OBJECTIVE: Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), a persistent environmental pollutant, is implicated in immune dysregulation. Rising inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) incidence parallels environmental contamination, yet PFOS's role in gut inflammation remains unclear. Its immunotoxicity may disrupt intestinal homeostasis via barrier dysfunction or cytokine imbalance, but molecular targets and pathways linking PFOS to IBD pathogenesis require elucidation to inform risk mitigation strategies.
METHODS: This study aims to elucidate the mechanism of action of PFOS in the development and progression

Escalating environmental pollution caused by persistent chemical contaminants demands the development of efficient and sustainable remediation solutions. Bioremediation offers a promising path, and whole-cell immobilization is a key strategy to enhance its performance by protecting microorganisms from harsh conditions and enabling their reuse. Among various carriers, alginate, a renewable biopolymer derived from seaweed, is an exceptional matrix due to its mild gelation, biocompatibility, and low cost. This review critically examines how the strategic engineering of alginate-based materials ov

Advances generated in medicine, science, and technology have contributed to a better quality of life in recent years; however, antimicrobial resistance has also benefited from these advances, creating various environmental and health problems. Several determinants may explain the problem of antimicrobial resistance, such as wastewater treatment plants that represent a powerful agent for the promotion of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARG), and are an important factor in mitigating the problem. This article focuses on reviewing current technologies for ARB

Recently, new findings in epigenetic science switched the focus from the observation of physiological intragenomic dynamics to the idea of an environmental co-construction of phenotypic expression. In psichodynamic field, objectual relations and attachement theoreticians emphasized the interpersonal dimension of individual development, focusing the attention on the relational matrix of self organization. The construction of stable affective-behavioral traits throughout different parenting styles has actually found a coincidence in ethological studies, which have explored the epigenetic process

The 2025-2026 conference season in respiratory and allergy medicine has surfaced signals that the field is shifting faster than many clinical systems can absorb. The agendas converge on themes that were peripheral a decade ago: precision phenotyping, remission as a treatment target, the united airway as a clinical organizing principle, metabolic-inflammatory crossover, and the environmental forces reshaping disease burden in real time. This article traces those signals through emerging conference data, updated guidelines from GINA and ARIA-EAACI, and the growing evidence that climate-driven po

Sharks, are highly vulnerable to fishing pressures, a key factor in their global population decline. Chemical pollution, however, especially metal and metalloid contamination, poses significant additional risks. Of around 520 shark species, about 170 are threatened, including the Sphyrna genus (hammerheads). This review examines contamination in these sharks and its ecological and human health implications. A scientometric review indicates limited research, mainly on juveniles and only mercury contamination, with scarce data on other metals, life stages, and consumption thresholds. The finding

As a result of the wide use of chromium (Cr) and its compounds as well as the exposure of the Cr-containing wastes, air, soil, water and food could be polluted by Cr in varying degrees. Cr is a toxic element that occurs in highly variable oxidation states. Accordingly, environmental chromium pollution, especially the soil contamination with Cr, has become one of the focuses of environmental science. In this review, the factors influencing the transport, transformation and the ecotoxicity of chromium were summarized, for example, soil properties (pH, Eh, organic matter, clay minerals), species

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a paramount global health threat. While antibiotic misuse is a recognized driver, other environmental pollutants, particularly non-biodegradable heavy metals, are increasingly implicated in the selection and dissemination of resistance through co-selection mechanisms. This systematic review synthesizes evidence on the role of environmental heavy metal contamination as a driver of AMR evolution and spread. A systematic search was conducted across seven databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane, Biomed Central, Google Scholar, and Embase) between Novem

INTRODUCTION: Environmental pollution poses increasing threats to public health, particularly in metabolic disorders. Steatotic liver disease (SLD) is characterized by metabolic dysfunctions of the liver and affects over one-third of the global population. However, whether exposure to environmental pollutants would increase the risk of SLD remains poorly understood.
AIM: To evaluate the association between exposure to environmental pollutants and the SLD risk.
METHODS: A systematic search of Medline, Embase, and Web of Science databases, along with manually reviewed reference lists, was cond

BACKGROUND: Stroke caregivers often experience significant physical and psychological burden during long-term caregiving, leading to reduced quality of life. Traditional unidimensional support models inadequately address their complex needs. Occupational therapy interventions based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), which integrate multidimensional support across body function, activity and participation, and environmental factors, may systematically alleviate caregiver burden. However, the efficacy and optimal intervention approaches lack comprehe

The increasing vector-borne disease (re)emergence and geographic expansion, driven by environmental change, has been accompanied by growing calls for integrated or One Health surveillance approaches across the human, animal, and environmental health sectors. However, despite widespread advocacy and policy implementation, assessment of the extent to which existing systems achieve cross-sectoral integration remains unclear. There also remains limited evidence regarding existing surveillance capacities and the priorities of key actors within the surveillance ecosystem for transitioning to effecti

Antibiotics have reduced disease burdens in humans and animals, but the development of resistant microbes in agricultural products poses a risk. The long-term impacts of antibiotics in agri-foods remain poorly understood, making it difficult to assess their risks to human and animal health. Current research suggests that most antibiotic contamination in the agri-food chain poses negligible risks, based on assessments of measured environmental concentrations (MECs), predicted environmental concentration (PEC)/predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC) ratios (MEC/PNEC < 0.1), toxic units (TU = ME

Neuroinflammation is a cause of neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorders, fetal alcohol syndrome, and cerebral palsy. Converging lines of evidence from basic and clinical sciences suggest that dysregulation of the epigenetic landscape, including DNA methylation and miRNA expression, is associated with neuroinflammation. Genetic and environmental factors can affect the interaction between epigenetics and neuroinflammation, which may cause neurodevelopmental disorders. In this minireview, we focus on neuroinflammation that might be mediated by epigenetic dysregulation in mi
