Evaluation of eye movements and visual performance in patients with cataract.

Eye movement is an essential component of visual perception. Eye movement disorders have been observed in many eye disease, and are thought to affect various visual performance in daily life. However, eye movement behaviors of the elderly with cataract are poorly understood, and the impact of cataract surgery on eye movements has not been investigated. In this study, we observed the eye movement behaviors in thirty patients with bilateral age-related cataract while performing three performance-based tasks (visual search, face recognition and reading). Eye movements were automatically recorded

Brainstem neural circuits for fixation and generation of saccadic eye movements.

We review neural connections of the superior colliculus (SC) and brainstem saccade-related neurons in relation to saccade generation mechanism. The caudal and rostral SC play a role in saccade generation and visual fixation, respectively. This functional differentiation suggests that different connections should exist between these two SC areas and their brainstem target neurons. We examined synaptic potentials evoked by stimulation of the rostral and caudal SC in inhibitory burst neurons (IBNs) and omnipause neurons (OPNs) in anesthetized cats. The caudal and rostral SC produced monosynaptic

Cerebellum-mediated trainability of eye and head movements for dynamic gazing.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether gaze stabilization exercises (GSEs) improve eye and head movements and whether low-frequency cerebellar repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) inhibits GSE trainability. METHODS: 25 healthy adults (real rTMS, n = 12; sham rTMS, n = 13) were recruited. Real or sham rTMS was performed for 15 min (1 Hz, 900 stimulations). The center of the butterfly coil was set 1 cm below the inion in the real rTMS. Following stimulation, 10 trials of 1 min of a GSE were conducted at 1 min intervals. In the GSE, the subjects were instructed to stand upright and hor

Investigating Effects of Typographic Variables on Webpage Reading Through Eye Movements.

Webpage reading is ubiquitous in daily life. As Web technologies allow for a large variety of layouts and visual styles, the many formatting options may lead to poor design choices, including low readability. This research capitalizes on the existing readability guidelines for webpage design to outline several visuo-typographic variables and explore their effect on eye movements during webpage reading. Participants included children and adults, and for both groups typical readers and readers with dyslexia were considered. Actual webpages, rather than artificial ones, served as stimuli. This al

Dissonant Representations of Visual Space in Prefrontal Cortex during Eye Movements.

We used local field potentials (LFPs) and spikes to investigate representations of visual space in prefrontal cortex and the dynamics of those representations during eye movements. Spatial information contained in LFPs of the frontal eye field (FEF) was differentially distributed across frequencies, with a majority of that information being carried in alpha and high-gamma bands and minimal signal in the low-gamma band. During fixation, spatial information from alpha and high-gamma bands and spiking activity was robust across cortical layers. Receptive fields (RFs) derived from alpha and high-g

Eye movements in essential tremor patients with parkinsonian and cerebellar signs.

UNLABELLED: Apart from intention tremor essential tremor (ET) patients may display other cerebellar signs, like dysmetria or tandem gait disturbances as well as parkinsonian signs like resting tremor, cogwheel sign, subtle bradykinesia. Previous reports claimed the occurrence of the eye movement abnormalities characteristic for dysfunction of cerebellar dorsal vermis in ET patients with concomitant cerebellar signs. There are no previous reports evaluating the eye movement abnormalities in ET patients with concomitant parkinsonian signs. The objective of this study was to determine the relatio

Normal correspondence of tectal maps for saccadic eye movements in strabismus.

The superior colliculus is a major brain stem structure for the production of saccadic eye movements. Electrical stimulation at any given point in the motor map generates saccades of defined amplitude and direction. It is unknown how this saccade map is affected by strabismus. Three macaques were raised with exotropia, an outwards ocular deviation, by detaching the medial rectus tendon in each eye at age 1 mo. The animals were able to make saccades to targets with either eye and appeared to alternate fixation freely. To probe the organization of the superior colliculus, microstimulation was ap

Novel method for evaluation of eye movements in patients with narcolepsy.

BACKGROUND: Narcolepsy causes abnormalities in the control of wake-sleep, non-rapid-eye-movement (non-REM) sleep and REM sleep, which includes specific eye movements (EMs). In this study, we aim to evaluate EM characteristics in narcolepsy as compared to controls using an automated detector. METHODS: We developed a data-driven method to detect EMs during sleep based on two EOG signals recorded as part of a polysomnography (PSG). The method was optimized using the manually scored hypnograms from 36 control subjects. The detector was applied on a clinical sample with subjects suspected for cent

Acute onset incomitant image disparity modifies saccadic and vergence eye movements.

New-onset impairment of ocular motility will cause incomitant strabismus, i.e., a gaze-dependent ocular misalignment. This ocular misalignment will cause retinal disparity, that is, a deviation of the spatial position of an image on the retina of both eyes, which is a trigger for a vergence eye movement that results in ocular realignment. If the vergence movement fails, the eyes remain misaligned, resulting in double vision. Adaptive processes to such incomitant vergence stimuli are poorly understood. In this study, we have investigated the physiological oculomotor response of saccadic and ver

Effect of artificial scotomas on open-loop disparity vergence eye movements.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of an artificial scotoma on open-loop disparity vergence responses (DVRs) and vergence control mechanisms, we examined open-loop DVRs to disparity stimuli using monocular artificial scotomas in normal subjects. METHODS: Using a mirror haploscope with two computer monitors, we delivered disparity stimuli on a pair of random dot patterns subtending 40 by 30 degrees at 47 cm from each eye. The scotomas were black circles located in the center of a random dot pattern for the left eye. Eye movements of both eyes were recorded with a magnetic search coil system.

In pursuit of delay-related brain activity for anticipatory eye movements.

How the brain stores motion information and subsequently uses it to follow a moving target is largely unknown. This is mainly due to previous fMRI studies using paradigms in which the eye movements cannot be segregated from the storage of this motion information. To avoid this problem we used a novel paradigm designed in our lab in which we interlaced a delay (2, 4 or 6 seconds) between the 1(st) and 2(nd) presentation of a moving stimulus. Using this design we could examine brain activity during a delay period using fMRI and have subsequently found a number of brain areas that reveal sustaine

Clinical significance of pathological eye movements in diagnosing posterior fossa stroke.

CONCLUSION: Close observation of pathological eye movements such as disconjugate eye movements, multi-directional gaze nystagmus, and persistent unilateral gaze nystagmus may facilitate the effort of clinicians to arrange magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study, because physical examinations may overlook the posterior fossa lesions. OBJECTIVE: This paper reviews our experience of patients with posterior fossa stroke via observation of pathological eye movements over the past 10 years. METHODS: Seventy patients with posterior fossa stroke manifested as acute vertiginous attack were admitted. A

Effect of tongue stimulation on nystagmus eye movements in blind patients.

We have observed dramatic effects of tactile tongue stimulation on nystagmus eye movements in patients with acquired blindness, and we report these results. Six adult subjects (3 subjects with light perception or worse vision and 3 normal subjects) were included in this study. Causes of blindness included traumatic explosion, anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, and central retinal artery occlusion. Duration of blindness was 15, 3 and 1.5 years, respectively. A video eye tracking system (Eyelink 1000) was used to record eye movements. The eye movement recording (EMR) was repeated four times in

High-throughput classification of clinical populations from natural viewing eye movements.

Many high-prevalence neurological disorders involve dysfunctions of oculomotor control and attention, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), and Parkinson's disease (PD). Previous studies have examined these deficits with clinical neurological evaluation, structured behavioral tasks, and neuroimaging. Yet, time and monetary costs prevent deploying these evaluations to large at-risk populations, which is critically important for earlier detection and better treatment. We devised a high-throughput, low-cost method where participants sim

Effects of unilateral midbrain lesions on gaze (eye and head) movements.

The rostral midbrain, especially the rostral interstitial nucleus of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (RIMLF) and the interstitial nucleus of Cajal (INC), plays an important role in the control of eye movements. Although the effect of midbrain lesions on eye movements is well investigated, little is known about its effect on head movements. In this study, we measured eye and head (gaze) movements in five patients with unilateral, acute midbrain lesions and nine healthy controls. In all patients, vertical eye velocity was reduced as a result of the lesion compared to healthy subjects, whereas

Central and peripheral correlates of eye movements in selected mood disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Abnormalities and disturbances of saccadic and pursuit eye movements were studied in several mental disorders and diseases. Certain irregularities in the particular oculomotor behaviour have been proposed they may correspond with specific type of mental disorder. It was our aim to contribute to this question by analyzing the bioelectrical correlates of the visual-oculomotor integration in patients suffering from panic disorder and from depressive symptoms. METHODS: The horizontal saccadic eye movements, optokinetic nystagmus, saccadic eye movement evoked potentials as well as sacc

Toward and away from spiders: eye-movements in spider-fearful participants.

Highly fearful individuals show attentional biases toward threat. However, it is still unclear whether initial engagement of attention toward threat or difficulties to disengage from threat is the underlying mechanism. We used eye-tracking to investigate how quickly fear-relevant pictures are identified and whether they distract from the allocation of attention toward neutral targets. Pairs of fear-relevant and neutral pictures were presented to 18 high and 16 low spider-fearful participants. They were instructed to either fixate on a target or to fixate on the opposite picture, while eye move

Internuclear and supranuclear disorders of eye movements: clinical features and causes.

Eye movements bring visual stimuli to the fovea and also maintain foveal fixation on a moving target and during head movements. These movements are performed by the ocular motor system that consists of ocular motor nerves and nuclei in the brainstem originating in the cerebral cortex, cerebellum, vestibular structures, and the extraocular muscles. The ocular motor system is divided according to anatomic location into infranuclear, nuclear, internuclear, and supranuclear components. It is important to distinguish supranuclear and internuclear from nuclear and infranuclear disturbances affecting
