A new familial observation of Cohen syndrome in two sisters is reported. Both children exhibited the typical features of Cohen syndrome, i.e. obesity, hypotonia, mental deficiency and a dysmorphic syndrome mainly involving the facies and extremities. More accurate delineation of the nosologic limits of this syndrome is ensured by a critical review of the 17 observations published in the medical literature, which include 9 familial cases: the contribution of subsequent observations to the initial description is pointed out. Attention is drawn to the unusual course of the obesity which typically

Impaired growth is common in patients with glycogen storage disease (GSD), who also may have "cherubic" facies similar to the "moon" facies of Cushing syndrome (CS). An infant presented with moon facies, growth failure, and obesity. Laboratory evaluation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis was consistent with CS. He was subsequently found to have liver disease, hypoglycemia, and a pathogenic variant in PHKA2, leading to the diagnosis of GSD type IXa. The cushingoid appearance, poor linear growth and hypercortisolemia improved after treatment to prevent recurrent hypoglycemia. We s

Three sisters with congenital glaucoma, peculiar facies and mild skeletal anomalies are described. It is concluded that such an aggregate of anomalies probably corresponds to a 'new' autosomal recessive syndrome.

A common form of chondrodysplasia punctata has been defined by characteristic clinical and radiologic features in 23 patients seen in Melbourne. The patients presented during infancy because of failure to thrive, apparent mental retardation, and/or unusual appearance. The typical facies is almost diagnostic, and the diagnosis is completed by finding punctate calcification in the calcaneum in lateral radiographs of the feet, and sometimes in other sites. Growth and developmental progress improved during childhood and the final outcome seems likely to comprise low normal height and intelligence

We report a 22-year-old man with hydrocephalus caused by aqueductal stenosis. The patient was diagnosed with Kabuki make-up syndrome based on associated findings such as a peculiar facies, postnatal growth deficiency, brachydactyly of the fifth fingers, undescended testes, and malrotation of the colon. Kabuki make-up syndrome, recognized in Japan in 1981, is characterized by five cardinal manifestations: a peculiar facies, skeletal anomalies, dermatoglyphic anomalies, slight to moderate mental retardation, and postnatal dwarfism. Neurological anomalies have been reported to include neonatal hy

Costello syndrome is characterised by postnatal growth deficiency, coarse facies, redundant skin on the neck, palms, soles, and fingers, dark skin, acanthosis nigricans, and papillomata. The natural history evolves in two phases, a severe failure to thrive during the first months contrasting with a normal weight gain in later life. Cardiomyopathy is frequent but other visceral involvement is rare. Mild to moderate mental retardation is usual and most patients exhibit a characteristic sociable and friendly personality. The pathogenesis and molecular basis of the syndrome are unknown and the dia

A syndrome with distinctive facies, poor muscle tone, absent deep tendon reflexes, tapered fingers, excessive fingerprint arches, genu valgum and mild-moderate mental retardation has occurred in four males in two generations of a white family of European ancestry. The facies are characterised by square configuration, tented upper lip, and thickening of the helices, upper eyelids, and alae nasi. At birth and at maturity, growth (head circumference, height, weight) of affected males is comparable to or greater than unaffected male sibs. Moderate impairment of cognitive function was documented (I

A data set of 76 water samples are obtained from surface and sub-surface water bodies to investigate chemical parameters and stable isotopic signatures in order to drive factors leading to fluoride (F-) contamination in groundwater of parts of Jamui district, India. Hydrochemical facies reveals that F- concentration is lower in Ca2+-HCO3- facies representative of recharge area, while discharge area has a tendency towards Na+-HCO3- facies with elevated F- concentration. The ionic ratios Na+/Ca2+>1, Na+/Cl->1, (Ca2++Mg2+)/HCO3-<1, Na++K+ = 0.5TZ+ and Ca2++Mg2+ = TZ+ witness silicate weathering b

Femoral-facial syndrome (FFS, OMIM 134780), also known as femoral hypoplasia-unusual face syndrome, is a rare sporadic syndrome associated with maternal diabetes, and comprising femoral hypoplasia/agenesis and a distinct facies characterized by micrognathia, cleft palate, and other minor dysmorphisms. The evaluation of 14 unpublished Brazilian patients, prompted us to make an extensive literature review comparing both sets of data. From 120 previously reported individuals with FFS, 66 were excluded due to: not meeting the inclusion criteria (n = 21); not providing sufficient data to ascertain

Deletion of the short arm of chromosome 18 produces a highly variable phenotype. Mental retardation, short stature, and an abnormal facies are invariably present. About 9% of patients with this syndrome have cardiac pathology.

Robinow syndrome (RS) is a well-recognized Mendelian disorder known to demonstrate both autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive inheritance. Typical manifestations include short stature, characteristic facies, and skeletal anomalies. Recessive inheritance has been associated with mutations in ROR2 while dominant inheritance has been observed for mutations in WNT5A, DVL1, and DVL3. Through trio whole genome sequencing, we identified a homozygous frameshifting single nucleotide deletion in WNT5A in a previously reported, deceased infant with a unique constellation of features comprising a 46,

Alagille syndrome (arteriohepatic dysplasia, AHD) is a well defined genetic disorder with five major features: distinctive facies, cardiovascular anomalies, paucity of interlobular bile ducts (PILBD), ocular anomalies and minor skeletal malformations. Repeatedly, structural anomalies of 20p, in most cases a deletion, have been described in patients with Alagille syndrome. We report a three generation family with AHD presenting with typical facial dysmorphology, cardiac and ocular lesions but without clinical signs of liver manifestation. Two infants died from a complex cardiovascular malformat

The aim of this study is to classify and analyse macroscopic aspects of the brain and facies in holoprosencephaly. The six cases reported were examined at the Department of Pathology of FFFCMPA. Data observed in this study are compared to those registered in the literature.

Bilateral total renal dysplasia is an extremely rare congenital anomaly associated with Potter's facies. We report an autopsy case of a stillborn male child. Histopathology is showing persistence of structures not seen in normal development.

An asymmetrical crying facies due to hypoplasia or absence of the depressor anguli oris muscle (DAOM) was observed in 23 infants and children. The cases were divided into two groups. Group 1 consisted of 12 patients who had associated cardiac abnormalities. In group 2 were 11 patients who either had other non-cardiac abnormalities (6) or no other abnormalities (5). The associated cardiac anomalies recorded in the literature are reviewed and 2 infants in this series are reported with abnormalities not previously described. The results of chromosomal analysis have generally been found to be norm

Schinzel-Giedion syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by coarse facies, midface retraction, hypertrichosis, multiple skeletal anomalies, and cardiac and renal malformations. Craniofacial abnormalities of this syndrome sometimes resemble a storage or metabolic disease. The pathogenesis of the disease remains unknown. The objective of this report was to emphasize the importance of congenital bilateral hydronephrosis for the diagnosis of Schinzel-Giedion syndrome. We describe the first Brazilian case of a newborn with typical facies, generalized hypertrichosis, cardiac an
