Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinomas are rare neoplasms but highly malignant and aggressive. We are reporting the case of a 75 year-old female who had related recurrent epistaxis, facial pain and progressive nasal obstruction. The clinical data collected by the exploration joint to CT showed us the presence of a tumoral mass located in the right nasal fossa and homolateral maxillary sinus, eroding structures around. Its biopsy was informed as undifferentiated carcinoma and the patient was sent to Oncology Department, where she was treated by Radiotherapy (68 Gy) and weekly carboplatin during

A 46-year-old male with xeroderma pigmentosum developed an intracranial malignant schwannoma originating from the second branch of the left trigeminal nerve. The tumor was subtotally removed and postoperative radiation therapy given, but the tumor recurred twice over 3 years, and extended to the third branch of the left trigeminal nerve and the ipsilateral facial nerve. Radical surgery and radiation therapy finally achieved a cure. This is the first case of malignant trigeminal schwannoma with xeroderma pigmentosum, although various other internal neoplasms including central nervous system tum

Noonan syndrome (NS) is an autosomal dominant disease caused by aberrant up-regulated signaling through RAS GTPase. It is characterized by facial dysmorphisms, short stature, congenital heart defects, malformations of rib cage bones, bleeding problems, learning difficulties, or mild intellectual disability. Additional intracranial findings in NS patients include tumors, midline anomalies, and malformations of cortical development. In this report, we present the case of a young female patient, with a known diagnosis of Noonan syndrome that in complete well being developed two brain lesions, in

BACKGROUND: Angiosarcomas are rare soft tissue malignant tumors with dismal prognosis. Head and neck involvement is uncommon (5%) and usually affects the scalp or facial skin.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We present the case of an inferior lip mucosal low-grade angiosarcoma in a 15-year-old boy treated exclusively with surgery. One and a half years after treatment, the patient was free of signs of recurrence. Prompt and accurate diagnosis with adequate imaging modalities and multidisciplinary treatment are crucial for optimal management of these neoplasms.
CONCLUSION: Lip mucosal involvement is exce

BACKGROUND: The Gasserian ganglion is a well-known target for facial pain management, and patients with cancer present an anatomical challenge owing to tumor progression or treatment itself. Computed tomography (CT) is an alternative method for guiding these procedures.
METHODS: This was an observational retrospective analysis of patients with cancer-related facial pain who underwent CT-guided Gasserian ganglion interventions using local anesthetics, local anesthetics with steroids, phenol, and radiofrequency. Demographic, clinical, and procedure-related variables were collected from January

Pigmented facial macules are common on sun damage skin. The diagnosis of early stage lentigo maligna (LM) and lentigo maligna melanoma (LMM) is challenging. Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) has been proven to increase diagnostic accuracy of facial lesions. A total of 154 pigmented facial macules, retrospectively collected, were evaluated for the presence of already-described RCM features and new parameters depicting aspects of the follicle. Melanocytic nests, roundish pagetoid cells, follicular infiltration, bulgings from the follicles and many bright dendrites and infiltration of the hai

The differential diagnosis of trigeminal neuropathy is quite challenging because there is a significant variety of causes for the disorder. We reviewed our cases of trigeminal neuropathy by studying first the initial manifestations in order to evaluate their underlying disorders. Sixty-four patients with trigeminal neuropathy came to our Out-Patients clinic. We have excluded from our analysis any patients with atypical pain, facial migraine, nasal sinusitis, pain from inflammation of dental pulp or facial bones, and pretrigeminal neuralgia. In 53 cases (83%) we identified the causes; 35 of the

Parotid gland agenesis is a rare congenital anomaly with fewer than 30 cases reported in the literature. It can present with xerostomia, facial asymmetry, recurrent infections, or may be entirely asymptomatic. Due to its rarity and potential to mimic other pathological conditions, especially in cases of facial asymmetry, awareness is crucial for accurate diagnosis. We report the case of a 39-year-old man referred to our clinic for routine follow-up of a thyroid nodule. The patient had no history of systemic illness or symptoms related to salivary gland dysfunction. During neck ultrasonography,

PURPOSE: Warthin tumors (WT) are the second most common benign parotid gland neoplasms. They can occur as synchronous or metachronous lesions in 6-10% of cases. This study aims to compare the complication rate in 224 patients who underwent extracapsular dissection (ECD) or superficial parotidectomy (SP) for the treatment of a WT.
METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted at the Department of Maxillo-Facial Surgery at the University of Naples "Federico II" from February 2002 to December 2018 on a group of patients who underwent surgical treatment for WT. The type of surgical technique wa

Middle ear neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are uncommon neoplasms that exhibit both epithelial and neuroendocrine differentiation. Aberrant desmin expression in middle ear NET has not been documented previously and may create a diagnostic pitfall due to morphologic overlap with myogenic and rhabdoid tumors. A 52-year-old man presented with right ear pain, fullness, and facial deviation. Imaging revealed a soft-tissue mass involving the middle ear cavity and the mastoid air cells, with ossicular erosion. Histopathology showed an infiltrative neoplasm arranged in nests, trabeculae, cords, and pseud

The present study describes the potential usefulness of ultrastructural morphometry in diagnosis. Ultrastructural morphometric criteria were applied to the evaluation of a poorly differentiated neuroendocrine neoplasm of the nasal cavity that was initially thought to be a Burkitt's-like lymphoma (BLL). Although the nasal lesion in question failed to stain with over 50 cell lineage-relevant antibodies, it did stain for vimentin (an intermediate filament protein) and Ki-67 (a nuclear antigen associated with cell proliferation). Routine electron microscopy revealed a primitive neoplasm with abund

Neoplasms of the mandibular ascending ramus and condyle cause facial asymmetry, trismus, malocclusion, swelling in the temporomandibular joint area, and pain. Conventional surgeries require an external incision, with a risk of facial nerve injury and leaving a scar. This study aimed to establish a minimally invasive approach for mandibular ramus-condyle tumour resection, using intraoperative navigation and endoscopes. The safety and feasibility were assessed by cadaveric dissection. Nine patients with osteomas or osteochondromas occurring from the mandibular ascending ramus and condyle were in

Desmoid tumors (DTs) are rare benign neoplasms but cause significant mortality due to their locally infiltrative nature and propensity to recur. Most DTs occur in the extremities and trunk. Head and neck DTs are uncommon but can have a significant impact on a patient's facial appearance. However, there is limited information available about the diagnosis and treatment for multiple DTs located in head and neck. We report the first case of multiple maxillofacial DTs in a 14-year-old boy. He had painless submandibular masses for three months and MRI imaging reveals abnormal high signals on the su

Free myocutaneous latissimus dorsi transplants are exceptionally used in cervicofacial surgery. The authors have performed an anatomical study of 23 non-embalmed subjects, using injections of neoprene latex and barium sulfate into the axillary artery and dye injections. Dissections, arteriographs and corrosion show that the lower scapular pedicle is constant, with an average length of 9.5 cm and a caliber that is sufficient for vasuclar microsurgery. Eight patients with large T4 cervicocephalic neoplasms were operated, including two with tongue tumors, one with a tumor of the oropharynx, two o

The double-Z rhombic technique of repair of excisional defects is characterized by borrowing the required tissue from two nonadjacent opposite sides of the defect. Most other flaps borrow the required tissue from a single adjacent region or all adjacent directions. The "sharing" of tissue from two opposite regions minimizes tension in that direction, while not borrowing from the remaining regions prevents the distortion of anatomic landmarks located along that direction. The orientation of the final scar and direction of tissue tension can be controlled by rotating the rhombic defect about its

Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic idiopathic skin disorder that has a predilection for sun-exposed areas. Although rare, there is a possibility that chronic LP lesions could progress to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), a non-melanocytic malignant skin neoplasm. Cumulative exposure to ultraviolet radiation, particularly in individuals with lighter skin tones, is one of the leading risk factors for cutaneous SCC (cSCC). In this report, we present a case of a 79-year-old male patient who was diagnosed with a moderately differentiated cSCC with facial localization. This condition developed on the back
