Infective endocarditis (IE) can be difficult to diagnose due to non-specific symptoms and the imperfect sensitivity of blood cultures and echocardiography. The interval between blood culture collection and the first detection of bacterial growth is known as time-to-positivity (TTP) and is considered a proxy for bacterial load. Several studies have demonstrated a shorter TTP in staphylococcal IE compared to staphylococcal bacteraemia of other sources; however, evidence in enterococcal IE is limited. We characterise the relationship between blood culture TTP and a diagnosis of Enterococcus faeca

The aim of this work was to provide a theoretical and scientific basis for the treatment, prevention, and control of clinical drug-resistant bacterial infections by studying the molecular epidemiology and horizontal transfer mechanism of optrA-carrying linezolid-resistant Enterococcus faecalis strains (LREfs) that were clinically isolated in a tertiary hospital in Kunming, China. Non-repetitive LREfs retained in a tertiary A hospital in Kunming, China. The strains were identified by Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). The transferability

BACKGROUND: Intravenous (IV) antibiotics have historically been considered standard of care for treatment of bloodstream infections (BSIs). Recent literature has shown sequential oral (PO) therapy to be noninferior to IV antibiotics for certain pathogens and disease states. However, a gap exists in the literature for BSI caused by Enterococcus faecalis.
OBJECTIVE: To compare outcomes of definitive sequential PO therapy to definitive IV therapy in patients with E faecalis BSI.
METHODS: Multicenter, retrospective, matched cohort study of adult patients with at least one blood culture positive

This study aimed to investigate whether penicillin-resistant, ampicillin-susceptible E. faecalis (PRASEF) isolates are disseminated in non-clinical sources, and to compare the molecular characteristics and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profile of clinical and non-clinical E. faecalis isolates. Non-clinical samples (n = 280) were collected and 101 E. faecalis isolates were recovered from food (n = 18), faeces of healthy animals (n = 24), water (n = 28) and sewage (n = 31). PRASEF (n = 68) and penicillin-susceptible, ampicillin-susceptible E. faecalis (n = 77) isolates of clinical origin were a

Infective endocarditis (IE) is an infection of the heart valves or endocardium, usually due to the spread of infection through the blood. It can cause a varied range of symptoms, from being asymptomatic to reduced heart function, valvular abnormalities, embolization, or death. Enterococci are usually present as normal gut flora but can also cause bacteremia, urinary tract infections, or IE, especially in the elderly population. The source of enterococcal spread in most of the cases is unidentifiable and sometimes associated with the genitourinary tract or damage to the gut mucosa due to trauma

Mostly Streptococcus bovis (S. bovis) bacteremia and endocarditis (60%) has been found to be associated with underlying colorectal cancer (CRC). Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) bacteremia and endocarditis has no identifiable source in most of the cases. E. faecalis is part of normal gut flora that can translocate through the intestine and cause the systemic infection. With any intestinal lesion or tumor, the barrier is breached and the gut flora like E. faecalis can translocate and cause infection. A 55-years-old male known to have non-ischemic cardiomyopathy with implantation of automated

Enterococcus faecalis and Candida albicans have been associated with cases of secondary and persistent root canal infections, been resistant to calcium hydroxide. So, the evaluation of the susceptibility of these microorganisms biofilms to new drugs is an important practice for establishing the best drug and consequently success of treatment. For this, in vitro biofilm formation of E. faecalis and C. albicans was induced separately on blocks obtained from bovine teeth. After the period of specimen incubation for biofilm maturation, the samples were immersed in the pastes: 1 - calcium hydroxide

Early identification of an outbreak is one of the main advantages of routine epidemiological surveillance. Enterococcus spp. used to be regarded as microorganisms of low pathogenicity, because they are part of the normal microbial flora of the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tract. Recently, they have emerged as important pathogenic agents, sometimes causing infections with high mortality rates. We studied a clustering of primary bloodstream infections caused by Enterococcus faecalis in a cardiology hospital neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Four cases of primary bloodstream infection by

Enterococcus faecalis 226, isolated from natural whey cultures utilized as starters in the manufacture of mozzarella cheese from water-buffalo milk, produces a bacteriocin designated enterocin 226NWC. The bacteriocin was isolated from culture supernatant fluids of the producer strain and was active against strains of the same species and Listeria monocytogenes, but not against useful lactic acid bacteria. Enterocin 226NWC is a protein with an apparent molecular weight of about 5800; it is relatively heat-stable and has a bactericidal mode of action. Listeria monocytogenes, growing in the prese

Enterococci are among the most common causes of nosocomial infections worldwide. Antimicrobial biocides are extensively used to control the growth of microorganisms on different surfaces. The purpose of this study was to determine the susceptibility of Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium isolates collected in Iran to biocide agents, formaldehyde (FOR), benzalkonium chloride (BZC), triclosan (TRE), and chlorhexidine digluconate (CHDG). Additionally, the frequency of biocide tolerance-associated (BTA) genes, qacA/B, qacED1, emeA, sigV and gasp65 were investigated. In this study, 222 i

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a rare but potentially fatal cause of feline arterial thromboembolism (ATE), most commonly affecting the mitral or aortic valves. Although Enterococcus faecalis is rarely reported in cats, it can induce severe endocardial infection and systemic embolic complications. This case report describes a one-year-old neutered male British Longhair cat that presented with acute hindlimb paralysis and dyspnoea lasting one day. The cat had a three-month history of lower urinary tract infection, but no known cardiac disease. On admission, all the classical signs of arterial o

Enterococcus faecalis infective endocarditis treatment with ampicillin plus ceftriaxone has not changed the mortality rates by over 30%. We identified borderline-penicillin-resistant, ampicillin-susceptible E. faecalis (borderline-PRASEF; penicillin MIC 4-8 µg/mL, breakpoint ≤8 µg/mL) isolates that have decreased ampicillin-ceftriaxone activity, which is present in 25% of isolates in New York City. Alternatively, ceftaroline is more active against E. faecalis than ceftriaxone. We compared the activity of ampicillin or penicillin plus ceftriaxone or ceftaroline against nine borderline-PRASEF an

In this case, an unusual presentation of Enterococcus faecalis (E.faecalis) endocarditis and clinical signs of wrist and forearm infection are reported. Before the patient was diagnosed with E.faecalis endocarditis, the patient managed to be treated with both prednisolone, various antibiotics, and colchicine on suspicion of gout, erysipelas, and deep tissue infection. Growth of E.faecalis in blood cultures raised the suspicion of endocarditis, and transesophageal echocardiography revealed vegetations on the aortic and the mitral valves with a perforation of the anterior mitral leaflet. UNLABELLED: Enterococcus faecalis is the leading Gram-positive bacterial species implicated in urinary tract infection (UTI). An opportunistic pathogen, E. faecalis is a commensal of the human gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and its presence in the GIT is a predisposing factor for UTI. The mechanisms by which E. faecalis colonizes and survives in the urinary tract (UT) are poorly understood, especially in uncomplicated or recurrent UTI. The UT is distinct from the GIT and is characterized by a sparse nutrient landscape and unique environmental stressors. In this study, we isolated and sequenced a

Quorum sensing inhibitor (QSI) has been attracting attention as anti-virulence agent which disarms pathogens of their virulence rather than killing them. QSI marking cyclic peptide-mediated QS in Gram-positive bacteria is an effective tool to overcome the crisis of antibiotic-dependent chemotherapy due to the emergence of drug resistance strain, e.g., methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Vancomycin resistant Enterococci (VRE). From a semi-large-scale screening thus far carried out, two Epoxide compounds, Ambuic acid and Synerazol, have been found to efficiently block agr and

BACKGROUND: Enterococcus faecalis is a significant cause of nosocomial infections and other diseases, including endocarditis, bacteremia, and urinary tract infections. This microorganism forms biofilms to overcome difficult environmental conditions, such as lack of oxygen, lack of water, and the presence of antimicrobials. These biofilms make diseases difficult by changing their proteome contents, protecting the bacterium, and increasing their pathogenicity. This study aimed to evaluate gentamicin's effect on proteome changes and biofilm formation in E. faecalis.

Enterococci, one of the most common causes of hospital-associated infections, are responsible for substantial morbidity and mortality. Enterococcus faecalis, the more common and virulent species, causes serious high-inoculum infections, namely infective endocarditis, that are associated with cardiac surgery and mortality rates that remained unchanged for the last 30 years. The best cures for these infections are observed with combination antibiotic therapy; however, optimal treatment has not been fully elucidated. It is the purpose of this review to highlight treatment options and their limita

This report describes the treatment of a 35-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with an empyema, and who had a long hospital course complicated by a catheter-related bloodstream infection and a history of intravenous drug use. Blood culture results confirmed Enterococcus faecalis. He was not a candidate for outpatient intravenous therapy and needed 14days of treatment, but was able to be discharged with a 3-day supply of oral levofloxacin to complete treatment for his empyema and 1 dose of dalbavancin at an outpatient infusion center to treat his bacteremia. The multiresistance gene cfr was identified for the first time in an Enterococcus faecalis isolate of animal origin. The 32,388-bp plasmid pEF-01, which carried the cfr gene, was sequenced completely. Three copies of the insertion sequence IS1216 were identified in pEF-01, and the detection of a cfr- and IS1216-containing amplicon by inverse PCR suggests that IS1216 may play a role in the dissemination of cfr by a recombination process.

Along with the increasing threat of nosocomial infections by vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis, bacteriophage (phage) therapy has been expected as an alternative therapy against infectious disease. Although genome information and proof of applicability are prerequisites for a modern therapeutic phage, E. faecalis phage has not been analyzed in terms of these aspects. Previously, we reported a novel virulent phage, phiEF24C, and its biology indicated its therapeutic potential against E. faecalis infection. In this study, the phiEF24C genome was analyzed and the in vivo therapeutic appl
