Strongyloides stercoralis is a zoonotic soil-transmitted nematode affecting mainly humans and dogs but identified also in non-human primates, cats and wild carnivores. It has a cosmopolitan distribution being endemic in tropical and subtropical areas. In Romania, the infection was reported on several occasions in dogs with low prevalence (3.5% -3.8%), assessed by coproscopy and it was confirmed in human patients with no travel history. A 2-year-old male Boston Terrier dog presented to a private clinic due to severe digestive problems, in July 2022. The animal had a long history of health probl

BACKGROUND: Prophylactic anthelmintic treatment with one of three basic classes of anthelmintics (benzimidazoles, macrocyclic lactones and imidazothiazoles) is still the mainstay of control of gastrointestinal nematode infections in small ruminants worldwide. As a consequence, anthelmintic resistance is a serious threat to small ruminant health and production. While the resistance to one class of anthelmintics has already been reported in most of countries, the newly-emerging problem is the resistance to two or even all of classes referred to as multidrug resistance. This study aimed to eviden

Dioctophyma renale infection is found in a wide range of mammalian species, typically in temperate areas of the world. Here, we report for the first time, the parasitism of a domestic dog by D. renale in Hamedan, Iran, a mountainous cold region, lacking significant amounts of rainfall, high humidity and temperature. A 2.5 yr old male mixed breed dog was presented with a two months history of progressive hematuria and muscle weakness. Complete blood count and serum biochemistry were performed with results indicating impaired renal function. Urinalysis, showed hematuria as well as parasitic eggs

The identification of new anthelmintic drugs becomes a priority because of the availability of a handful of drugs, cost of treatments, and recent emergence of drug resistance. Medicinal plants are a good source of bioactive compounds for development of drugs. In this study, in vivo efficacy of Anogeissus leiocarpus was assessed in sheep naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes. Fecal examination, serological analyses, and necropsy were carried out to determine the egg and worm-burden reduction. The administration of ethanolic extract (single oral dose of 80 mg/kg) of A. leiocarpus in

In 2011, a field study was conducted to assess drug resistance of gastro-intestinal nematodes in sheep flocks in Ontario, Canada. Benzimidazole resistance in Haemonchus contortus was assessed by genetic analysis of eggs; measurement of resistant allele percentages at codons 167, 198 and 200 in the β-tubulin gene was determined on pools of H. contortus eggs using pyrosequencing. Susceptibility to benzimidazoles in gastro-intestinal nematodes was also determined using a Faecal Egg Count Reduction Test (FECRT) and a Larval Development Assay (LDA). In total, 16 farms were assessed with the genetic

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 21-month-old spayed female Border Collie was examined because of progressive right forelimb lameness, signs of pain, and subcutaneous edema. The dog lived in a fenced yard in Tampa, Fla, that contained a small area of marshy terrain.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: The subcutis and intermuscular fascia contained multiple cystic cavities filled with larval cestodes (plerocercoids or spargana) and cloudy red fluid. Parasites were identified morphologically and by DNA sequence analysis as pseudophyllidean cestodes, most likely Sparganum proliferum. The dog developed a progressively worsen

A number of anthelmintics are available for the control of gastrointestinal nematodes in cattle. In North America, O. ostertagi, Cooperia spp., lung worm, and F. hepatica probably cause the greatest losses in production. The older anthelmintics are often deficient in their action against some of these parasites. Recently, the Paratect morantel tartrate slow-release bolus has provided a mechanism for the prevention of infections with gastrointestinal nematodes and lung worm, to some extent, and this has been shown to produce considerable economic benefits. Fenbendazole removes arrested O. oster

Global efforts to eliminate onchocerciasis are hampered by the lack of a macrofilaricidal drug capable of killing adult parasites. Oxfendazole, a veterinary anthelminthic, exhibits macrofilaricidal activity and holds promise to shorten treatment durations. Phase 1 studies in healthy Caucasian adults demonstrated favorable pharmacokinetics and safety using a veterinary oral liquid formulation. More recently, a Phase 1 bioavailability trial (NCT04920292) evaluated a field-applicable tablet formulation in healthy African adults. This study presents a secondary analysis to (i) characterize the pop

This case series describes nine cases of fecal microbiota transplantation in cats and associated adverse events (AEs) from two tertiary referral hospitals. AEs were graded according to criteria established by the Veterinary Cooperative Oncology Group's Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (VCOG-CTCAE v2) for clinical trials. Cats received 5-6 g/kg donor feces 2-6 times for chronic enteropathy (n = 4) or therapy-resistant diarrhea (n = 5). AEs included lethargy (n = 7), vomiting (n = 5), diarrhea (n = 5), weight loss (n = 5), inappetence (n = 5), dehydration (n = 5), abdominal pain (n

The aim of the current work was to evaluate a potential pharmacokinetic interaction between the flukicide triclabendazole (TCBZ) and the broad-spectrum benzimidazole (BZD) anthelmintic oxfendazole (OFZ) in sheep. To this end, both an in vitro assay in microsomal fractions and an in vivo trial in lambs parasitized with Haemonchus contortus resistant to OFZ and its reduced derivative fenbendazole (FBZ) were carried out. Sheep microsomal fractions were incubated together with OFZ, FBZ, TCBZ, or a combination of either FBZ and TCBZ or OFZ and TCBZ. OFZ production was significantly diminished upon

Mesocestoides cestode infections in dogs are well known for causing severe peritonitis with larvae or larval fragments (metacestodes, tetrathyridia, or calcareous corpuscles) frequently observed cytologically in peritoneal fluid samples. This case report describes the cytologic and clinical features of 2 dogs infected with cestode larvae, with one case confirmed and the other presumed to be Mesocestoides sp. In these 2 unusual cases, cestode larvae or larval fragments were found in fine-needle aspirates of the liver and a mesenteric lymph node, but no organisms were found in peritoneal fluid s

PURPOSE: Crenosoma vulpis (Dujardin,1845) is a lungworm which has spread worldwide in canines and is associated with upper respiratory infections. In a majority of cases, the infections are accompanied with chronic cough. Diagnosis of lungworms is often underdiagnosed and can be misinterpreted as other respiratory diseases.
METHODS: The Small Animal Clinic of the University Veterinary Hospital admitted an 11-month-old dog presented with persistent cough associated with difficulty in breathing and even asphyxia. Based on clinical symptoms, the patient underwent radiological and bronchoscopic e

Strongyloides stercoralis is a soil-transmitted helminth that is increasingly reported in dogs across Europe. While most infections are subclinical, hyperinfection syndrome, marked by excessive larval proliferation and systemic spread, can occur in immunocompromised hosts. An 11-year-old male Boston Terrier dog, originating from southern France with a history of chronic diarrhoea and recent splenectomy was presented with severe regenerative anaemia, thrombocytopenia, and a degenerative left shift. Haemotropic Mycoplasma haemocanis infection was diagnosed, and doxycycline therapy was initiated.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a prevalent allergic disorder instigated by a variety of allergenic stimuli. The study aims to elucidate the mechanistic underpinnings of Guanylate-binding protein 2 (GBP2) in modulating AR. Bioinformatics analysis was used to identify hub genes in AR, and GBP2 was identified. Mice were injected with ovalbumin (OVA) to create AR model. The pathological changes of the nasal mucosa were observed by hematoxylin-eosin staining. ELISA and western blot demonstrated that in OVA-induced AR mice, high IgE and IgG1 levels, inflammation (increased TNF-α, IL-5 and IFN-γ), oxidati

Various pharmaceuticals are essential for livestock farming, but some are highly toxic to aquatic life if they reach surface water bodies. Mediterranean Climate is characterized by dry summers followed by intense autumn storms. We studied the effect of these climatic conditions on the risk of pharmaceutical residues transfer to streams at the catchment-scale. Pharmaceutical products routinely used in the study area, as well as their application frequency and season, were identified through interviews with farmers. As a proof a concept, three veterinary pharmaceuticals (Fenbendazole (FBZ), Mebe

OBJECTIVE: To report anthelmintic resistance in gastrointestinal nematode parasites of cattle on commercial dairy farms in the Macalister Irrigation District of Gippsland, Victoria.
METHODS: Faecal egg count reduction tests (FECRTs) were used to assess anthelmintic resistance on 20 Macalister Irrigation District dairy farms between May 2013 and June 2014. All three currently available anthelmintic classes for cattle nematodes in Australia were tested. Faecal samples were collected 10-14 days post-treatment for individual faecal egg counts (FEC) and larval differentiation. The arithmetic mean

Zebrafish in research facilities are frequently infected with capillarids. Since the health status (as a nonprotocol source of variation) of zebrafish can affect the validity of experiments, it is important to develop therapies for common zebrafish diseases. Regarding the likelihood of (1) the development of drug resistance and (2) the loss of the efficacy of a drug for laboratory zebrafish, the availability of alternatives for treatment is of direct importance. The efficacy of five dewormers from the same or different therapeutic groups was assessed in the current study. The exposure to each

The main purpose of the research was to determine if three weekly samplings would produce consistent results for low strongyle egg shedders, generally associated with older horses. Strongyle egg counts per gram of feces (EPG) were done for 661 Thoroughbred mares on 14 farms in 2012-2013 once a week for three consecutive weeks. None of the mares had been treated with ivermectin or moxidectin for more than 90 days and with fenbendazole, oxibendazole, or pyrantel pamoate for more than 60 days. Strongyle EPG count data indicated that 38.3% of the mares were positive at first and second sampling, a
