Novel Extended Tetraether Lipids Found in a High-CO2 Geyser.

The growing research into the archaeal lipidome has uncovered a remarkable structural diversity in isoprenoidal glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (iGDGTs) and revealed complex membrane adaptations, especially in extreme environments. We performed a comprehensive analysis of the lipidome from the subsurface aquifer of the CO2-rich, cold-water Geyser Andernach (Germany), using ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry. We detected iGDGT-0, presumably derived from the dominant community member Candidatus Altiarchaeum, providing supporting evidence for its ability to synthesise tetraethers, as p

Improved protocol for metabolite extraction and identification of respiratory quinones in extremophilic Archaea grown on mineral materials.

We investigated the metabolome of the iron- and sulfur-oxidizing, extremely thermoacidophilic archaeon Metallosphaera sedula grown on mineral pyrite (FeS2). The extraction of organic materials from these microorganisms is a major challenge because of the tight contact and interaction between cells and mineral materials. Therefore, we applied an improved protocol to break the microbial cells and separate their organic constituents from the mineral surface, to extract lipophilic compounds through liquid-liquid extraction, and performed metabolomics analyses using MALDI-TOF MS and UHPLC-UHR-Q/TOF

Nano-lignin@TA-AgNPs reinforced green adhesives: high-performance systems for harsh environments.

Green formaldehyde-free adhesives have gained attention for their eco-friendliness, though poor extreme-environment adaptability and inadequate underwater adhesion limit their practical application. This study presents a novel tannic acid‑silver nanoparticles (TA-AgNPs) in deep eutectic solvent (DES) for room-temperature autocatalytic polymerization of acrylic acid. By integrating nano-lignin (LNP) and TA-AgNPs, we constructed a dual dynamic enhancement structure through a catechol-quinone redox couple, enabling synergistic dynamic covalent/non-covalent bonding. The resulting green adhesive (T

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi: Boosting Crop Resilience to Environmental Stresses.

Amid escalating challenges from global climate change and increasing environmental degradation, agricultural systems worldwide face a multitude of abiotic stresses, including drought, salinity, elevated temperatures, heavy metal pollution, and flooding. These factors critically impair crop productivity and yield. Simultaneously, biotic pressures such as pathogen invasions intensify the vulnerability of agricultural outputs. At the heart of mitigating these challenges, Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AM fungi) form a crucial symbiotic relationship with most terrestrial plants, significantly enhan

Flying microbes-survival in the extreme conditions of the stratosphere during a stratospheric balloon flight experiment.

UNLABELLED: Earth's stratosphere is characterized by hypobaric conditions, low temperatures, and high intensities of ultraviolet (UV) and cosmic radiation as well as low water and nutrient availability. While it is not considered a permanent habitat for microorganisms, they can be transported to the stratosphere by storms, volcanic action, or human activity. The impact of those extreme conditions on microorganisms and their survival were tested by sending a sample gondola to the stratosphere. The sample gondola was built to allow exposure of Bacillus subtilis endospores at different angles to

Harnessing synthetic microbial communities for desert vegetation restoration.

The core bottleneck for desert vegetation restoration is extreme water stress during early seedling establishment, with hydraulic failure as the primary lethal mechanism. Traditional engineering measures (e.g., irrigation) and single-strain inoculation cannot adequately address these challenges due to high cost, weak sustainability, or limited functionality. Synthetic microbial communities (SynComs) offer a new approach to synergistically regulate plant water use and soil microenvironment by integrating functionally complementary taxa. This review discusses the soil water characteristics of de

Growing Fiber Sensors Enable Continuous In Vivo Monitoring of Plant Hormones.

Plant stress during growth, caused by extreme environments and biotic attacks, threatens global biodiversity and crop production, necessitating urgent elucidation of plant adaptation mechanisms. Endogenous hormones of plant growth serve as master regulators and earliest indicators of stress adaptation, making it crucial to monitor their dynamics continuously. However, existing methods, including chromatography and electrochemical probes, fail because of their mismatch with the irreversible and plastic nature of plant growth. Here, we unexpectedly find a growing fiber sensor based on an electro

Variations of Corticotropin-Releasing Factor Receptor 1α Contribute to the Blunted HPA Axis Responses to Hypoxia in Plateau Mammals.

Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) and its receptor (CRFR1) are critical components of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis. Ochotona curzoniae (O. curzoniae), Myospalax baileyi (M. baileyi), and Microtus oeconomus (M. oeconomus) have diversely evolved adaptive strategies to the extreme environment at high altitude. Here, we found blunted HPA axis responsiveness in native Tibetan mammals. CRF was 100% conserved, three amino-acid variations were in M. oeconomus-urocortin (UCN), and unique amino-acid variations in ligand-receptor binding domains of O. curzoniae-, M. baileyi-, a

Patterns of plastic occurrence during the pre- and post-Super Typhoon Rai (Odette) event in Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary (OIWS), Philippines.

Plastic waste is a growing global concern, with extreme weather events such as typhoons potentially exacerbating its transport to marine environments. The Philippines, experiencing an average of 20 typhoons annually, provides a critical case study. Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary (OIWS), a Ramsar site in Cebu, Philippines, was impacted by Super Typhoon Rai in 2021. Field sampling across five mangrove transects and satellite imagery (DeMPS) for four different periods showed an increase in macroplastics after the typhoon. Mean plastic loads over four sampling periods were 0.43 ± 0.88, 0.69 ± 1.

Construction of Hierarchical Micro/Nanostructured ZnO/Cu-ZnMOFs@SA Superhydrophobic Composite Coatings with Excellent Multifunctionality of Anticorrosion, Blood-Repelling, and Antimicrobial Properties.

Naked medical devices are often damaged by blood, bacteria, and other extreme environmental conditions (heat, humidity, acid, alkali, salts, and others), causing device failure and increasing difficulty for the operator. They can also cause inflammation and coagulation resulting in severe complications and even death. In this work, the superhydrophobic ZnO/copper-zinc metal-organic frameworks@stearic acid (ZnO/Cu-ZnMOFs@SA) composite coatings with hierarchical micro/nanostructures were fabricated on Zn substrates via a one-step hydrothermal method. The effects of hierarchical micro/nanostructu

Genomic evidence for aerotrophy as a defining trait of Ktedonobacteria inhabiting silica-rich oligotrophic caves.

Members of the class Ktedonobacteria (phylum Chloroflexota) are widespread across various terrestrial environments, including oligotrophic caves, although the genomic basis underlying this distribution remains unclear. Here, we present a systematic genomic analysis of Ktedonobacteria across ecosystems, with a focus on oligotrophic caves. Cave Ktedonobacteria belong to novel genera within the Ktedonobacteraceae and harbour genes associated with a mixotrophic metabolism combining the use of organic and inorganic substrates as energy and carbon sources. Comparative analyses of all available Ktedo

Concordant Changes in Gene Expression and Nucleotides Underlie Independent Adaptation to Hydrogen-Sulfide-Rich Environments.

The colonization of novel environments often involves changes in gene expression, protein coding sequence, or both. Studies of how populations adapt to novel conditions, however, often focus on only one of these two processes, potentially missing out on the relative importance of different parts of the evolutionary process. In this study, our objectives were 1) to better understand the qualitative concordance between conclusions drawn from analyses of differential expression and changes in genic sequence and 2) to quantitatively test whether differentially expressed genes were enriched for sit

Environment-Related Variation in the Human Mid-Face.

Previous studies that have examined mid-facial morphology in geographically dispersed and genetically diverse groups of humans have shown a strong adaptation of the nasal part to extreme cold environments, which was not observed in non-Arctic regions. However, it remains unclear whether different parts of the mid-face area show independent adaptation to nonpolar climates, and if so, how this adaptation impacted the morphology. To address this question, we investigated potential associations between climatic variables and the mid-facial shape in 14 populations, focusing on four aspects of the m
