Abnormal MEG oscillatory activity during visual processing in the prefrontal cortices and frontal eye-fields of the aging HIV brain.

OBJECTIVE: Shortly after infection, HIV enters the brain and causes widespread inflammation and neuronal damage, which ultimately leads to neuropsychological impairments. Despite a large body of neuroscience and imaging studies, the pathophysiology of these HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) remains unresolved. Previous neuroimaging studies have shown greater activation in HIV-infected patients during strenuous tasks in frontal and parietal cortices, and less activation in the primary sensory cortices during rest and sensory stimulation. METHODS: High-density magnetoencephalograph

An interstitial deletion of 7.1Mb in chromosome band 6p22.3 associated with developmental delay and dysmorphic features including heart defects, short neck, and eye abnormalities.

Seven cases with an interstitial deletion of the short arm of chromosome 6 involving the 6p22 region have previously been reported. The clinical phenotype of these cases includes developmental delay, brain-, heart-, and kidney defects, eye abnormalities, short neck, craniofacial malformations, hypotonia, as well as clinodactyly or syndactyly. Here, we report a patient with a 7.1Mb interstitial deletion of chromosome band 6p22.3, detected by genome-wide screening array CGH. The patient is a 4-year-old girl with developmental delay and dysmorphic features including eye abnormalities, short neck,

A novel Cys1638Tyr NC1 domain substitution in alpha5(IV) collagen causes Alport syndrome with late onset renal failure without hearing loss or eye abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in the type IV collagen gene, COL4A5, are associated with Alport syndrome, characterized by ultrastructural abnormalities of the glomerular basement membrane (GBM), with or without progressive loss of renal function, characteristic ophthalmic signs and/or high tone sensorineural deafness. More than 300 sequence variants in type IV collagen have been identified, including alterations in the non-collagenous NC1 domain. METHODS: We performed linkage analysis and sequencing to identify the mutation in a New Zealand family with Alport glomerulonephritis and late onset renal f

Do Alarm Cues on ECG Monitors Enhance ICU Nurses' Detection of Abnormal Data? Evidence From an Eye-Tracking Experiment.

BACKGROUND: Most modern electrocardiographic (ECG) monitors include visual alarm cues to flag abnormalities. Whether these cues consistently improve nurses' recognition of abnormal data remains uncertain. AIM: The primary aim is to examine the effects of alarm cues on ICU nurses' behavioural performance when identifying abnormal physiological parameters while using bedside vital-sign monitors. The secondary aim was to investigate how alarm cues influence nurses' visual attention patterns. STUDY DESIGN: A within-subjects experiment with ICU nurses using a simulated monitor under two condition

Acute corneal epithelial debridement unmasks the corneal stromal nerve responses to ocular stimulation in rats: implications for abnormal sensations of the eye.

It is widely accepted that the mechanisms for transducing sensory information reside in the nerve terminals. Occasionally, however, studies have appeared demonstrating that similar mechanisms may exist in the axon to which these terminals are connected. We examined this issue in the cornea, where nerve terminals in the epithelial cell layers are easily accessible for debridement, leaving the underlying stromal (axonal) nerves undisturbed. In isoflurane-anesthetized rats, we recorded extracellularly from single trigeminal ganglion neurons innervating the cornea that are excited by ocular drynes

Neuromelanin-sensitive MRI for identifying dopamine transporter imaging abnormality risk in idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder.

Neuromelanin-sensitive magnetic resonance imaging (NM-MRI) enables non-invasive assessment of the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc). However, its utility in identifying dopaminergic dysfunction in idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) remains unclear. This study evaluated NM-MRI alterations in the SNpc, stratified by dopamine transporter (DaT) imaging status, to assess its performance in detecting early dopaminergic alterations. This combined retrospective and prospective study included 66 patients with iRBD (45 males, 67.0 ± 6.3 years) and 30 healthy controls (HCs)

Abnormal patterns of sleep and EEG power distribution during non-rapid eye movement sleep in the sheep model of Huntington's disease.

Sleep disruption is a common invisible symptom of neurological dysfunction in Huntington's disease (HD) that takes an insidious toll on well-being of patients. Here we used electroencephalography (EEG) to examine sleep in 6 year old OVT73 transgenic sheep (Ovis aries) that we used as a presymptomatic model of HD. We hypothesized that despite the lack of overt symptoms of HD at this age, early alterations of the sleep-wake pattern and EEG powers may already be present. We recorded EEG from female transgenic and normal sheep (5/group) during two undisturbed 'baseline' nights with different light

Abnormal eye movement patterns in adolescent and early adulthood MDD patients with and without psychotic symptoms: A multi-paradigm feature-based study.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) heterogeneity is frequently overlooked in current diagnostic approaches, despite evidence that certain subtypes, particularly MDD with psychotic symptoms (MDDwP), are associated with poorer prognoses. Eye movement assessment has demonstrated promise as a potential biomarker for psychiatric disorders; however, research into eye movement patterns in MDD with and without psychotic features is scarce. This study aimed to investigate the potential value of eye movement as a biomarker for MDD. METHODS: This study enrolled 69 participants, including 15 pat

Nocturnal agitation in Huntington disease is caused by arousal-related abnormal movements rather than by rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Huntington disease (HD) and their spouses often complain of agitation during sleep, but the causes are mostly unknown. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate sleep and nocturnal movements in patients with various HD stages and CAG repeats length. METHODS: The clinical features and sleep studies of 29 patients with HD were retrospectively collected (11 referred for genotype-phenotype correlations and 18 for agitation during sleep) and compared with those of 29 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. All patients had videopolysomnography, but the movements during arousals were re-anal

Differences in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep abnormalities between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder patients: REM interruption correlated with nightmare complaints in PTSD.

OBJECTIVE: The presence of repeated nightmares in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been hypothesized as a dysfunction of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, but there has been remarkably little agreement about the pathophysiology. This presents a deterrent to more effective treatments. REM sleep abnormalities including elevated REM density also have been replicated in major depressive disorder (MDD). The purpose of this study was to clarify the difference of REM sleep abnormalities between the two disorders for understanding the pathophysiology of sleep disturbances in PTSD. METHODS: Poly
