[Histopathological study on traumatic facial nerve injury in the rabbits].

Six patterns of injuries (exposure, compression, crush, stretch, division and post-division anastomosis) were analysed in 136 facial nerve buccal branches of 68 rabbits in order to establish the experimental model for study of traumatic facial nerve injury. Changes of histopathology at definite time were studied. The results showed that: exposure can create degree I injury; compression, stretch and crush can create degree II-III injury; the prognosis in anastomosis group was obviously better than unanastomosis group. In moderate to serious injuries, changes of histopathology and ENoG were sync

Iatrogenic facial nerve injury during otologic surgery.

Perhaps the most devastating complication in otologic surgery is that of inadvertent injury to the facial nerve. A review of 22 patients who had sustained an iatrogenic facial nerve injury was conducted. Although the most common procedure being performed during the injury was mastoidectomy (55%), a surprising number of patients had injury during tympanoplasty (14%) or during removal of exostoses (14%). The most common area of injury to the facial nerve in this series was in the tympanic segment. In 79% of the patients, the facial nerve injury was not detected at the time of surgery. All patien

Cervical spine injury in patients with facial skeletal trauma.

The records of 2,555 patients admitted to hospital with facial fractures were reviewed for concomitant neck injury. Cervical spine injury occurred in 1.3% of all patients with facial fractures, the incidence rising to 5.5% with facial fractures resulting only from MVA's. Neck injuries occurred most frequently in the setting of MVA's (85%) and multisystem trauma (70%) and tended to involve two main levels of the cervical spine: C2 (31%) and the two lower cervical vertebrae C6 and C7 (50%). Examination of the pattern of cervical spine injury with respect to the pattern of facial skeletal injury

[Brighton epistaxis balloon: application for cranio-facial injury].

Head injury patients often complicate facial and/or multiple injuries other than cranio-cerebral insults and perplex the emergency staffs. The authors used Brighton epistaxis balloon for such patients with massive nasal bleeding and reported the utility of the balloon not only in such state of emergency but also for a few days to control the hemorrhage mostly caused by craniobasal fractures or rupture of the adjacent vessels. One hundred and twenty-nine patients were transported and hospitalized in Department of Emergency Medicine, University of Tokyo Hospital, Tokyo, Japan during the period f

Age Effects in Facial Fracture Trauma: Disparities in Multisystem Injuries in Non-Fall-Related Trauma.

Background and objective Facial fractures represent a growing concern among an aging population prone to falls. In light of this, this study aimed to investigate differential facial fracture patterns and outcomes based on age effects. Determining the differences between the severity and type of facial fractures in populations of different ages will help guide clinical decision-making when managing patients with facial fractures. Methods This was a single-center study involving trauma registry data, from July 1, 2016, to January 31, 2022. The inclusion criteria were based on the International C

Facial Fractures as a Result of Falls in the Elderly: Concomitant Injuries and Management Strategies.

Mechanical falls are a common cause of facial trauma in the elderly population. It has been shown that the likelihood of sustaining a facial fracture due to a fall or activities of daily life significantly increases with age. Craniomaxillofacial fractures are most common during the first three decades of life; however, elderly patients more frequently require lengthy hospital stays and surgical intervention, and have shown increased complication rates compared with younger patients. The objective of this study was to examine the prevalence of facial fractures secondary to mechanical falls in t

Ocular injuries in 367 patients with middle and upper third facial trauma: experience in Tehran.

Ocular injuries are commonly associated with facial injuries. I provide a retrospective study of 367 patients who sustained severe major ocular injuries associated with middle and upper third facial injuries. These patients were selected from 1,608 patients who sustained different types of craniomaxillofacial injuries over a 7-year period (1984 to 1990). The characteristics of the ocular injuries sustained were related to the cause of the facial trauma. More than 52.04% of severe ocular injuries were associated with isolated lateral midface injuries, 42.5% were associated with middle-third inj

Do patients with facial trauma to the orbito-zygomatic region also sustain significant ocular injuries?

A retrospective study of orbito-zygomatic injuries presenting to eye casualty over 3-year period revealed the majority of patients with pure orbital "blow-out' fractures had no other associated ocular abnormalities and 96% of these patients had a visual acuity of 6/9 or greater at discharge. In contrast only 74% of patients with multiple facial fractures had a visual acuity of 6/9 or greater at discharge. Severe ocular trauma was uncommon in patients with orbito-zygomatic injuries. Decrease in visual acuity was the main clinical finding accompanying significant eye injury. Early ophthalmic ass

Establishment of a facial nerve trunk crush injury model and evaluation of facial nerve self-healing in rats.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: To facilitate further investigation into the mechanisms of facial nerve regeneration, a simple and reliable model of facial nerve crush injury is essential. Nevertheless, the establishment of such models lacks standardization and repeatability, while the healing capacity of the nerve is often overlooked, potentially affecting future studies. METHODS: We made facial nerve trunk crush injury models with different pressing times and detected the changes from the distal nerves to the motoneurons via behavior analysis, electrophysiological test, and histomorphometry analysis.
