Exploring context-specific perspectives: a qualitative study on building climate resilience health-care facilities in southeast Asia.

BACKGROUND: Although existing literature provides various tools, frameworks, and guidelines for building health-care facilities that can withstand the impacts of climate change, there is little research focused on the practical implementation of such strategies. This gap in the research is particularly noticeable when applying these guidelines to specific geographical and environmental contexts. We focus specifically on the southeast Asia region, a region that has been identified as one of the most susceptible to the effects of a changing climate. By offering practical, region-specific recomme

The use of race and ethnicity in air pollution epidemiology and methodological recommendations: A scoping review focusing on California.

Air pollution remains a significant global health risk, and exposure to air pollutants can lead to multiple health issues across the life course. Air pollution is also an environmental justice issue and plays a crucial role in health disparities across racial and ethnic groups, through both differential exposure and differential vulnerability. Historical patterns of discriminatory siting of emission sources have led to differential exposure to air pollution among racial and ethnic groups. Differential vulnerability, influenced by social factors and community composition, further exacerbates he

Evaporative coolers and wildfire smoke exposure: a climate justice issue in hot, dry regions.

Low-income families in dry regions, including in the Southwestern United States, frequently cool their homes with evaporative ("swamp") coolers (ECs). While inexpensive and energy efficient compared to central air conditioners, ECs pull unfiltered outdoor air into the home, creating a health hazard to occupants when wildfire smoke and heat events coincide. A community-engaged research project to reduce wildfire smoke in homes was conducted in California's San Joaquin Valley in homes of Spanish-speaking agricultural workers. A total of 88 study participants with ECs were asked about their level

Routine practice in staffed community accommodation (approved premises) in England and Wales: Quantitative benchmarking from the first year of a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: In England and Wales, 'approved premises' offer 24-hour staffed accommodation for high-risk offenders, most of whom are returning to the community from prison. With a move towards a standardised operating model, it is essential to be able to measure outcomes. AIMS: Our aim is to collate and evaluate 'benchmarks' for approved premises. METHODS: A cross-sectional, descriptive design was used to establish the impact of existing practice in all four approved premises in Wales. Data on well-being, life satisfaction, attitudes to violence and problem-solving abilities were recorded wit

Injury in the first year of life: risk factors and solutions for high-risk families.

BACKGROUND: Injury is one of the leading causes of death for infants younger than 1 year of age. We investigated potential contributing factors for injury among children born to high-risk families. METHODS: The Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study is a longitudinal cohort of approximately 5000 children from mostly unwed parents across the United States. Data from interviews with mothers conducted shortly after birth and follow-up surveys at 1 year were used for this analysis. Injuries sustained in the first year of life that required medical attention were studied. Multivariate regressi

Beyond Principlism: A Cosmopolitan and Care Ethics Approach to One Digital Health.

This article examines the limitations of principlism in addressing the ethical challenges posed by One Digital Health. While principlism remains influential in bioethics, digital health, and global health policy, we argue that it is insufficient to capture the relational, data infrastructural, and multispecies dynamics shaping the threats to One Health. Using antimicrobial resistance as a paradigmatic case, we show that One Digital Health governance is shaped not only by distributive ethical concerns but also by structural asymmetries in data visibility, digital infrastructure, and epistemic i

"… Infections are not confined in labs…": Community engagement for Controlled Human Infection Studies: Opinions of researchers, bioethicists and research regulators in Uganda.

Controlled human infection studies play a critical role in advancing our knowledge of infectious diseases and developing therapeutics. However, these studies involve knowingly exposing research participants to pathogens, raising significant ethical, social, environmental and logistical concerns. Controlled human infection studies are being conducted in settings where individuals are economically disadvantaged and may have limited access to healthcare, education, and basic social amenities, making community engagement a central element in ensuring the ethical conduct of controlled human infecti

Exploring inequality through the lens of adolescents: a photovoice study in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau.

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic determinants of health are well-documented, yet adolescents' perspectives are often under-represented. The study aimed to engage adolescents in a low-income sub-Saharan setting to explore their daily experiences and analyse their perceptions of inequality within their local environment. METHODS: A photovoice project was conducted from January to March 2024 with six adolescents aged 16-19 years in Bissau, the capital of Guinea-Bissau. Participants used disposable cameras to capture up to 15 photos each, representing daily inequalities and documented reflections throug

Correlated Subjects: Relational Ethics and Veterinary Legal Accountability in Animal-Assisted Interventions.

The ethical and legal governance of Animal-Assisted Interventions (AAIs) remains conceptually and normatively fragmented. Although animals engaged in therapeutic, educational, and assistive activities make valuable contributions to human well-being, they continue to be defined by law as property or welfare objects, despite their meaningful yet limited forms of relational participation within structured human-controlled environments. This perspective obscures their context-dependent responsiveness and their institutional embeddedness. The present paper addresses this gap by adopting a normative

Casting a Health Equity Lens on Endocrinology and Diabetes.

As endocrinologists we have focused on biological contributors to disparities in diabetes, obesity and other endocrine disorders. Given that diabetes is an exemplar health disparity condition, we, as a specialty, are also positioned to view the contributing factors and solutions more broadly. This will give us agency in contributing to health system, public health, and policy-level interventions to address the structural and institutional racism embedded in our medical and social systems. A history of unconsented medical and research experimentation on vulnerable groups and perpetuation of eug

Convergences and divergences in nursing ethics across the European Union: A qualitative comparative analysis of national codes.

BACKGROUND: Nursing ethics guides practice, but European Union national codes were developed in diverse socio-legal contexts, generating heterogeneous emphases. PURPOSE: To compare European Union nursing codes of ethics, mapping convergences, divergences, and emerging ethical dimensions. METHODS: Qualitative documentary analysis with thematic content analysis examined 22 European Union member-state codes plus the European Nursing Council and International Council of Nurses (ICN) codes, with input from nursing, qualitative, and health-law experts. DISCUSSION: Fourteen themes were identified:

Spatial associations between socioeconomic groups and NO2 air pollution exposure within three large Canadian cities.

Previous studies of environmental justice in Canadian cities have linked lower socioeconomic status to greater air pollution exposures at coarse geographic scales, (i.e., Census Tracts). However, studies that examine these associations at finer scales are less common, as are comparisons among cities. To assess differences in exposure to air pollution among socioeconomic groups, we assigned estimates of exposure to ambient nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a marker for traffic-related pollution, from city-wide land use regression models to respondents of the 2006 Canadian census long-form questionnaire i

The contributing factors to suicide in Italian prisons: An 11-year analysis (2010-2020).

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a leading cause of death globally, with approximately 800,000 deaths annually and accounting for 1.5% of all deaths. Risk factors are multifaceted, encompassing individual factors (such as genetics, family history and mental illnesses) and environmental factors (such as economic conditions, social support and life events). In prisons, suicide rates are markedly higher than in the general population, particularly in Italy, where the prisoner suicide rate is approximately 20 times that of the non-incarcerated population. There is, however, little research on suicide in Ita

Unraveling health disparities across cause-specific outcomes associated with emerging air pollutants: Evidence on black carbon and ultrafine particles in Buffalo, New York.

Black carbon (BC) and ultrafine particles (UFPs) are combustion-related air pollutants that remain largely unregulated despite growing evidence of adverse health effects. Few studies have evaluated their short-term health effects on wide spectrum of disease morbidity in U.S. cities or examined disparities across communities. Using a time-stratified case-crossover design, we examined associations of BC and UFPs exposures with cause-specific hospital admissions (HAs) and emergency department (ED) visits in Buffalo, New York. Higher BC and UFP exposures were associated with increased HAs across m

Conduct disorder with limited prosocial emotions: a multimethod study in criminal justice-involved boys.

BACKGROUND: More than 10 years after its introduction in DSM-5, support for the 'limited prosocial emotions' specifier (LPE) for the diagnosis of conduct disorder (CD) remains scarce, possibly because studies failed to comprehensively assess the specifier and to include important characteristics. This study was designed to tackle both major limitations. METHODS: In a sample of 323 criminal justice-involved male adolescents (ages 16-17 years), diagnostic interviews were used to differentiate between males who meet criteria for both CD and the DSM-5 specifier (CD + LPE) and males who only meet

Advancing Research and Practice in People, Health, and Place in Brazil: Using Community-Based System Dynamics to Identify Physical Activity Research Priorities.

BACKGROUND: Brazil has made significant strides in promoting physical activity through research, policy, and large-scale programs. However, physical inactivity persists as a major risk factor for noncommunicable diseases, disproportionately affecting women, older adults, and low-income populations. Addressing this issue requires evidence-based approaches rooted in social justice, particularly within Brazil's complex social, economic, and spatial inequalities. METHODS: This study applied community-based system dynamics to engage health, urban planning, and social equity researchers to identify

Trend and inequality in livestock CO2 emission intensity: Evidence from 341 prefecture-level cities from 2006 to 2022 in China.

As global warming intensifies, the livestock sector-a major source of carbon emission in agriculture-has gained growing attention on fair and green mitigation. However, existing studies have rarely focused on the spatiotemporal evolution of CO2 emission intensity (CEI) and its inequality drivers. This study conducted a more detailed analysis at the prefecture-level city scale. Specifically, we estimated livestock CO2 emission (CE) across 341 prefecture-level cities in China from 2006 to 2022. Using the standard deviation ellipse and spatial autocorrelation models, we analyzed the spatiotempora

Unlocking Innovation in European Plant Breeding: A Perspective on the New Genomic Techniques Framework.

New genomic techniques (NGTs), including targeted mutagenesis and cisgenesis, can accelerate plant breeding and support the development of crops adapted to abiotic stresses associated with climate change and to biotic stresses such as pests and diseases, resource limitations and changing societal needs. Their application in the European Union has nevertheless been constrained by legislation adopted before these technologies became available, especially Directive 2001/18/EC, and by the regulatory gap following the 2018 decision on Case C-528/16 of the Court of Justice of the European Union. The Impact of Social Determinants on Posttraumatic Growth Among Young Adult Childhood Cancer Survivors.

BACKGROUND: Young adult childhood cancer survivors (YA CCSs) may experience posttraumatic growth (PTG), yet little is known about how neighborhood-level social determinants influence PTG. Posttraumatic stress may also shape PTG, but its mediating role in the relationship between neighborhood deprivation and PTG remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between neighborhood deprivation and PTG among YA CCSs and determine whether posttraumatic stress mediates these associations. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 121 YA CCSs. Neighborhood deprivation was measured using the
