OBJECTIVE: Our study investigated body image representations in female patients with anorexia nervosa and healthy controls using a size estimation with pictures of their own body. We also explored a method to reduce body image distortions through right hemispheric activation.
METHOD: Pictures of participants' own bodies were shown on the left or right visual fields for 130 ms after presentation of neutral, positive, or negative word primes, which could be self-relevant or not, with the task of classifying the picture as "thinner than", "equal to", or "fatter than" one's own body. Introduction: Childhood sexual and physical abuse (CSPA) can lead to a heightened risk to develop a posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) show limited efficacy for CSPA-related PTSD. Highlighting the need for alternative approaches, such as Imagery Rescripting (ImRs), which, when integrated into standard treatment, may improve therapeutic outcomes for these individuals. Objective: This case report demonstrates the effectiveness of integrating Imagery Rescripting (ImRs) into standard EMDR treatment for PT

INTRODUCTION: Functional neurological disorder (FND) refers to an involuntary loss of control over and/or aberrant perception of the body. Common presenting symptoms are functional (non-epileptic) seizures, and functional motor disorder, for example, walking difficulties, weakness or tremor. Greater access to effective treatments would lead to reduced distress and disability; and reduce unnecessary healthcare costs. This study will examine eye-movement desensitisation and reprocessing therapy (EMDR) as a treatment for FND. EMDR is an evidence-based treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (

Background: Yoga, a mind-body practice that enhances emotional regulation and self-awareness, may be an effective stabilisation tool for trauma-focused therapy, particularly for patients with childhood abuse-related posttraumatic stress disorder (CA-PTSD), who exhibit strong avoidance strategies. Objective: This study aimed to test the efficacy of group yoga sessions followed by individual EMDR sessions on PTSD symptoms. Secondary objectives included evaluating the efficacy of this combined treatment on the most common associated comorbidities, and measuring the adherence and effectiveness of E

BACKGROUND: Trauma exposure is pervasive in people with an At Risk Mental State (ARMS) and is associated with adverse clinical and functional outcomes. While promising developments have been made in treating trauma in psychosis, evidence regarding the efficacy of trauma therapies in ARMS individuals is limited. This trial aims to evaluate the feasibility of conducting a future randomised controlled trial (RCT) to determine the efficacy of Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) and trauma focused cognitive behavioural therapy (TF-CBT) in people with ARMS.
METHOD: Seventy ARMS ind

Background: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in adolescence has a high prevalence and risk of disability, but current treatments show limited effectiveness and high drop-out and relapse rates. Although the role of distressing experiences that relate to the development and maintenance of MDD has been recognized for decades, the efficacy of a trauma-focused treatment approach for MDD has hardly been studied. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy as a stand-alone intervention in adolescents diagnosed with MDD. We hypothesized that

This meta-analysis examined the efficacy of prolonged exposure (PE) therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Fifty-two randomized controlled trials were identified through systematic searches of five electronic databases through March 2026; 43 studies (54 comparisons; N = 4964) were included in quantitative synthesis. PE produced medium-to-large effects on PTSD severity relative to inactive controls (Hedges' g = 0.74, 95% CI [0.51, 0.98]; k = 20) and a small but significant advantage over active treatments (g = 0.24 [0.12, 0.36]; k = 34). This advantage was almost entirely attributabl

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a generalized, widespread chronic pain disorder affecting 2.7% of the general population. In recent years, different studies have observed a strong association between FM and psychological trauma. Therefore, a trauma-focused psychotherapy, such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), combined with a non-invasive brain stimulation technique, such as multifocal transcranial current stimulation (MtCS), could be an innovative adjunctive treatment option. This double-blind randomized controlled trial (RCT) analyzes if EMDR therapy is effective in th

PURPOSE: The prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is higher among veterans, and can lead to disastrous consequences such as suicide. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is recommended in first-line psychotherapies for PTSD. Virtual reality exposure (VRE) coupled with 18F-FDG PET imaging can highlight the activated brain regions during stress exposure. The objective of this study is to identify, after EMDR therapy, the regions of brain metabolism that evolve during the stress exposure of a war scene with symptomatic remission in a group of military veterans suffer

While post-stroke depression (PSD) is a common sequelae of stroke, many stroke survivors also have expressive aphasia (i.e., the inability to produce spoken or written language), which limits or prevents treating depression with talk psychotherapy. Unlike most psychotherapy modalities, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) does not require extensive verbal communication to therapists, which might make EMDR an ideal treatment modality for aphasic patients with mental health concerns. The authors present the first known case reporting EMDR in aphasia, describing the treatment of a

BACKGROUND: Interparental violence has persistent adverse effects on victimized parents and children. Young children, including infants and toddlers, are at particular risk to develop long-lasting negative outcomes, and yet specific evidence on effective intervention approaches for this vulnerable group is still lacking. This study will test the effectiveness of an attachment- and trauma-informed intervention approach in a sample of parent-child dyads who have experienced severe interparental violence. We test the individual and combined effects of two interventions: (1) "Nederlandse Intervent

Background: The global rise in forced migration has led to increased mental health challenges among displaced populations, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (CPTSD). Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, and its group-based adaptation - the Group Traumatic Episode Protocol (GTEP) - has shown promise in addressing trauma in such contexts. Objective: This retrospective pilot study evaluates the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of a modified GTEP protocol tailored for migrant populations at a regional psychotrauma centre in Eur

BACKGROUND: Tetris has been proposed as a preventative intervention to reduce intrusive memories of a traumatic event. However, no neuroimaging study has assessed Tetris in patients with existing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or explored how playing Tetris may affect brain structure.
METHODS: We recruited patients with combat-related PTSD before psychotherapy and randomly assigned them to an experimental Tetris and therapy group (n = 20) or to a therapy-only control group (n = 20). In the control group, participants completed therapy as usual: eye movement desensitization and reprocess

BACKGROUND: There is not one case report of successful trauma treatment with the use of an evidence-based treatment method in people with substantially limited verbal capacities. This paper assessed the applicability of eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) in two clients with moderate ID, serious behavioural problems, and histories of negative life events.
METHOD: The 8-phase protocol of EMDR, a first-line treatment for psychological trauma, was applied.
RESULTS: In both cases, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-like symptoms decreased in a total of only 6 and 5 sessions, r

Research showed that more than 30% of patients with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) do not benefit from evidence-based treatments: Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). These are patients with prolonged and multiple traumatization, with poor verbal memory, and patients with emotional over-modulation. Retelling traumatic experiences in detail is poorly tolerated by these patients and might be a reason for not starting or not completing the recommended treatments. Due to lack of evidence, no alternative treatments are r

BACKGROUND: Empirical evidence highlights that psychotherapists and applied psychologists experience stress, anxiety, depression, emotional exhaustion, secondary traumatic stress, and other symptoms of somatic and psychological distress. Although studies suggest that volunteering can protect somatic and psychological well-being in the general population, these relationships have not been investigated in mental health professionals.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the role of volunteering and work-related characteristics in symptoms of somatic and psychological distress among psychother

Rhythmic bilateral stimulation is a defining procedural feature of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), yet its physiological significance remains unresolved. Existing accounts have mainly emphasized rapid cognitive and attentional mechanisms during traumatic memory processing, including working-memory taxation, dual attention, and reductions in memory vividness and emotionality. This Hypothesis and Theory article develops a complementary upstream physiological model that separates acute cognitive-attentional effects from proximal sensorimotor-autonomic coupling and slower dow

BACKGROUND: Trauma-focused psychotherapy is treatment of choice for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, about half of patients do not respond. Recently, there is increased interest in brain criticality, which assesses the phase transition between order and disorder in brain activity. Operating close to this borderline is theorized to facilitate optimal information processing. We studied if brain criticality is related to future response to treatment, hypothesizing that treatment responders' brains function closer to criticality.
METHODS: Functional magnetic resonance imaging resti

BACKGROUND: Considering the recently growing number of potentially traumatic events in Europe, the European Psychiatric Association undertook a study to investigate clinicians' treatment choices for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
METHODS: The case-based analysis included 611 participants, who correctly classified the vignette as a case of PTSD, from Central/ Eastern Europe (CEE) (n = 279), Southern Europe (SE) (n = 92), Northern Europe (NE) (n = 92), and Western Europe (WE) (N = 148).
RESULTS: About 82% woulduse antidepressants (sertraline being the most preferred one). Benzodiazepin
