Writing with the Eyes: The Effect of Age on Eye-Tracking Performance in Non-Disabled Adults and a Comparison with Bimanual Typing.

Eye-tracking technology is advancing rapidly, becoming cheaper and easier to use and more robust. This has fueled an increase in its implementation for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Nowadays, Eye-Tracking Communication Devices (ETCDs) can be an effective aid for people with disabilities and communication problems. However, it is not clear what level of performance is attainable with these devices or how to optimize them for AAC use. The objective of this observational study was to provide data on non-disabled adults' performance with ETCD regarding (a) range of eye-typing a

Home-based eye tracking for early autism screening: a scoping review of approaches, evidence, and implementation challenges.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is essential for improving developmental outcomes but remains challenging due to diagnostic delays, subjectivity, and resource limitations. Eye-tracking offers objective indices of social attention and could improve access to early screening when deployed on consumer devices at home. This scoping review synthesizes evidence on home-deployable eye-tracking as digital biomarkers for early ASD screening, associated machine learning methods, and feasibility of real-world implementation. METHODS: Following the Arksey and O'Malley f

Processing of Plural Marking in Nouns by German-Speaking Children With Normal Hearing and Children With Cochlear Implants: An Eye-Tracking Study.

PURPOSE: Our goal is to understand how the different types of plural marking are understood and processed by children with cochlear implants (CIs): (a) how does salience affect the processing of plural marking, (b) how is this processing affected by the incomplete signal provided by the CIs, and (c) is it linked to individual factors such as chronological age, vocabulary development, and phonological working memory? METHOD: Sixteen children with CIs and 30 age-matched children with normal hearing (NH) participated in an eye-tracking study. Their task was to choose the corresponding picture to

Eye-tracking during simulated endotracheal newborn intubation: a prospective, observational multi-center study.

BACKGROUND: The aim was to assess health care providers' (HCPs) visual attention (VA) by using eye-tracking glasses during a simulated neonatal intubation. METHODS: HCPs from three pediatric and neonatal departments (Feldkirch and Vienna, Austria, and Edmonton, Canada) completed a simulated neonatal intubation scenario while wearing eye-tracking glasses (Tobii Pro Glasses 2®, Tobii, Stockholm, Sweden) to record their VA. Main outcomes included duration of intubation, success rate, and VA. We further compared orotracheal and nasotracheal intubations. RESULTS: 30 participants were included. 50

Introducing TRECEY: An algorithm for tremor compensation using eye-tracking during multimedia remote controller operation in Parkinson's disease (PD).

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most prevalent progressive neurodegenerative disorder in the world. It affects 2-3% of older adults 65 and above and nearly 4% of older adults older than 85 years. One of PD's most common motor symptoms is tremors in the limbs. These tremors cause significant difficulty in performing everyday activities such as buttoning shirts, using a fork, writing, and operating a computer mouse or television remote making the patients reliant on their caregivers. There is no cure for PD, and treatment options to manage the tremors have decreasing response over time. S

Combined eye tracking and electroencephalography during referential selection in dyadic interaction.

Understanding language in real-world interaction requires methods that integrate auditory, visual, and neural signals. We present a proof-of-concept study combining mobile electroencephalography (EEG) and eye tracking to investigate referential selection during dyadic communication. Using a simplified version of the director task, pairs of participants engaged in naturalistic object-movement instructions while EEG and gaze data were recorded and synchronized via LabStreamingLayer, allowing us to calculate overlap-corrected, regression-based event-related potentials (rERPs) time-locked to spoke

Aesthetic preference and gaze-based visual attention in atlas-cover design: Evidence from an eye-tracking study.

Atlas covers communicate thematic identity and shape first impressions, yet their design remains largely guided by heuristic experience rather than empirical evidence. Although eye-tracking research has examined map use, packaging design, and visual interfaces, little is known about whether atlas-cover variables that enhance perceived attractiveness also align with gaze-based visual-attention indicators. This study addresses this gap by examining how color harmony, graphic style, and layout configuration influence subjective and eye-tracking responses to atlas covers. Forty valid participants

Language-Switching Cost in Chinese-English Bilingual Reading Comprehension: Evidence from Eye-Tracking.

Code-switching, or language-switching, which is the use of elements from two or more languages in the same utterance or in the same stretch of conversation (Paradis et al., 2011), is prevalent among bilingual and multilingual speakers. According to the parallel activation hypothesis of language comprehension, both languages of a bilingual are activated during sentence processing, even when there is only monolingual input (Spivey & Marian, 1999). However, studies have also shown that such language mixing can slow down processing (Macnamara & Kushnir, 1971; Soares & Grosjean, 1984). This cost ha

Unveiling the cognitive features of L2 Chinese reading: Machine learning reveals subskill-specific and general eye-movement patterns.

Traditional reading assessments rely heavily on offline summative outcomes, obscuring the implicit cognitive dynamics of online processing. To render these latent cognitive dynamics empirically tractable, this study employs a data-driven machine learning approach within a non-embedded reading paradigm to reveal six cognitive subskills in 193 learners of Chinese as a second language (L2). Eye-movement data were collected during minimally task-constrained reading phase. The results indicate that eye-movement behavior predicts delayed comprehension performance significantly above chance for five

Towards Automated Analysis of Gaze Behavior from Consumer VR Devices for Neurological Diagnosis.

Recent studies have demonstrated that eye tracking is a valuable tool in the detection, classification and staging of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's Disease (PD). However, traditional methods for capturing gaze data often rely on expensive and non-engaging clinical equipment such as video-oculography, limiting their accessibility and scalability. In this work, we investigate the feasibility of using eye tracking data collected via consumer-grade virtual reality (VR) headsets to support neurological diagnostics in a more accessible and user-friendly manner. This approach enables

Pre-stimulus oculomotor signatures of deception in the Concealed Information Test.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The detection of concealed knowledge related to a crime in forensic settings is usually performed using a traditional polygraph that records physiological responses to specific stimuli. While these reactive measures are standard, there is growing interest in non-contact behavioral markers that can identify deceptive intent. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of anticipatory eye-movement patterns and machine learning classifiers in discriminating between guilty and control participants during the pre-stimulus phase of the examination, identifying cognitive marke

Digit-tracking reveals curiosity-driven visual attention in macaque monkeys.

We used digit-tracking, a touch-based method for assessing visual attention, to investigate spontaneous exploration in macaque monkeys. By engaging with degraded images on a touch-sensitive display, monkeys could uncover high-resolution portions through finger movements, allowing for natural and unrestricted interaction. Monkeys received juice rewards after touching a predetermined number of pixels, but no specific regions were targeted. Attention maps were generated from their interactions, along with data from human digit-tracking and monkey eye-tracking experiments. Direct comparisons acros

The role of ambiguous valence, origin, and activation in behavioral and eye-tracking measurements during N-back task.

This study investigates how emotionally ambiguous words can influence performance in the N-back task. In two experiments, we measured differences in behavior (performance accuracy and reaction times) and management of visual attention (eye-tracking measurement: number of fixations, mean duration of fixation) for ambiguous and unambiguous words. We hypothesized that words ambiguous on one of three emotional spaces - valence (positivity and negativity), origin (automaticity and reflectiveness), and activation (arousal and subjective significance) - would increase accuracy in the N-back task (Exp

Feasibility of Real-Time Astronaut Eye-Tracking During Analog Extravehicular Activities.

INTRODUCTION: As lunar missions increase in frequency and duration, astronauts will conduct more extravehicular activities (EVAs) under demanding conditions that elevate workload, reduce situational awareness, and heighten the risk of operational errors. Despite extensive use in other high-risk fields, eye-tracking technology has not yet been applied to assess gaze behavior during EVAs. We evaluated the feasibility of using mobile eye-tracking within analog EVA suits, focusing on implementation, data quality, livestreaming capability, and the ability to compare gaze behavior across tasks and s

Eye Tracking Shows Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children with Cochlear Implants Read Like Hearing Peers.

This study investigated the reading processes of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children with cochlear implants (CIs) in comparison to typically hearing (TH) peers using eye-tracking methodology. While prior research on CI users has primarily focused on the level of reading performance, our approach captured word-by-word reading behavior to examine fixation durations, fixation counts, and regressions.Twenty-two DHH children with CIs (14 female; Mage = 10.25 years, SD = 1.31) and 26 TH children (16 female; Mage = 10.5 years, SD = 0.95), silently read an age-appropriate Polish text while their e

Reduced on-line speech gesture integration during multimodal language processing in adults with moderate-severe traumatic brain injury: Evidence from eye-tracking.

BACKGROUND: Language is multimodal and situated in rich visual contexts. Language is also incremental, unfolding moment-to-moment in real time, yet few studies have examined how spoken language interacts with gesture and visual context during multimodal language processing. Gesture is a rich communication cue that is integrally related to speech and often depicts concrete referents from the visual world. Using eye-tracking in an adapted visual world paradigm, we examined how participants with and without moderate-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) use gesture to resolve temporary referential

Eye-Tracking-Based Measurement of Social Visual Engagement Compared With Expert Clinical Diagnosis of Autism.

IMPORTANCE: In the US, children with signs of autism often experience more than 1 year of delay before diagnosis and often experience longer delays if they are from racially, ethnically, or economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Most diagnoses are also received without use of standardized diagnostic instruments. To aid in early autism diagnosis, eye-tracking measurement of social visual engagement has shown potential as a performance-based biomarker. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the performance of eye-tracking measurement of social visual engagement (index test) relative to expert clinical diagnos
