Escherichia coli strains causing avian colibacillosis and human neonatal meningitis, urinary tract infections, and septicemia are collectively known as extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC). Characterization of ExPEC strains using various typing techniques has shown that they harbor many similarities, despite their isolation from different host species, leading to the hypothesis that ExPEC may have zoonotic potential. The present study examined a subset of ExPEC strains: neonatal meningitis E. coli (NMEC) strains and avian-pathogenic E. coli (APEC) strains belonging to the O18 serogroup.

BACKGROUND: Hafnia alvei (H. alvei) is an opportunistic pathogen that rarely causes extraintestinal infections. Chorioamnionitis involving this bacterium, though uncommon, can be life-threatening and rapidly progress to maternal septic shock. However, in the setting of polymicrobial infection-particularly when co-existing with Escherichia coli, a well-recognized pathogen in obstetric sepsis-the severe clinical manifestations cannot be attributed solely to H. alvei.
CASE SUMMARY: We report a case of a 27-year-old primipara at 33 + 5 weeks of gestation presenting with low-grade fever, lower abd

Escherichia coli is one of the first commensal bacteria to colonize the chicken gut, where it predominates at an early stage of broiler chick life. Escherichia coli can potentially cause colibacillosis in chickens, spreading to extraintestinal systemic organs, which results in high economic losses in poultry industry, as well as a potential risk to public health. Many studies conducted to investigate the effectiveness of natural products as alternatives to antibiotics and to enhance the production performance in broiler chickens have assessed E. coli load in the chicken gut, but it is still un

Despite abundant literature on pathogenicity and virulence of the opportunistic pathogen Escherichia coli, much less is known about its ecological and evolutionary dynamics as a commensal. Based on two detailed longitudinal datasets on the gut microbiota of healthy adults followed for months to years in France and the USA, we identified a robust trade-off between the ability to establish in a new host (colonization) and to remain in the host (residence). Major E. coli lineages (phylogroups or subgroups) exhibited similar fitness but diverse strategies, from strong colonisers residing few days

Extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) form the most important resistance determinants prevalent worldwide. Data on ESBL-producing Escherichia coli from poultry and livestock are scarce in India. We present data on the functional and genomic characterization of ESBL-producing E. coli obtained from poultry in India. The whole genome sequences of 28 ESBL-producing E. coli were analyzed comprising of 12 broiler chicken E. coli isolates, 11 free-range chicken E. coli isolates, and 5 human extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli. All of the 28 ESBL-producing E. coli isolates were tested for antibiotic s

Irrigation water can serve as a reservoir and transmission route for pathogenic Escherichia coli, posing a threat to food safety and public health. This study builds upon a previous survey conducted in Hermosillo, Sonora (Mexico), where 445 samples were collected from a local Honeydew melon farm and associated packing facilities. Among the 32 E. coli strains recovered, two strains, A34 and A51, were isolated from irrigation water and selected for further molecular characterization by PCR, due to their high pathogenic potential. Both strains were identified as hybrid aEPEC/STEC pathotypes carry

Antimicrobial resistance is an ancient natural phenomenon increasingly pressured by anthropogenic activities. Escherichia coli has been used as markers of environmental contamination and human-related activity. Seabirds may be bioindicators of clinically relevant bacterial pathogens and their antimicrobial resistance genes, including extended-spectrum-beta-lactamase (ESBL) and/or plasmid-encoded AmpC (pAmpC), in anthropized and remote areas. We evaluated cloacal swabs of 20 wild magnificent frigatebirds (Fregata magnificens) of the Alcatrazes Archipelago, the biggest breeding colony of magnifi

BACKGROUND: Escherichia coli affects human health through intestinal and extraintestinal infections. Avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC) contributes to colibacillosis in poultry and can develop public health risks. Antibiotic resistance and biofilm-producer strains are challenges in infection control options.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize phenotypic and genotypic antibiotic resistance profiles as well as biofilm formation assay in E. coli isolates from clinical and poultry samples.
METHODS: In the study, 42 E. coli isolates were collected and confirmed from clinical and poultry sou

Clinical infections attributed to carbapenemase-producing bacteria are a pressing public health concern owing to limited therapeutic options and linked antimicrobial resistance. In recent years, studies have reported the emergence and spread of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae and their public health impact. This has been closely followed by the global dissemination of highly resistant and virulent zooanthroponotic extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) ST131 clones. It has also been hypothesized that companion animals may act as a reservoir for Gram-negative multidrug-r

Escherichia coli (E. coli) are widely related to pyometra and cystitis in dogs, and these infections can occur simultaneously. The goal of this study was to determine genetic and pathogenic insights of 14 E. coli isolated simultaneously from pyometra content and bladder urine of seven bitches. To achieve this, in silico and in vitro comparative analyses were conducted. Whole-genome comparisons demonstrated that E. coli isolated from pyometra and urine of the same animal were predominantly genetic extraintestinal E. coli clones belonging to the same Sequence Type and phylogroup. The E. coli clo

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a severe comorbidity of prematurity, is usually sporadic, but occasional outbreaks suggest an infectious cause. Escherichia coli , the most frequent Gram-negative pathogen in preterm infants, historically displays a low inhospital transmissibility.
AIM: To report the management of an NEC outbreak in a Belgian neonatal intensive care unit and the molecular characterization of a rare, highly virulent/resistant E. coli strain.
METHODS: Clinical data were extracted from electronic medical records. Surveillance and clinical isolates characterized using

Adherent and invasive mucosa-associated Escherichia coli have been implicated in the pathogenesis of colon cancer and inflammatory bowel diseases. It has been reported that such isolates share features of extraintestinal E. coli (ExPEC) and particularly uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC). We used suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) to subtract the genome of E. coli K-12 from that of a colon cancer mucosal E. coli isolate. Of the subtracted sequences, 53 % were present in the genomes of one or more of three sequenced UPEC strains but absent from the genome of an enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EH

Escherichia coli hemolysin has been implicated as a pathogenicity factor in extraintestinal E. coli infections including sepsis. In the present study the effects of intravascular administration of hemolysin were investigated in isolated blood-free perfused rabbit lungs. Low concentrations of the toxin in the perfusate (0.05-5 hemolytic units/ml, corresponding to approximately 5-500 ng/ml), caused a dose- and time-dependent release of potassium, thromboxane A2, and prostaglandin I2, but not of lactate dehydrogenase, into the recirculating medium, as well as a dose-dependent liberation of the pr

Appropriate interpretation of environmental signals facilitates niche specificity in pathogenic bacteria. However, the responses of niche-specific pathogens to common host signals are poorly understood. d-Serine (d-ser) is a toxic metabolite present in highly variable concentrations at different colonization sites within the human host that we previously found is capable of inducing changes in gene expression. In this study, we made the striking observation that the global transcriptional response of three Escherichia coli pathotypes - enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), uropathogenic E. coli (

Escherichia coli ST131 is one of the high-risk multidrug-resistant clones with a global distribution and the ability to persist and colonize in a variety of niches. Carbapenemase-producing E. coli ST131 strains with the ability to resist last-line antibiotics (i.e., colistin) have been recently considered a significant public health. Colistin is widely used in veterinary medicine and therefore, colistin-resistant bacteria can be transmitted from livestock to humans through food. There are several mechanisms of resistance to colistin, which include chromosomal mutations and plasmid-transmitted

Some strains of Escherichia coli are known to be involved in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer (CRC). The aim of current study was to compare the general characteristics of the E. coli from CRC patients and healthy participants. A total of 96 biopsy samples from 48 CRC patients and 48 healthy participants, were studied. The clonality of the E. coli isolates was analyzed by Enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus-based PCR (ERIC-PCR) method. The strains were tested by PCR to determine the prevalence of different virulence factors. According to the results of ERIC-PCR analysis, (from

The zoonotic potential of Escherichia coli from chicken-source food products is important to define for public health purposes. Previously, genotypic and phenotypic screening of E. coli isolates from commercial chicken meat and shell eggs identified some E. coli strains that by molecular criteria resembled human-source extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC). Here, to clarify the zoonotic risk of such chicken-source E. coli, we compared selected E. coli isolates from chicken meat and eggs, stratified by molecularly defined ExPEC status, to human-source ExPEC and to laboratory E. coli for vi

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) is an extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli that primarily causes avian colibacillosis, leading to localized or systemic infections. Its persistent survival within host macrophages is a critical component of the systemic infection process. In this process, outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) secreted by APEC play an important role; however, the interactions between OMVs and macrophages and their effects on bacterial intracellular survival remain unclear. This study demonstrated that APEC-derived OMVs induced intracellular Ca2+ release and reactive oxyg

Escherichia coli is not only a ubiquitous gut commensal but also an opportunistic pathogen responsible for severe intestinal and extraintestinal infections. Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) poses a notable public health threat, particularly in children, where infections can lead to bloody diarrhea and progress to hemolytic uremic syndrome, a life-threatening condition with long-term complications. Antibiotics are contraindicated in STEC infections because of their potential to induce prophages carrying Shiga toxin (stx) genes, triggering toxin production. Here, we developed a CRISPR-based

Clinical Enterobacteriaceae isolates that produce extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) have been increasingly reported at a global scale. However, comprehensive data on the molecular epidemiology of ESBL-producing strains are limited and few studies have been conducted in non-outbreak situations. We used whole-genome sequencing to describe the population structure of 294 ESBL-producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates that were recovered from a German community hospital throughout a 1 year sampling period in a non-outbreak situation. We found a high proportion of E. coli iso
