Farmers' motivational profiles for providing outdoor access to pigs.

Although in the minority, outdoor pig farming systems are experiencing a resurgence of interest in several countries such as France, systems that could contribute to the transition towards sustainable agriculture. Understanding farmers' motivations for adopting sustainable practices is crucial for transforming agricultural systems. Hence, this study aimed at identifying the motivational profiles of French farmers who chose to raise pigs on farms offering outdoor access to their animals. A total of 20 semi-structured interviews, lasting 1.25-2.25 h, were conducted among French farmers who raise

Resilience of Belgian Cattle Farmers Towards Infectious Diseases Outbreaks.

The study addresses the growing risk of infectious disease outbreaks in livestock by developing and applying a composite resilience index to evaluate the adaptive capacity of Belgian cattle farmers in implementing biosecurity measures (BSMs). The framework integrates three core dimensions, that is, implementation, feasibility and effectiveness, across three priority diseases representing distinct epidemiological profiles and transmission routes like brucellosis, bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) and foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). The analysis combines three data sources as follows: (i) a farm-level

Association Between COPD Symptoms and Psychological Distress Among Farmers.

BACKGROUND: Farmers have an increased risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and psychological distress. The potential role of psychological distress in worsening COPD symptoms has been reported among the general population, but no studies have examined this relationship among farmers with COPD, which is the purpose of this study. METHODS: This study used the data from the 2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). Farmers reporting both psychological distress and COPD symptoms were included in this study (n = 239). Both unadjusted and adjusted logistic

Immune response of Brazilian farmers exposed to multiple pesticides.

Occupational exposure to pesticides has been identified as a factor that predisposes to disorders of the immune system. Immunosuppression, autoimmunity, cancer of various organs and other diseases in people who apply these products have been reported by the studies. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between occupational exposure to pesticides and the immunological profile in 43 farmers exposed to mixtures of pesticides for at least 15 years. A control group composed of 30 individuals without a history of occupational exposure to pesticides was also evaluated. Peripheral blood sa

Decreased Sensitization to Aeroallergens among Southwestern Iranian Male Farmers.

Farmers are usually exposed to various inhaled allergens like pollens, mites, molds, and animal dander in their working environment which may lead to allergic rhinitis, asthma and urticaria. The purpose of this study was to identify sensitization to various aeroallergens in farmers and their occupational allergy symptoms. This cross sectional study included 103 male farmers and 100 non-farmer healthy controls. The work-related symptoms of farmers were recorded with a questionnaire. Spirometry and skin prick tests with 15 commercial allergen extracts were performed in both farmers and controls.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in Farmers: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a significant public health problem but it is unclear whether agricultural work causes an increased risk of disease. The aim of this review was to study COPD risk among farmers and analyze occupational exposures in agricultural workplaces. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted to identify epidemiological studies investigating COPD prevalence in farmers. RESULTS: In the 14 studies reviewed, COPD prevalence ranged from 3% to 68% due to different characteristics of study population, working activities, case definition/di

Tapeworm control practices by sheep farmers in Northern Ireland.

A questionnaire to obtain information on tapeworm control practices was sent to 252 sheep farmers in Northern Ireland (NI) in 2012. Replies were received from 228 flock owners. Most farmers considered that tapeworm infections had less impact on productivity than gastrointestinal nematodes, flukes and ectoparasites. The majority of respondents (61.8%) did not treat for tapeworms. Of those that did, the average number of treatments given per year was 2.3, with some owners treating up to 6 times a year. The highest percentages of treatments were given over the period May-July. Benzimidazole compo

Whole body vibration exposure patterns in Canadian prairie farmers.

Whole body vibration is a significant physical risk factor associated with low back pain. This study assessed farmers' exposure to whole body vibration on the Canadian prairies according to ISO 2631-1. Eighty-seven vibration measurements were collected with a triaxial accelerometer embedded in a rubber seat pad at the operator-seat interface of agricultural machinery, including tractors, combines, pickup trucks, grain trucks, sprayers, swathers, all-terrain vehicles, and skid steers. Whole body vibration was highest in the vertical axis, with a mean (range) frequency-weighted root mean squared

Community support systems for farmers who live with disability.

To return to farming following the onset of a disabling injury or health condition is predicated on a supportive environment for the farm owner-operator. The purpose of this study was to examine barriers and facilitators of returning to work after an injury or acquired disability, and to identify community supports (formal and informal) needed and available to farmers. This was a qualitative study using a participatory action research approach that involved a research team, an advisory group of seven stakeholder participants and semistructured interviews with farmers, their spouses, and servic

Asthma increase among farmers: a 12-year follow-up.

Respiratory disease is a well known health hazard for farmers, but the long-term prognosis is less well known. This is a 12-year follow-up of an investigation of Swedish farmers, most of them dairy farmers. A questionnaire was mailed to all 418 farmers who were alive of the farmers originally participating in 1982. They were invited to an interview, spirometry, and blood sampling. Ninety-one per cent (380) of the farmers, 321 men and 59 women, responded to the questionnaire. The mean age was 56 years for the men and 55 years for the women. Of the group, 10% were smokers, 25% ex-smokers, and 65

Lung function and respiratory symptoms in male Palestinian farmers.

In a cross-sectional study of 250 farmers aged 22 to 77 years, of whom 36.4% are smokers, the authors aimed at describing lung function and respiratory symptoms and to estimate associations with exposures to pesticides and dust. Lung function was measured using a spirometer. Respiratory symptoms and exposure levels were self-reported based on a modified standardized questionnaire. Mean forced vital capacity (FVC) was 4.20 L (SD = 0.93 L), 95.51% of predicted as compared to European standards. Mean forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV(1)) was 3.28 L (SD = 0.80 L), 91.05% of predicted. Th

[Giant bladder calculus in two male farmers in Madagascar].

We report two cases of giant calculus in two male farmers in 1999. They were operated on in the urologic ward by lithocystotomy. Infrared spectrophotometric analysis, carried out in Bordeaux, gave us the main components of the stones. These stones weighed respectively 350 g and 450 g. Research of common aetiology such as vesical neck stricture, prostatic hypertrophy, urethral stricture and urinary bladder diverticula was unsuccessful in case of the first patient; in the opposite, the second one had vesical diverticula discovered operatively. But two phenomena came out from this aetiologic inve

Cytogenetic biomonitoring of pesticide-exposed farmers in central Italy.

The frequency of sister chromatid exchanges (SCE) and micronuclei in peripheral blood lymphocytes was evaluated in 48 agricultural workers and 50 control subjects living in central Italy. No difference in SCE frequency was found between the control and the exposed populations with respect to age, smoking habits, and duration of exposure, although smokers, both farmers and controls, had a higher SCE frequency than nonsmokers. However, the comparison of proliferative rate index values found in the two groups revealed a significant decrease in the activation capability of lymphocytes in the pesti

Health effects of organic dust exposure in dairy farmers.

Exposure to farm dust may cause asthma, rhinitis, allergic alveolitis, organic dust toxic syndrome, and chronic bronchitis. Febrile reactions to inhaled dusts are common and are usually of a toxic rather than an allergic type. Some evidence indicates that dairy farmers may have an increased prevalence of chronic bronchitis, allergic asthma, rhinitis, and chronic airflow limitation, but this has not been conclusively shown. Storage mites and cow dander are important allergens in dairy farming. Inflammation of airways may in part be caused by immediate or delayed hypersensitivity. Other mechanis

Occupational dermatoses in farmers growing okra (Hibiscus esculentus L.).

By questionnaire survey, 32 out of 52 workers (61.5%) reported previous or current skin diseases from okra cultivation. The sites of skin lesions were mainly the arms, fingers and fingertips. Positive patch test reactions with preparations of okra leaves or immature pods in 111 workers, compared to 63 control subjects, were significantly higher in okra workers than in controls (p less than 0.01), ranging from 9.8 to 30.0%. 37 out of 111 workers (33.3%) were diagnosed as having allergic contact dermatitis (n = 17; 15.3%) and irritant contact dermatitis (n = 18; 16.2%) from okra cultivation.

The fluctuant nature of precipitating antibodies in dairy farmers.

Four hundred and forty five of 888 dairy farmers studied in an epidemiological survey four years previously were restudied to determine change in precipitins and in clinical features. Subjects answered the same questionnaire, which was filled in by the same nurse in the same winter months, and had blood withdrawn for precipitin analysis (double diffusion technique). Of the 445 subjects retested, 48 (10.8%) had been precipitin positive at the first study; of these, 34 remained positive four years later and 14 had reverted to negative. Twenty eight subjects previously negative for precipitins ha
