Effects of others' gaze and facial expression on an observer's microsaccades and their association with ADHD tendencies.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of others' gaze on an observer's microsaccades. We also aimed to conduct preliminary investigations on the relationship between the microsaccadic response to a gaze and a gazer's facial expression and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) tendencies. METHODS: Twenty healthy undergraduate and graduate students performed a peripheral target detection task by using unpredictable gaze cues. During the task, the participants' eye movements, along with changes in pupil size and response times for target detection, were recorded.

Central nervous activity during a dot probe task with facial expressions in fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic pain condition accompanied by affective symptoms and cognitive impairments. This study investigated central nervous correlates of attentional and emotional processing in FMS. Therefore, event-related potentials were recorded in 26 FMS patients and 26 healthy controls during a dot probe task, which required participants to decide which side of the screen an asterisk was displayed on; the asterisk was immediately preceded by a facial expression (anger, pain, happiness, neutral) on the left or right side. Comorbid depression was also assessed. In patients,

Sorting pain out of salience: assessment of pain facial expressions in the human fetus.

INTRODUCTION: The question of whether the human fetus experiences pain has received substantial attention in recent times. With the advent of high-definition 4-dimensional ultrasound (4D-US), it is possible to record fetal body and facial expressions. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether human fetuses demonstrate discriminative acute behavioral responses to nociceptive input. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 5 fetuses with diaphragmatic hernia with indication of intrauterine surgery (fetoscopic endoluminal tracheal occlusion) and 8 healthy fetuses, who were scanned with 4D-US in 1 of

Quantitative facial expression analysis revealed the efficacy and time course of oxytocin in autism.

Discrepancies in efficacy between single-dose and repeated administration of oxytocin for autism spectrum disorder have led researchers to hypothesize that time-course changes in efficacy are induced by repeated administrations of the peptide hormone. However, repeatable, objective, and quantitative measurement of autism spectrum disorder's core symptoms are lacking, making it difficult to examine potential time-course changes in efficacy. We tested this hypothesis using repeatable, objective, and quantitative measurement of the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder. We examined videos rec

A deep neural network to assess spontaneous pain from mouse facial expressions.

Grimace scales quantify characteristic facial expressions associated with spontaneous pain in rodents and other mammals. However, these scales have not been widely adopted largely because of the time and effort required for highly trained humans to manually score the images. Convoluted neural networks were recently developed that distinguish individual humans and objects in images. Here, we trained one of these networks, the InceptionV3 convolutional neural net, with a large set of human-scored mouse images. Output consists of a binary pain/no-pain assessment and a confidence score. Our automa

Effects of Early Neglect Experience on Recognition and Processing of Facial Expressions: A Systematic Review.

Background: Child neglect is highly prevalent and associated with a series of biological and social consequences. Early neglect may alter the recognition of emotional faces, but its precise impact remains unclear. We aim to review and analyze data from recent literature about recognition and processing of facial expressions in individuals with history of childhood neglect. Methods: We conducted a systematic review using PubMed, PsycINFO, ScIELO and EMBASE databases in the search of studies for the past 10 years. Results: In total, 14 studies were selected and critically reviewed. A heterogenei

Analysis of facial expressions in parkinson's disease through video-based automatic methods.

BACKGROUND: The automatic analysis of facial expressions is an evolving field that finds several clinical applications. One of these applications is the study of facial bradykinesia in Parkinson's disease (PD), which is a major motor sign of this neurodegenerative illness. Facial bradykinesia consists in the reduction/loss of facial movements and emotional facial expressions called hypomimia. NEW METHOD: In this work we propose an automatic method for studying facial expressions in PD patients relying on video-based METHODS: 17 Parkinsonian patients and 17 healthy control subjects were asked

Sensitivity to facial expressions among extremely low birth weight survivors in their 30s.

The current study investigated the impact of birth weight on the ability to recognize facial expressions in adulthood among the longest known prospectively followed cohort of extremely low birth weight survivors (ELBW; <1,000 g). We measured perceptual threshold to detect subtle facial expressions and confusion among different emotion categories in order to disentangle visual perceptual ability from emotional processing. ELBW adults (N = 64, Mage  = 31.9 years) were more likely than normal birth weight (NBW) controls (N = 82, Mage  = 32.5 years) to see fear in angry faces. This finding was not

Abnormal amygdala and prefrontal cortex activation to facial expressions in pediatric bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Previous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies in pediatric bipolar disorder (BD) have reported greater amygdala and less dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) activation to facial expressions compared to healthy controls. The current study investigates whether these differences are associated with the early or late phase of activation, suggesting different temporal characteristics of brain responses. METHOD: A total of 20 euthymic adolescents with familial BD (14 male) and 21 healthy control subjects (13 male) underwent fMRI scanning during presentation of happy, s

Limbic hyperactivation during processing of neutral facial expressions in children with bipolar disorder.

Reflecting a paradigm shift in clinical neuroscience, many chronic psychiatric illnesses are now hypothesized to result from perturbed neural development. However, most work in this area focuses on schizophrenia. Here, we extend this paradigm to pediatric bipolar disorder (BD), thus demonstrating traction in the developmental psychobiology perspective. To study amygdala dysfunction, we examined neural mechanisms mediating face processing in 22 youths (mean age 14.21 +/- 3.11 yr) with BD and 21 controls of comparable age, gender, and IQ. Event-related functional MRI compared neural activation w

Optical computer recognition of facial expressions associated with stress induced by performance demands.

Application of computer vision to track changes in human facial expressions during long-duration spaceflight may be a useful way to unobtrusively detect the presence of stress during critical operations. To develop such an approach, we applied optical computer recognition (OCR) algorithms for detecting facial changes during performance while people experienced both low- and high-stressor performance demands. Workload and social feedback were used to vary performance stress in 60 healthy adults (29 men, 31 women; mean age 30 yr). High-stressor scenarios involved more difficult performance tasks

MR imaging in two cases of subacute denervation change in the muscles of facial expression.

Denervation changes in muscle following damage to cranial and peripheral nerves can be observed on both CT and MR imaging studies. These findings are well described for cranial nerves (CN) V, X, XI, and XII. The CT findings of denervation atrophy due to CN VII dysfunction have been reported. We describe the MR imaging findings in two patients with perineural spread of tumor along CN VII. Both patients showed T2 prolongation and postcontrast enhancement in muscles of facial expression, suggestive of subacute denervation changes.

[The recognition of the facial expression of emotions by patients with endogenous depression (clinico-psychophysiological research)].

The recognition of facial emotional expression in depressed patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and slow progressive schizophrenia (SPS) in acute state and in remission was studied in comparison with healthy persons. All the subjects were right-handed. The drawings of sad, neutral and happy faces followed by masking stimulus were displayed in the center field and in the left or right hemifield of vision on the computer screen for 80 ms. All the depressed patients revealed marked impairment of facial emotion recognition, especially for negative on, and disturbances of hemisphere asymm

Recognition of facial expressions of emotion by persons with mental retardation. A matched comparison study.

Children and adults with mental retardation were tested on their ability to recognize facial expressions of emotion. The sample consisted of 80 children and adults with mental retardation and a control group of 80 nonhandicapped children matched on mental age and gender. Ekman and Friesen's normed photographs of the six basic emotions (anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, and surprise) were used in a recognition task of facial expressions. Subjects were individually read two-sentence stories identifying a specific emotion, presented with a randomized array of the six photographs of the ba

Facial Expression-based Pain Detection: Development and Validation in the Post-anesthesia Care Unit.

BACKGROUND: Objective pain assessment in non-communicative patients remains challenging. Facial expressions are valid indicators of pain; however, manual coding is not practical. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop and validate a real-time facial pain assessment system (FPAS) for detecting pain using deep learning-based facial expression analysis. METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled 50 postoperative patients in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) of a teaching hospital. The system performed parallel processing of facial action units using FaceMesh and emotion recognition using

Multimodal depression recognition and analysis: Facial expression and body posture changes via emotional stimuli.

BACKGROUND: Clinical studies have shown that facial expressions and body posture in depressed patients differ significantly from those of healthy individuals. Combining relevant behavioral features with artificial intelligence technology can effectively improve the efficiency of depression detection, thereby assisting doctors in early identification of patients. This study aims to develop an end-to-end multimodal recognition model combining facial expressions and body posture via deep learning techniques, enabling rapid preliminary screening of depression. METHODS: We invited 146 subjects (73

Hedgehog signaling promotes endoneurial fibroblast migration and Vegf-A expression following facial nerve injury.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve injuries are a common clinical problem which may result in permanent loss of motor or sensory function. A better understanding of the signaling pathways that lead to successful nerve regeneration may help in discovering new therapeutic targets. The Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway plays significant roles in nerve development and regeneration. In a mouse model of facial nerve injury, Hedgehog-responsive fibroblasts increase in number both at the site of injury and within the distal nerve. However, the role of these cells in facial nerve regeneration is not fully unde

Impaired facial expression recognition in patients with social anxiety disorder: a case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate whether social anxiety disorder (SAD) patients have low emotion recognition accuracy, take longer for emotion recognition and tended to interpret a stimulus more negatively than controls. METHODS: Fifty-six SAD patients and 56 healthy controls were participated in this study. We evaluated facial emotion recognition using a computer program in which participants chose one of seven emotions as displayed in each of 55 photographs of faces. We compared the accuracy and reaction times of the patients and controls. We further analysed which emo

Early perceptual anomaly of negative facial expression in depression: An event-related potential study.

Depressed patients have a demonstrated cognitive bias in emotional information processing. However, it is unknown how early perceptual processing is modulated by emotional stimuli in depression. To examine this question, we studied 22 depressed patients and 22 healthy controls performing a cued target-response task with emotional facial expression as the cue. The early perceptual processes were examined using event-related potential (ERP) components, i.e., P1 and N170. Results showed that depressed patients had larger P1 amplitudes than healthy controls, implying that early perceptual abnormal

Effects of facial nerve axotomy on Th2- and Th1-associated chemokine expression in the facial motor nucleus of wild-type and presymptomatic mSOD1 mice.

We have previously demonstrated a neuroprotective mechanism of facial motoneuron (FMN) survival after facial nerve axotomy that is dependent on CD4(+) Th2 cell interaction with peripheral antigen-presenting cells, as well as CNS resident microglia. To investigate this mechanism, we chose to study the Th2-associated chemokine, CCL11, and Th1-associated chemokine, CXCL11, in wild-type and presymptomatic mSOD1 mice after facial nerve axotomy. In this report, the results indicate that CCL11 is constitutively expressed in the uninjured facial motor nucleus, but CXCL11 is not expressed at all. Facia
