Installation of bicycle lanes and increased ridership in an urban, mixed-income setting in New Orleans, Louisiana.

BACKGROUND: People are more physically active in neighborhoods that are well designed for walking and bicycling. Building infrastructure for safer cycling is one way to promote physical activity. On-road bike lanes are one type of infrastructure hypothesized to positively impact levels of cycling. The first on-street bike lane was painted in New Orleans, LA during the spring of 2008. METHODS: In November of 2007 and again in November 2008, trained observers conducted manual counts of cyclists riding on St. Claude Avenue in New Orleans, LA. The data collected included the number of men, women,

Engaging physical activity policymakers.

Evidence for the health benefits of physical activity is overwhelming: physical activity is protective against type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, breast and colon cancer, stroke, osteoporosis, depression, falls in older adults, and many other adverse health outcomes. Research also suggests that widespread physical inactivity exacts a heavy toll on the US economy, as well as on individual health. Researchers have estimated that those who are physically inactive impose greater costs on society than do smokers or problem drinkers. Increasing rates of physical activity may therefore be one

"Walkable by Willpower": resident perceptions of neighbourhood environments.

Resident perceptions of neighbourhood walkability, physical activity opportunities, food choice and factors influencing choice of neighbourhood were examined through focus group discussion in higher and lower walkability neighbourhoods. Almost all participants perceived their neighbourhoods as very or reasonably walkable with high food choice. Walking was described as primarily leisure or exercise focused and less frequently as destination or task-oriented. Factors influencing walking and physical activity included connectivity, path quality, weather and traffic. The ability to drive easily wa

Investigate moped-car conflicts in China using a naturalistic driving study approach.

PROBLEM: Mopeds are a popular transportation mode in Europe and Asia. Moped-related traffic accidents account for a large proportion of crash fatalities. To develop moped-related crash countermeasures, it is important to understand the characteristics of moped-related conflicts. METHOD: Naturalistic driving study data were collected in Shanghai, China from 36 car drivers. The data included 2,878h and 78,296km driven from 13,149 trips. Moped-car conflicts were identified and examined from the passenger car driver's perspective using kinematic trigger algorithms and manual video reduction. RES

Reducing commercial fishing deck hazards with engineering solutions for winch design.

INTRODUCTION: The majority (67%) of hospitalized injuries among Alaska commercial fishermen are associated with deck machinery. This paper describes the "Prevention Through Design" process to mitigate one serious machinery entanglement hazard posed by a capstan deck winch. METHODS: After observing that the capstan winch provides no entanglement protection and the hydraulic controls are usually out of reach of the entangled person, NIOSH personnel met with fishermen and winch manufacturers to discuss various design solutions to mitigate these hazards. RESULTS: An emergency-stop ("e-stop") sys

Mixture effects of multiple exposures on driving safety at tunnel entrances and exits: A Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) method.

Tunnel entrances and exits are widely recognized as safety-critical zones due to abrupt environmental transitions. However, most prior work examines single domains (e.g., spatial or lighting) and often assumes linear, additive effects, leaving mixed, non-linear and interactive association patterns insufficiently understood. To address this gap, this study proposes a comprehensive framework that couples a continuous Driving Safety Margin Index (DSMI) with mixed-exposure modelling. A naturalistic driving experiment with 35 drivers collected synchronized spatial proximity to the portal (distance-

Statewide Assessment of Public Park Accessibility and Usability and Playground Safety.

Accessible and inclusive community environments support physical activity and health equity for people with disabilities, yet gaps in design, maintenance, and communication limit safe, independent use. This statewide cross-sectional audit assessed park accessibility and usability and playground safety in publicly accessible, non-fee-based Delaware community parks with playgrounds. Fifty stratified sites were evaluated using the Community Health Inclusion Index and the America's Playgrounds Safety Report Card by trained raters with strong interrater reliability. Descriptive analyses summarized

Assessing the restorative effects of campus greeness on student depression: a comparative study across three distinct university campus type in Macau.

This study addresses the growing mental health challenges among university students, with a particular focus on depression, by examining the role of campus greenness in mitigating its effects. In contrast to the majority of studies that concentrate on campus environments in Western countries, this research uniquely investigates how variations in campus density and form within the Chinese context influence the role of campus greenness in mitigating depression among university students. By analyzing three distinct types of university campuses in Macau, the study also reflects on the broader impl

Pedaling towards safer streets: evaluating the impact of cycling infrastructure on road safety.

Cycling provides health and environmental benefits but poses safety risks. Over the past decade, Canadian cities have expanded cycling infrastructure, such as cycle tracks (physically separated from motor vehicles) and painted lanes, to support safer active transportation. This study evaluates the impact of cycling infrastructure implemented in Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver. We used infrastructure data (2011-2022) from municipal reports, validated with street view imagery. The primary outcome was killed or seriously injured (KSI) victims per 10 km of road, based on police-reported data (2009

Urban green and blue spaces and general and mental health among older adults in Washington state: Analysis of BRFSS data between 2011-2019.

A growing body of evidence highlights the significant effect of built environment features on mental and general health. This study examined the association between distance to and percentage of green and blue space measures and serious psychological distress, general health, and frequent mental distress among older adults living in urban ZIP codes in Washington state. Percentage of green space, particularly tree canopy and forest space, was significantly associated with better self-rated general health and reduced odds of serious psychological distress. Closer distance to blue space was assoc

Effect of laminar air flow and building construction on aspergillosis in acute leukemia patients: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The preventive effect of laminar air flow (LAF) on aspergillosis has been observed in patients with hematological malignancies. However, the short follow-up period limits the interpretation of study results. METHODS: To assess the preventive effect of long-term LAF use on aspergillosis in its long-term use, we retrospectively analyzed 124 acute leukemia patients at our hospital between January 2005 and March 2016. We compared the incidence of aspergillosis before (May 2008) and during the construction of a new building (June 2008-January 2010) and in the early (February 2010-March

An analysis of cyclists' speed at combined pedestrian and cycle paths.

Objective: In Sweden, cyclists, pedestrians, and moped riders share the space on combined pedestrian and cycle paths, and their speeds may differ greatly. Both actual speed and speed differences can potentially influence the number of accidents on the shared paths. As a starting point, this article studies the speed component and how cyclists' speed varies at pedestrian and cycle paths depending on the day, week, and year; road user composition; and road design. Methods: Three data sources were used: Existing measurements of cycle speed and flow in 3 different Swedish municipalities, Eskilstuna

Modeling aggressive driver behavior at unsignalized intersections.

The processing of vehicles at unsignalized intersections is a complex and highly interactive process, whereby each driver makes individual decisions about when, where, and how to complete the required maneuver, subject to his perceptions of distances, velocities, and own car's performance. Typically, the performance of priority-unsignalized intersections has been modeled with probabilistic approaches that consider the distribution of gaps in the major-traffic stream and their acceptance by the drivers of minor street vehicles based on the driver's "critical gap". This paper investigates the ag

Seasickness in totally-enclosed motor-propelled survival craft: remedial measures.

Totally-enclosed motor-propelled survival craft (TEMPSC) are used to evacuate the crews of mobile offshore drilling units in emergencies. The small size and flat bottom of the TEMPSC predispose most occupants to seasickness, even in relatively calm waters. This paper discusses efforts required to improve the well-being of occupants in terms of reducing seasickness, dehydration, hypothermia, anxiety, and the other factors that contribute to loss of comfort and the will to survive. Specific recommendations include the provision of climatic control to regulate temperature, remove odors and provid

Developing Problematic Performance Value Scores: Binding Routine Activity Performance, Environmental Barriers, and Health Conditions.

BACKGROUND: Community design features, such as sidewalks and street crossings, present significant challenges for individuals with disabilities, hindering their physical performance and social integration. However, limited research has been conducted on the application of Universal Design (UD) to address these challenges, particularly concerning specific demographic groups and population cohorts. Understanding the influence of environmental features on physical performance is crucial for developing inclusive solutions like UD, which can enhance usability and social integration across diverse p

Analyzing key determinants of pedestrian risky behaviors at urban signalized intersections: insights from Kolkata City, India.

Risky pedestrian behaviors, such as signal violations, crossing from undesignated points, walking on the main carriageway instead of footpaths, and waiting at undesignated locations for buses, contribute to a significant number of pedestrian-vehicular collisions at urban signalized junctions in Indian cities. Therefore, identifying the factors influencing risky pedestrian behavior is crucial in urban India. A total of 59,409 pedestrians' road-using behavior was analyzed using video surveillance, complemented by on-site questionnaire responses from 3840 pedestrians regarding their risk percepti

A participatory virtual audit of the built environment for age-friendliness.

BACKGROUND: Geospatial studies that consider the relationships between the built environment and health typically rely on researcher-led 'objective' measurement of geospatial attributes of the built environment. Some studies can fail to find expected associations between environments and health outcomes where the geospatial measures do not reflect the experiences or perceptions of people themselves. We took a participatory approach to work with older adults with a concern for falling to assess the built environment in order that we could understand how their assessments relate to researcher as
