Comparative Analysis of Epidermal Differentiation Genes of Crocodilians Suggests New Models for the Evolutionary Origin of Avian Feather Proteins.

The epidermis of amniotes forms a protective barrier against the environment and the differentiation program of keratinocytes, the main cell type in the epidermis, has undergone specific alterations in the course of adaptation of amniotes to a broad variety of environments and lifestyles. The epidermal differentiation complex (EDC) is a cluster of genes expressed at late stages of keratinocyte differentiation in both sauropsids and mammals. In the present study, we identified and analyzed the crocodilian equivalent of the EDC. The gene complement of the EDC of both the American alligator and t

South-south collaboration on HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment research: when birds of a feather rarely flock together.

BACKGROUND: South-south collaboration on health and development research is a critical mechanism for social and economic progress. It allows sharing and replicating experiences to find a "southern solution" to meet shared health challenges, such as access to adequate HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment. This study aimed to generate evidence on the dynamics of south-south collaboration in HIV/AIDS research, which could ultimately inform stakeholders on the progress and nature of collaboration towards increased research capacities in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). METHODS: Bibliometric

An investigation into the rapid removal of tetracycline using multilayered graphene-phase biochar derived from waste chicken feather.

This study investigated the removal of tetracycline (TC) using multilayered graphene-phase biochar (MGB) derived from waste chicken feather. MGB was produced through a two-stage carbonization and KOH-activation method. MGB was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Raman spectra, Zeta potential and elemental analysis. Various chemical functional groups were demonstrated on the surface of MGB. MGB was featured by a very large BET surface area of 1838m2/g. A rapid equilibrium (within 30s) and an ultrahigh r

Infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV) vaccine intake evaluation by detection of virus amplification in feather pulps of vaccinated chickens.

Infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) is a respiratory disease of poultry caused by an alphaherpesvirus, ILTV. The live vaccine is applied worldwide by drinking water or by the respiratory route, and by the vent application in Israel. No system of direct evaluation of the efficacy of vaccination exists today, except of antibody elicitation, which is an indirect indication of vaccination intake and might happen due to environment exposure. We suggest for the first time an assay for evaluating the accuracy of the vaccination process by spotting the spread of the live vaccine systemically, namely by

Comparisons of host specificity in feather louse genera (Insecta: Phthiraptera: Philopteridae) parasitizing gulls (Aves: Laridae: Larus).

Data from gene sequences and morphological structures were collected for the gull feather lice, Saemundssonia lari, Quadraceps punctatus, and Q. ornatus, parasitizing Larus crassirostris and L. schistisagus. Saemundssonia lari was collected from both gull species, and no detectable morphological and genetic differences were found between lice collected from the two different hosts. In contrast, Q. punctatus was only collected from L. crassirostris, whereas Q. ornatus was only collected from L. schistisagus. The two Quadraceps species were genetically highly divergent, and body-size differences

Adsorption of ammonium and phosphate by feather protein based semi-interpenetrating polymer networks hydrogel as a controlled-release fertilizer.

A new feather protein-grafted poly(potassium acrylate)/polyvinyl alcohol (FP-g-PKA/PVA) semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPNs) hydrogel was produced through graft copolymerization with FP as a basic macromolecular skeletal material, acrylic acid as a monomer and PVA as a semi-IPNs polymer. The adsorption of ammonium and phosphate ions from aqueous solution using the new hydrogel as N and P controlled-release fertilizer with water-retention capacity was studied. The effects of pH value, concentration, contact time and ion strength on NH4+ and PO3-4 removal by FP-g-PKA/PVA semi-IPNs

Aerodynamic characteristics of a feathered dinosaur measured using physical models. Effects of form on static stability and control effectiveness.

We report the effects of posture and morphology on the static aerodynamic stability and control effectiveness of physical models based on the feathered dinosaur, [Formula: see text]Microraptor gui, from the Cretaceous of China. Postures had similar lift and drag coefficients and were broadly similar when simplified metrics of gliding were considered, but they exhibited different stability characteristics depending on the position of the legs and the presence of feathers on the legs and the tail. Both stability and the function of appendages in generating maneuvering forces and torques changed

Feather mites and internal parasites in small ground finches (Geospiza fuliginosa, Emberizidae) from the Galapagos Islands (Equador).

During a parasite survey, we collected data on the presence and distribution of feather mites, intestinal parasites, and blood parasites of small ground finches (Geospiza fuliginosa) from 4 islands in the Galapagos. We recorded 4 species of feather mites, with the most common species, Trouessartia geospiza, present on the majority (77% [308/400]) of individuals. Birds with high loads of T. geospiza came from larger islands and had higher body masses. We identified 3 species of intestinal Isospora (Isospora fragmenta, Isospora temeraria, and Isospora exigua) in fecal samples that showed a diurn

The feather holes on the barn swallow Hirundo rustica and other small passerines are probably caused by Brueelia spp. lice.

Barn swallows Hirundo rustica often have characteristic feather holes on wing and tail feathers. During the past 15 yr, several influential papers have been based on the assumption that these holes were chewed by the louse Machaerilaemus malleus. We gathered feather-hole data from barn swallows and other passerines at 2 sites in Hungary and correlated the presence of holes with louse infestations and, more specifically, with the occurrence of M. malleus versus other species of avian lice. The shape of frequency distribution of holes was left-biased, and this bias was more pronounced in large s

Reconsideration of the longiceps species group of the feather louse genus Columbicola (Phthiraptera: Philopteridae) with descriptions of two new species.

We reconsidered the composition of the longiceps species group within Columbicola. Based primarily on head shape, the group is divided into the longiceps and the cavifrons groups, with 7 species in the former and 5 in the latter. Two new species are described: Columbicola claytoni (type host: Ducula rufigaster [Quoy and Gaimard]) and Columbicola malenkeae (type host: D. pacifica [J. E. Gmelin]). Columbicola wolffhuegeli (Eichler) is removed from synonymy with Columbicola longiceps (Rudow) and is recognized as a valid species. The true host for Columbicola paradoxus Tendeiro has been determined

Feathers as an integrated measure of organohalogen contamination, its dietary sources and corticosterone in nestlings of a terrestrial bird of prey, the northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis).

In this study, we evaluated the suitability of body feathers, preen oil and plasma for estimation of organohalogen compound (OHC) exposure in northern goshawk Accipiter gentilis nestlings (n = 37; 14 nests). In addition, body feathers received further examination concerning their potential to provide an integrated assessment of (1) OHC exposure, (2) its dietary sources (carbon sources and trophic position) and (3) adrenal gland response (corticosterone). While tetrabromobisphenol A was not detected in any sample, the presence of polychlorinated biphenyls, organochlorine pesticides, polybromina

Pathogenicity, immunogenicity, and cross-protective efficacy of representative Eimeria brunetti strains in Chinese yellow-feathered broilers: an in vivo evaluation.

Biological characterization of geographic strains of Eimeria brunetti was conducted to inform control strategies. The prepatent period was consistent (118-122 h) across strains, though the Baoding 2 strain exhibited the highest reproductive capacity while the Zhangzhou strain induced the most severe intestinal lesions. Infection significantly impaired weight gain and intestinal integrity, with optimal oocyst sporulation occurring at 25% litter moisture. Immunization with field strains elevated IgY levels and modulated cytokine responses. Upon challenge, immunized birds demonstrated improved we

Evaluation of hydrolyzed salmon and hydrolyzed poultry feather diets in restrictive diet trials for diagnosis of food allergies in pruritic dogs.

INTRODUCTION: Canine cutaneous adverse food reaction (CAFR) is a common disorder caused by abnormal and unwanted skin reactions to ingested dietary allergens. Whereas other forms of allergic dermatitis may require drug therapy, CAFR is best treated with dietary change. Therefore, early and accurate diagnosis and treatment of CAFR are critical. The gold standard test for CAFR is a 6-12 week elimination diet trial using limited and known hypoallergenic proteins. METHOD: A multicenter, triple-blinded, randomized, crossover prospective clinical study was conducted in dogs suspected to have cutane

House dust protein level of pigeon drooping and feather in environmental bird exposure-related hypersensitivity pneumonitis "A pilot study".

BACKGROUND: Bird fancier's disease is a type of HP occurring due to exposure to bird's antigen. The diagnosis is quite difficult as it requires the identification of an inciting agent with findings of HRCT and lung biopsy. The exposure is usually done by history with antigen-specific IgG and/or specific inhalational challenge testing. The study aimed to investigate the role of pigeon allergens in house dust in bird exposure-related HP patients. METHODS: This was a descriptive, mixed-method observational study. We retrospectively screened all the files of HP patients for exposure history and p
