Integrated metabolome-SNP-gut microbiome analysis deciphers the molecular basis of EHP resistance in Penaeus vannamei.

Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP) has emerged as a highly virulent pathogen in shrimp aquaculture, yet the molecular determinants governing host resistance remain incompletely characterized. This study employed an integrated multi-omics strategy (metabolome, transcriptome, and microbiome) to elucidate the molecular basis of EHP resistance in Penaeus vannamei. Comparative metabolomic profiling of EHP-resistant (R4029) and susceptible (S4104) family lines identified 1614 metabolites, primarily organic acids (35.07 %) and lipids (21.56 %). Orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (O

Advances in Donkey Disease Surveillance and Microbiome Characterization in China.

This review article highlights the surveillance of bacterial, viral, and parasitic diseases in donkey populations in China. Key findings highlight significant threats from Equine herpesviruses (EHV-8 and EHV-1), which cause encephalitis, abortion, and respiratory distress. Several parasitic infections including Giardia duodenalis, Cryptosporidium spp., Enterocytozoon bieneusi, and Toxoplasma gondii present important zoonotic concerns across multiple regions of China. Additionally, this review synthesizes current knowledge on donkey microbiota across various body sites and examines their functi

Wild micromammal host spectrum of zoonotic eukaryotic parasites in Spain. Occurrence and genetic characterisation.

Micromammals have historically been recognized as highly contentious species in terms of the maintenance and transmission of zoonotic pathogens to humans. Limited information is currently available on the epidemiology and potential public health significance of intestinal eukaryotes in wild micromammals. We examined 490 faecal samples, grouped into 155 pools, obtained from 11 micromammal species captured in 11 Spanish provinces for the presence of DNA from Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, Enterocytozoon bieneusi and Blastocystis sp. The presence of Leishmania spp. was investigated in

The role of birds in dissemination of human waterborne enteropathogens.

Cryptosporidiosis, giardiasis and microsporidiosis are serious human diseases of waterborne origin; their etiologic agents and a substantial fecal coliform load can enter surface, drinking and recreational water resources from aquatic birds. The aim of this article is to present interactions between waterfowl and these waters that imply a negative public health impact, reinforcing the need for either better water-quality indicators or for water monitoring specifically for Cryptosporidium, Giardia and microsporidia. Where justifiable, the presence of waterfowl should be supported; however, mana

Association of Escherichia coli pathotypes with fecal markers of enteropathy and nutritional status among underweight adults in Bangladesh.

INTRODUCTION: Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED), a subclinical intestinal disorder, is characterized by chronic fecal-oral exposure to entero-pathogens and could be diagnosed by measuring non-invasive biomarkers. Escherichia coli is the one of the key bacterial enteric pathogens that drives EED, but there is a lack of information on the E. coli pathotypes in relation to the biomarkers of EED in malnourished adults. Here, we intended to measure the possible association of these pathotypes with EED biomarkers and nutritional status of adults residing in a slum in Bangladesh. METHOD: Fecal

A baseline epidemiological study of the co-infection of enteric protozoans with human immunodeficiency virus among men who have sex with men from Northeast China.

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and enteric parasite co-infection not only aggravates the clinical symptoms of parasites but also accelerates acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) progression. However, co-infection research on men who have sex with men (MSM), the predominant high-risk population of HIV/AIDS in China, is still limited. In this study, we investigated the epidemiology of enteric parasites, risk factors, and associations with clinical significance in an MSM HIV/AIDS population in Heilongjiang Province, northeast China. METHODS: We recruited 308 MSMs HIV/AIDS pa

[Microsporidioses].

Microsporidia are worldwide ubiquitous intracellular protozoan parasites infecting most major groups of the animal kingdom. In humans, microsporidiosis has recently emerged as a significant cause of morbidity in immunocompromised patients, and particularly in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Parasites of the genus Encephalitozoon cause keratoconjunctivitis and disseminated infections. In 15 to 30% of patients with advanced stage AIDS, Enterocytozoon bieneusi is the causative agent of major chronic diarrhoea. Clinical manifestations include numerous (2 to 8) and abundant

Diarrhoea outbreak caused by coinfections of Cryptosporidium parvum subtype IIdA20G1 and rotavirus in pre-weaned dairy calves.

Diarrhoea is one of the most important syndromes in neonatal calves. In industrialized nations with intensive animal farming, Cryptosporidium spp. and rotavirus are primary causes of calf diarrhoea, but the role of these and other enteric pathogens is not clear in China. In November and December 2018, a diarrhoea outbreak was identified in over 150 pre-weaned calves on a dairy farm in Heilongjiang Province, northeast China and approximately 60 calves died. To determine the cause of the outbreak, we analyzed 131 faecal samples collected from pre-weaned calves (0-2 months) during (n = 114) and a

Molecular characteristics and zoonotic potential of enteric protists in domestic dogs and cats in Egypt.

INTRODUCTION: Domestic dogs and cats can be a source of human infection by a wide diversity of zoonotic pathogens including parasites. Genotyping and subtyping tools are useful in assessing the true public health relevance of canine and feline infections by these pathogens. This study investigated the occurrence, genetic diversity, and zoonotic potential of common diarrhea-causing enteric protist parasites in household dogs and cats in Egypt, a country where this information is particularly scarce. METHODS: In this prospective, cross-sectional study a total of 352 individual fecal samples wer

Intestinal Coccidian Infections in Cancer Patients: A Case Series.

Introduction Coccidian protozoa and microsporidian fungi are opportunistic pathogens increasingly implicated in infections in immunosuppressed individuals. These parasites typically infect the intestinal epithelium, resulting in secretory diarrhea and malabsorption. The disease burden and timeline are both greater and longer among immunosuppressed patients. Therapeutic options for immunocompromised individuals are limited. As a result, we wanted to better characterize the disease course and treatment efficacy of these parasitic gastrointestinal infections. Methods We performed a single-center,

[Highly Active AntiRetroviral Therapy and opportunistic protozoan infections].

Opportunistic parasite infections (OPIs) are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in persons infected with HIV. In industrialised countries, the use of Highly Active AntiRetroviral Therapy (HAART) results to be effective in suppressing the HIV viral load, with a quantitative and qualitative improvement in the CD4+ T-cell count followed by a strong reduction of opportunistic infections including those caused by parasites. These successes have been mainly attributed to the reconstitution of the cell immunity, which play the most important role in controlling OPIs. However, there are man
