Endogenous opioids and feeding behavior: A decade of further progress (2004-2014). A Festschrift to Dr. Abba Kastin.

Functional elucidation of the endogenous opioid system temporally paralleled the creation and growth of the journal, Peptides, under the leadership of its founding editor, Dr. Abba Kastin. He was prescient in publishing annual and uninterrupted reviews on Endogenous Opiates and Behavior that served as a microcosm for the journal under his stewardship. This author published a 2004 review, "Endogenous opioids and feeding behavior: a thirty-year historical perspective", summarizing research in this field between 1974 and 2003. The present review "closes the circle" by reviewing the last 10 years

Inhibiting neuropeptide Y Y1 receptor modulates melanocortin receptor- and NF-κB-mediated feeding behavior in phenylpropanolamine-treated rats.

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) are involved in regulating anorexia elicited by phenylpropanolamine (PPA), a sympathomimetic drug. This study explored whether NPY Y1 receptor (Y1R) is involved in this process, and a potential role for the proopiomelanocortin system was identified. Rats were given PPA once a day for 4days. Changes in the hypothalamic expression of the NPY, Y1R, NF-κB, and melanocortin receptor 4 (MC4R) levels were assessed and compared. The results indicated that food intake and NPY expression decreased, with the largest reductions observed on Day 2 (app

Role of gut-brain axis in persistent abnormal feeding behavior in mice following eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection.

Bacterial infection can trigger the development of functional GI disease. Here, we investigate the role of the gut-brain axis in gastric dysfunction during and after chronic H. pylori infection. Control and chronically H. pylori-infected Balb/c mice were studied before and 2 mo after bacterial eradication. Gastric motility and emptying were investigated using videofluoroscopy image analysis. Gastric mechanical viscerosensitivity was assessed by cardioautonomic responses to distension. Feeding patterns were recorded by a computer-assisted system. Plasma leptin, ghrelin, and CCK levels were meas

Effects of dietary nonstructural carbohydrates and protein sources on feeding behavior of tethered heifers fed high-concentrate diets.

To describe the feeding behavior of growing heifers fed high-concentrate diets with different sources of protein and nonstructural carbohydrates, and to explain the ruminal fermentation pattern, 4 ruminally fistulated Holstein heifers (BW = 132.3 +/- 1.61 kg) were assigned to a 4 x 4 Latin square design with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Two non-structural carbohydrate sources (barley and corn) and 2 protein sources [soybean meal (SBM) and sunflower meal (SFM)] that differ in their rate and extent of ruminal degradation were combined, resulting in a synchronized, rapid fermentat

Influence of clostridial vaccines and injection sites on performance, feeding behavior, and lesion size scores of beef steers.

Several clostridial vaccines are currently being used in the beef cattle industry. Of greatest concern is altering the location and route of administration of these vaccines to reduce injection-site lesions while maintaining seroconversion. Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of clostridial vaccines and injection sites on the performance, feeding behavior, and lesion size scores of beef steers. In Exp. 1, 80 crossbred beef steers (BW 237 +/- 3.2 kg) were allotted randomly into five groups and given 14 d to adapt to the feed and individual feed intake-monitoring devices (Pinp

Comparisons of Feed Bunk Nutrient Consistency, Milk Production and Cow Behavior Between Herds Using Automated Milking Systems With or Without Automated Feeding Robots.

Automated feeding robots (AFR) are increasingly being used on North American dairy farms to reduce dependency on human labor for feeding. These systems mix, deliver, and push up feed to cows at any frequency or interval desired, allowing for more frequent feed delivery than conventional feeding systems (CFS). This observational study investigated differences in ration consistency, milk components, milk fatty acid profile, and cow behavior between herds using AFR and those using CFS. Sixteen commercial dairies with automated milking systems (AMS) in the upper Midwest United States were paired b

The Longitudinal Influence of Parent-Grandparent Coparenting Relationships on Preschoolers' Eating Behaviors in Chinese Urban Families: The Mediating Roles of Caregivers' Feeding Behaviors.

BACKGROUND: The early development of children's eating behaviors is a complex process shaped by dynamic interactions within the family system. While extensive research has focused on parental feeding practices as a primary predictor of children's eating behaviors, the role of intergenerational coparenting dynamics (especially with involved grandparents) is less studied. This study aimed to examines how primary caregivers' feeding behaviors mediate the relationship between parent-grandparent coparenting dynamics and children's eating behaviors. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal study among

Lateralized Gene Splicing in the Brain is Associated With Lateralized Feeding Behavior in an Asymmetrical Scale-eating Cichlid Fish.

Lateralized behavior ("handedness") is a trait observed across all vertebrates, including humans. As an adaptive trait involved in both intraspecific and interspecific interactions, it holds broad evolutionary significance. However, the molecular basis of its brain regulation-particularly post-transcriptional regulation-remains poorly understood. Perissodus microlepis, a textbook example in evolutionary biology and an endemic scale-eating cichlid fish from Lake Tanganyika, displays pronounced lateralized feeding behavior that is complemented by its asymmetric head, by which it bites the scales

Effects of increasing narasin doses on feedlot performance, feeding behavior, carcass traits, and rumen-cecum morphometrics in Nellore cattle.

Narasin is an ionophore commonly used to improve energy efficiency and feed utilization in beef cattle. This study evaluated the impact of increasing levels of narasin on performance, feeding behavior, carcass traits, and ruminal and cecum morphometrics of Nellore cattle in feedlot. One hundred twenty-eight Nellore yearling bulls (393 ± 24 kg) were blocked by initial body weight (BW), allocated in 32 pens (4 bulls/pen). Pens were randomly assigned to one of four treatments: 0 (control), 13, 20, or 27 ppm of narasin. After a 14-day adaptation, animals were fed a high-concentrate diet (87% conce

A booster vaccination for Salmonella spp. minimally affects feeding behavior in beef × dairy calves fed with automated milk feeders.

Farmers can use automated milk feeders (AMF) to identify changes in the behavior of individual calves before they are clinically sick. However, other management factors, such as routine procedures, may affect group- and individual-level feeding behavior patterns in calves. This matched cohort study (n = 44; 22 pairs of booster-vaccinated calves matched to controls) evaluated the effects of a booster vaccination comprised of inactivated Salmonella Typhimurium and Salmonella Dublin on feeding behavior and relative changes in behavior of Angus × Holstein calves reared at one calf-rearing facility

Phloem Metabolites of Prunus Sp. Rather than Infection with Candidatus Phytoplasma Prunorum Influence Feeding Behavior of Cacopsylla pruni Nymphs.

Phytoplasmas are specialized small bacteria restricted to the phloem tissue and spread by hemipterans feeding on plant sieve tube elements. As for many other plant pathogens, it is known that phytoplasmas alter the chemistry of their hosts. Most research on phytoplasma-plant interactions focused on the induction of plant volatiles and phytohormones. Little is known about the influence of phytoplasma infections on the nutritional composition of phloem and consequences on vector behavior and development. The plum psyllid Cacopsylla pruni transmits 'Candidatus Phytoplasma prunorum', the causing a

Central microinjection of phytohormone abscisic acid changes feeding behavior, decreases body weight, and reduces brain oxidative stress in rats.

Objectives: Natural products have a potential role on food intake in mammals. It has been reported that phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) has a regulatory role on metabolic processes. Here, the effects of ABA on feeding behavior and brain oxidative stress were investigated in male Wistar rats. Methods: ABA was injected intracerebroventricularly. Experimental groups were included (n = 9): control (received no injection), ABA vehicle (received normal saline), and ABA-treated groups were injected with different doses of ABA (2.5, 5, and 10 μg/rat for 7 days). Daily cumulative daytime and nighttime

Effects of crude glycerin from biodiesel on the diets of lambs: intake, digestibility, performance, feeding behavior, and serum metabolites.

This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that the inclusion of crude glycerin of up to 21% of DM in the diets of lambs will not compromise variables related to animal production or health. Forty-four uncastrated Santa Inês crossbreed lambs with an average age of 5 mo and a BW average of 23.9 ± 0.34 kg (mean ± SD) were distributed into four treatment groups (11 replicates per group) including 0%, 7%, 14%, or 21% crude glycerin on a DM basis. The inclusion of crude glycerin in the diets promoted a quadratic increase in DM (P = 0.018), CP (P = 0.004), and TDN (P = 0.017). There was a linea

The use of a multivariate analysis to study between-goat variability in feeding behavior and associated rumen pH patterns.

This study examined feeding patterns and their relation to rumen pH. The measured variables were the cumulative time spent chewing (eating or ruminating) and the mean rumen pH, per 20-min intervals (46 intervals altogether). A total of 333 feeding patterns, defined as time-series of measurements for 1 animal and 1 given day during 15 h and 20 min following the afternoon feeding, were collected from 12 stall-housed dairy goats fed a total mixed ration twice daily. The first objective of this study was to analyze the within-day variability of feeding behavior to characterize different feeding pa

Interrupting activator protein-1 signaling in conscious rats can modify neuropeptide Y gene expression and feeding behavior of phenylpropanolamine.

The mechanism for phenylpropanolamine (PPA)-induced anorexia has been attributed to its inhibitory action on hypothalamic neuropeptide Y (NPY), an orexigenic agent abundant in the brain. However, molecular mechanisms behind this effect are not well known. In this study, we investigated whether activator protein-1 (AP-1) signaling was involved. Rats were daily treated with PPA for 4 days. Changes in hypothalamic NPY, c-fos, c-jun, superoxide dismutase (SOD)-1, and SOD-2 mRNA contents were measured and compared. Results showed that c-fos and c-jun mRNA levels were increased following PPA treatme
