Alterations of Fat and Ketone Body Metabolism in ALS and SMA-A Prospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerdosis (ALS) and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) are motor neuron diseases associated with distinct metabolic alterations. ALS patients feature an increased resting energy expenditure (REE) causing weight loss and cachexia. In SMA, a disturbed utilization of free fatty acids has been described. These metabolic alterations negatively affect prognosis in both diseases. The objective of this study was to further characterize these changes to identify potential therapeutic targets. METHODS: Between 11/2020 and 08/2022, 112 ALS patients, 77 SMA patients, and 50 co

The influence of body fat content and distribution on bone mass in healthy Chinese adults.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported a close relationship between body mass index (BMI) and bone mineral density (BMD). However, the effects of fat on bone mass remain controversial, particularly for fat tissue distribution. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between regional fat percentage and BMD using a population-based database. METHODS: This study included participants who were referred to the Department of Radio Diagnosis for dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan from January 2018 to December 2020. The relationships between BMI and regional fat percentage

Percentage of body fat is associated with increased risk of diverticulosis: A cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Obesity has been indicated to be a risk factor of diverticulosis. However, plausible relationship remained controversial. This cross-sectional study elucidated the association between percentage of body fat and the risk of diverticulosis. METHODS: The study was conducted at a single medical center in Taiwan from 2000-2016 which enrolled 5557 adults with age above 20 years old receiving a health examination including self-reported questionnaires, measurement of percentage of body fat (PBF), blood test and colonoscopy at the Tri-Service General Hospital (TSGH). Logistic regressions

Effects of Walking Speed on Total and Regional Body Fat in Healthy Postmenopausal Women.

INTRODUCTION: This study had two aims: (1) To confirm the efficacy of exercise speed and impulse (session duration at a given speed) to produce total and abdominal fat loss in postmenopausal women, and (2) compare the exercise speed and impulse necessary for the stimulation of fat loss to the suppression of bone mineral loss. Of special interest was to compare these parameters of exercise on fat loss in the same study and with the same subjects where they were found to suppress bone mineral loss. We hypothesized that (1) more total fat will be lost with slow walking and a longer impulse than w

Coronary Endothelial Dysfunction in People Living With HIV Is Related to Body Fat Distribution.

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV (PLWH) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) are at increased risk of atherosclerotic disease. Abnormal adipose distribution is common in PLWH and may contribute to atherosclerosis. Because coronary artery endothelial function (CEF) is impaired in early atherosclerosis, predicts future cardiovascular events, and is reduced in PLWH, we investigated associations between body fat distribution and CEF in PLWH. SETTING: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: PLWH on stable ART underwent MRI to quantify CEF, measured as change in coronary cross-sectional area from rest to

Association of body composition fat parameters and breast density in mammography by menopausal status.

We investigated the relationship between body fat-driven obesity and breast fat density in mammography according to menopausal status. We retrospectively analyzed 8537 women (premenopausal, n = 4351; postmenopausal, n = 4186). Body fat parameters included BMI (body mass index), waist circumference (WC), waist-hip ratio (WHR), fat mass index (FMI), Percentage of body fat (PBF), and visceral fat area (VFA). Body fat-driven obesity was defined as follows: overall obesity, BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2; central obesity, WC > 85 cm; abdominal obesity, WHR > 0.85; excessive FMI, the highest quartile (Q4) of FMI; e

A systematic review indicates an association between birth weight and body fat in childhood.

AIM: To summarise the existing evidence regarding the body fat of small or large for gestation subjects, evaluated from birth up to 18 years of age. METHODS: The PRISMA guidelines were adopted for the current systematic review, including studies having evaluated body fat with bioelectrical impedance analysis, air displacement plethysmography, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry or magnetic resonance imaging. RESULTS: A total of 31 studies was included. The balance of evidence suggests that small for gestation infants have decreased fat mass at birth; postnatally they experience increased adipos

Overview of Epidemiology and Contribution of Obesity and Body Fat Distribution to Cardiovascular Disease: An Update.

Obesity is recognized as a heterogeneous condition in which individuals with similar body mass index may have distinct metabolic and cardiovascular risk profiles. Susceptibility to obesity-related cardiometabolic complications is not solely mediated by overall body fat mass, but is largely dependent upon individual differences in regional body fat distribution and ability of subcutaneous adipose tissue to expand. The present review will discuss to what extent the individual variation in body fat distribution is one of the clinical key variables explaining the metabolic heterogeneity of obesity

Association of Percentage Body Fat and Metabolic Health in Offspring of Patients with Cardiovascular Diseases.

Family history was one of the major risk factors for developing adverse health outcomes such as metabolic syndrome (MetS), type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypertension (HTN). Our aim was to examine the relationship between different family histories and cardiometabolic events, including DM, stroke, myocardial infarction (MI), and HTN. Participants who attended the health examinations at the Tri-Service General Hospital from 2010 to 2016 were enrolled in the study and were categorized into four groups by representing different family history. A multivariable logistic regression model was used

High fat diet blunts the effects of leptin on ventilation and on carotid body activity.

KEY POINTS: Leptin plays a role in the control of breathing, acting mainly on central nervous system; however, leptin receptors have been recently shown to be expressed in the carotid body (CB), and this finding suggests a physiological role for leptin in the regulation of CB function. Leptin increases minute ventilation in both basal and hypoxic conditions in rats. It increases the frequency of carotid sinus nerve discharge in basal conditions, as well as the release of adenosine from the CB. However, in a metabolic syndrome animal model, the effects of leptin in ventilatory control, carotid

European Code against Cancer 4th Edition: Obesity, body fatness and cancer.

It is estimated that over half the population of the European Union (EU) is overweight or obese due to an imbalance between energy expenditure and energy intake; this is related to an obesogenic environment of sociocultural, economic and marketing challenges to the control of body weight. Excess body fat is associated with nine cancer sites - oesophagus, colorectum, gall bladder, pancreas, postmenopausal breast, endometrium, ovary, kidney and prostate (advanced) - and 4-38% of these cancers (depending on site and gender) can be attributed to overweight/obesity status. Metabolic alterations whi

Development of predictive equations for total and segmental body fat in HIV-seropositive patients.

OBJECTIVES: The central point of the HIV lipodystrophy syndrome is changes in body composition that mainly involve the loss of fat in the limbs and face (lipoatrophy) and/or fat gain in the abdominal region and back neck (lipohypertrophy). Currently, the determination of fat per body segment in this group can be obtained by imaging methods such as dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) but not by methods that would be more feasible in the practical clinics. The aim of this study was to develop equations to estimate total body fat and fat in each segment using anthropometric and bioelectrical i

Posttraumatic fat necrosis presenting as prepatellar loose bodies in an adolescent football player.

A 16-year-old high school football player presented with 4 months of anterior knee pain and small, mobile, prepatellar "lumps" after falling onto an opponent's cleat. He reported knee pain primarily during knee flexion and direct pressure during squatting and kneeling. Knee radiographs were unremarkable. Ultrasonography revealed multiple, freely mobile, subcutaneous nodules of variable size and echogenicity in the prepatellar region. Analysis of magnetic resonance imaging suggested possible fat necrosis but was nondiagnostic. The patient opted for surgical exploration, at which time multiple,

Body fat distribution and risk factors for fibrosis in patients with alcoholic liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Only a small proportion of alcoholic patients develop advanced liver disease, suggesting that factors other than alcohol intake may influence alcoholic liver disease (ALD) progression. We have shown that body mass index (BMI) is an independent risk factor for fibrosis in alcohol-induced liver disease and that adipose tissue inflammation is correlated with liver lesions in alcoholic patients. The aim of this study was to determine whether visceral adipose tissue, as assessed by abdominal height measurement, affected individual susceptibility to fibrosis in alcoholic patients. METHO

Reproducibility of DXA estimations of body fat in HIV lipodystrophy: implications for clinical research.

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) estimates of body fat are increasingly used for the evaluation of human immunodeficiency virus lipodystrophy (HIV LD); however, limited data are available on their reproducibility. This information is essential for using this tool as an end point in treatment trials or as a diagnostic tool. This study evaluates the reproducibility of DXA body fat estimation in HIV-positive subjects with and without lipodystrophy. Thirty subjects representing a spectrum of severity of fat redistribution underwent same-day repeat whole-body DXA scans (Hologic QDR 4500A scan

Changes in body fat measured by DEXA in patients taking different formulations of stavudine.

BACKGROUND: Lipoatrophy is a frequent complication of chronic stavudine therapy. Stavudine extended release formulation (stavudine ER) gives lower peak and higher trough levels than the immediate release formulation (stavudine IR), and we hypothesized that the lower peak might result in less lipoatrophy. OBJECTIVE: To compare the rate of peripheral lipoatrophy between patients taking stavudine ER and stavudine IR. METHOD: Body composition was measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) every 6 months for 18 months in 29 patients taking either stavudine ER or IR as part of a randomize
