colistin resistance in an ESBL-producing Enterobacter mori isolate (SH93I1) recovered from seafood (MIC of 8 mg/L).
METHODS: We characterized the location, genetic environment and mobility of the colistin resistance determinant in SH93I1 using hybrid whole-genome sequencing (short- and long-

The escalating global prevalence of antimicrobial resistance(AMR) represents a critical public health challenge, particularly concerning the compromised efficacy of polymyxins-essential therapeutic agents against carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative pathogens. This crisis is exacerbated by the plasmid-mediated horizontal gene transfer mechanism, which facilitates the inter-reservoir dissemination of resistance determinants across anthropogenic, zoogenic, and environmental microbiomes. This study investigated a multidrug-resistant Enterobacter hormaechei strain GS32 isolated from a deceased 180-d

The presence of macrolides in food and the environment poses a substantial threat to the sustainable development of natural ecosystems and presents risks to human health. Previous research has demonstrated that microbial esterases can degrade erythromycin (Ery), roxithromycin (Rox), and clarithromycin (Clr), rendering them candidates for bioremediation of macrolide residues. However, the efficacy of esterases is limited by insufficient thermal stability, restricting their widespread application. To address this challenge, this study employed a combinatorial strategy integrating computational m

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a promising tool with which to fight rising antibiotic resistance. However, pathogenic bacteria are equipped with several AMP defense mechanisms, whose contributions to AMP resistance are often poorly defined. Here, we evaluate the genetic determinants of resistance to an insect AMP, cecropin B, in the opportunistic pathogen Enterobacter cloacae. Single-cell analysis of E. cloacae's response to cecropin revealed marked heterogeneity in cell survival, phenotypically reminiscent of heteroresistance (the ability of a subpopulation to grow in the presence of supra

NDM-type metallo-β-lactamase (MBL)-producing Enterobacterales remain uncommon in the European region, especially among species other than Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli. The aim of this study was to describe epidemiological and molecular characteristics of a widespread NDM-1-producing Enterobacter cloacae complex outbreak in Greece. Over a 6-year period (March 2016-March 2022), a retrospective study was conducted in a tertiary care Greek hospital. Ninety single-patient carbapenem-non-susceptible E. cloacae complex clinical isolates were recovered consecutively. The isolates were su

Enterobacter cloacae complex (ECC), one of the most common opportunistic pathogens causing multiple infections in human, is resistant to β-lactam antibiotics mainly due to its highly expressed chromosomal AmpC β-lactamase. It seems that regulation of chromosomal AmpC β-lactamase is associated with peptidoglycan recycling. However, underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. In this study, we confirmed that NagZ, a glycoside hydrolase participating in peptidoglycan recycling in Gram-negative bacteria, plays a crucial role in developing resistance of E. cloacae (EC) to β-lactam antibiotic

OBJECTIVES: The draft genome sequences of two Enterobacter aerogenes strains (HN503E2II and PN108E5IIB) isolated from two Cameroonian abattoirs are reported.
METHODS: Bacterial genomic DNA of the two isolates was sequenced using an Illumina MiSeq platform. Generated reads were de novo assembled using CLC Genomics Workbench and SPAdes. The assembled contigs were annotated, and antibiotic resistance genes, virulence factors and plasmids were identified.
RESULTS: Whole-genome sequencing revealed that both strains were similar, with genomes of 4878638bp and 4794257bp, encoding several resistance

BACKGROUND: Following the association of Cronobacter spp. to several publicized fatal outbreaks in neonatal intensive care units of meningitis and necrotising enterocolitis, the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2004 requested the establishment of a molecular typing scheme to enable the international control of the organism. This paper presents the application of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) to Cronobacter which has led to the establishment of the Cronobacter PubMLST genome and sequence definition database (http://pubmlst.org/cronobacter/) containing over 1000 isolates with metadata along

A collection of seven multidrug-resistant clinical isolates of Enterobacter cloacae with reduced susceptibility to ceftazidime and cefepime recovered from 2009 to 2010 at the University Hospital of Mahdia, Tunisia, was analysed. PCR analysis and sequencing demonstrated that all study isolates harbored SHV-12 β-lactamase that was transferred by conjugation. Characterization of the regions surrounding the bla(SHV-12) showed that this gene was flanked by two IS26 elements. pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) revealed differents profiles indicating that the study isolates were not clonally rela

Newborns are rarely infected by extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing members of the Enterobacteriaceae. In a neonatal intensive care unit, 14 newborns were infected or colonized by CTX-M-15-producing Enterobacter cloacae. All seven infected patients had underlying medical conditions, and five of them were treated successfully with meropenem, whilst one untreated patient died. Paediatric infections caused by multidrug-resistant ESBL-producing Enterobacter cloacae constitute a critical clinical and epidemiological issue.

BACKGROUND: Simultaneous resistance to aminoglycosides and fluoroquinolones in carbapeneme non-susceptible (CNS) isolates will inevitably create problems. The present study was performed to characterize the prevalence of the plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance determinants (QRDs) and aminoglycoside resistance determinants (ARDs) among the CNS Enterobacter cloacae (E. cloacae) isolates in a Chinese teaching hospital, and to acquire their molecular epidemiological characteristics.
METHODS: The β-lactamases genes (including class A carbapenemase genes bla(KPC) and bla(SME), metallo-β-lactamase

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: In Enterobacter cloacae and Serratia marcescens, AmpC beta-lactamases can confer resistance to the third-generation cephalosporins and oxacephems, but not to the fourth-generation cephalosporins. Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) may confer resistance to all extended-spectrum cephalosporins but not flomoxef. As difficult to detect, the ESBL phenotype of the intrinsically AmpC- producing E. cloacae and S. marcescens is not routinely screened in the clinical microbiology laboratories. The distinct antibiotic resistance phenotype between ESBL- and AmpC-producers may ass

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Enterobacter cloacae has emerged as a serious public health threat, particularly in hospital settings, due to its ability to cause severe infections and rapidly acquire antibiotic resistance. The limited effectiveness of current antibiotics highlights the urgent need for alternative preventive strategies such as vaccination. In this study an immunoinformatics-based approach was employed to design a multi epitope vaccine (MEV) targeting the conserved and surface exposed outer membrane protein A (OmpA) of MDR E. cloacae. The entire proteome was screened to identify suit
