BACKGROUND: This article presents the unusual case of a 73-year-old male patient who was treated with primary interlocking nailing after a pathological femoral fracture.
DIAGNOSTICS: Despite comprehensive diagnostics including several biopsies, a tumor could not be detected. In 2008 when progressive cystic femoral destruction leading to loosening of the nail necessitated a partial femoral prosthesis, an osteosarcoma could first be diagnosed in the resected bone.
THERAPY: Advanced progression of the tumor required an extended hip exarticulation. During the current restaging of the now 84-year

Dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica was defined by Trevor (1950) as a rare congenital growth disorder of the tarsus and of the epiphysis of the long bone. In this report, a rare case of dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica associated with multiple extraskeletal osteochondromas is presented. Although different modes of expression of the same pathologic process have been suggested for dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica and osteochondroma, the biological feature of cartilaginous overgrowth in the skeletal system still seems unclear.

PURPOSE: Nonpulmonary metastases from osteogenic sarcoma are rare. A patient had a localized osteogenic sarcoma of the left femur which recurred in the abdomen, a previously unreported metastatic site.
PATIENT AND METHODS: An 18-year-old boy was treated for osteosarcoma. He had abdominal pain, vomiting, weight loss, and symptoms of intestinal obstruction at the time of relapse.
RESULTS: The patient had diffuse widespread intraabdominal osteogenic sarcoma as the only site of initial recurrence. Abdominal computerized tomography revealed ascites and calcified masses on the hepatic and peritone

A patient who developed a high malignant surface osteosarcoma at the site of a previously treated aneurysmal bone cyst is reported. The patient developed the osteosarcoma 4 years after complete curettage and bone-grafting of the cyst. The clinical, radiological and light microscopic features of this case are described. A causal relationship between the preexisting aneurysmal bone cyst and osteosarcoma is discussed, but seems to be unlikely.

Four cases of primary rhabdomyosarcoma of long bone were reported, all confirmed by operation and pathology. There were 3 male and 1 female. The femur was involved in 1 case and tibia in 3. Based on the radiologic manifestations the tumor could be divided into two different types: (1) Osteolytic form: Presenting as large area of osteolytic destruction without periosteal reaction; (2) Mixed form: In addition to patchy osteolytic destruction, calcification or dense tumor bone in the medullary cavity or soft tissue can be seen, often associated with periosteal reaction.

Forty-eight, computed tomography (CT) examinations undertaken in 30 patients with osteosarcoma of long bones were studied in detail, their diagnostic information being compared with that obtained from corresponding plain films. The latter were of more value in assessing peripheral bony involvement, by cortical extension and periosteal reaction, while the former, in general, permitted more accurate observation of extensions into adjacent soft tissues. Recognition of such extensions, however, was vitiated when they arose in relation to the proximal ends of the tibia, fibula, and humerus and when

BACKGROUND/AIM: Patients with bone tumors in their femurs are at risk of developing pathological fractures. Tumors with high fracture risk, especially fragile malignant lesions, are treated surgically. However, it is difficult to estimate bone strength based on clinical and radiographic findings. This study aimed to determine whether finite element analysis (FEA) provides useful information on the bone strength of femurs with tumors and tumor-like lesions.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Total femoral computed tomography (CT) data (slice thickness, 0.5 mm) were retrospectively obtained from 18 patients

We examined the case of a 52-year-old man presenting with a sarcoma accompanied by severe leukocytosis, which developed many years after a femoral fracture. Histologic, histochemical, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural analysis of the tumor revealed that the sarcoma could not be classified by any of the bone or soft tissue tumor classifications currently in use. The tumor cells were isolated from surgical specimens and subcultured in vitro. The concentration of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in the culture medium was constantly elevated to considerably high levels during 20 cell p

Squamous cell carcinoma as a late complication of chronic osteomyelitis is a well known phenomenon in traumatology, often occurring as a consequence of bone fractures. The majority of cases are observed in men between 50 and 60 years of age. The time from onset of inflammatory bone disease to malignant transformation differs but usually takes 30 years. In general, prognosis is thought to be favorable when adequate surgical therapy is carried out. Nowadays, it is important to recall this condition, because it has become rare. The cases reported here illustrate the difficulties that may be encou

INTRODUCTION: Extra-articular hip resection may be necessary in cases of malignant tumour of the pelvic bone or of the proximal femur invading the hip joint. When the tumour is in the proximal femur, it is possible to resect the acetabulum en bloc by performing a periacetabular osteotomy, but this creates a discontinuity in the pelvic ring with difficult reconstruction and diminished function. Several techniques described recently seek to be as sparing as possible on the pelvic bone by preserving the posterior column or both columns in order to facilitate reconstruction and improve function. BACKGROUND: Adamantinoma arising in the femur is extremely rare. We report a case of an adamantinoma occurring in the right medial femoral condyle that was diagnosed 5 years after the primary surgery.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 74-year-old Asian woman first complained of right knee pain without any cause. Radiographs demonstrated a 4×4.5 cm osteolytic lesion in her medial femoral condyle. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a lesion which showed low signal on both T1 and T2-weighted image, and enhanced signal with gadolinium contrast administration. She underwent a wide resection of the lesion and

We report a case of metastatic osteosarcoma in the jejunum causing intestinal intussusception. A 58-year-old woman underwent right femoral region amputation, lower lobectomy of the left lung and complete left pneumonectomy after four courses of chemotherapy for osteosarcoma of the right femur with left lung metastases. She was referred to our department 13 months later with progressive abdominal pain and vomiting. Abdominal radiography showed a small-bowel obstruction. She underwent emergency laparotomy, which revealed jejunal intussusception. The lead point was found to be an intraluminal tum

Authors present a case report of a patient who was diagnosed with a tumour of external iliac vein. Excision of venous wall with tumour and reconstruction of external iliac vein with venous patch was performed. Postoperative course was without complication. The patient is without complications and also without signs of recurrence in one year follow up. Tumours of venous wall are rare. They originate from vena cava inferior, less often from extremity veins. The most frequent primary tumours of vein wall are leiomyosarcomas. Secondary tumours that involve venous wall are more common than primary

We report on a 45-year-old man who presented with pain in the left leg, which he had had for 2 months. A contrast-enhanced CT scan displayed a 25-mm tumor in the lateral side of the left psoas muscle. For this suspected retroperitoneal tumor, we performed laparoscopic resection of the tumor, which was encapsulated by the funicular femoral nerve, using surgical scissors rather than a surgical energy device and preserved the normal fascicles wherever possible. Pathological examination indicated a benign ancient schwannoma arising from the femoral nerve. The patient was able to return to his job

Neuroblastoma is the most common extracranial solid tumor of childhood which should be considered in the differential diagnosis of bone metastases and resultant pathological fractures, especially in children under 5 years old. We present an 11-month-old girl who presented with a pathological femur fracture and was diagnosed with metastatic neuroblastoma.

A 76-year-old woman with multiple bone metastases from lung adenocarcinoma was admitted due to a pathological femoral fracture. On the night after admission, her consciousness deteriorated rapidly and she developed progressive respiratory failure. Computed tomography of the chest revealed diffuse ground glass opacities in both lungs, and magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed multiple acute infarctions. Her condition improved after several days of supportive treatment with oxygen, corticosteroids and diuretics. Fat embolism syndrome should be considered as a differential diagnosis if c
