Epidemiology of upper extremity football injures presenting to US emergency departments from 2013 to 2022.

Football continues to be one of the most popular sports in the United States. It is associated with a high rate of injuries, particularly to the upper extremity. Outside data on professional play, there is limited data on the epidemiologic trends of these injuries in other participant groups. The purpose of this study was to analyze the incidence and demographic trends of football related hand and finger injuries presenting the U.S. emergency departments from 2013 to 2022. The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database was queried for football related injuries to the hand

Racial Variation in Treatment of Traumatic Finger/Thumb Amputation: A National Comparative Study of Replantation and Revision Amputation.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic finger/thumb amputations are some of the most prevalent traumatic injuries affecting Americans each year. Rates of replantation after traumatic finger/thumb amputation, however, have been declining steadily across U.S. hospitals, which may make these procedures less accessible to minorities and vulnerable populations. The specific aim of this study was to examine racial variation in finger replantation after traumatic finger/thumb amputation. METHODS: Using a two-level hierarchical model, the authors retrospectively compared replantation rates for African American patien

Strength measurement and clinical outcome after pulley ruptures in climbers.

PURPOSE: Ruptures of the finger flexor pulleys are the most frequent injuries in rock climbers. Whereas multiple pulley injuries demand a surgical reconstruction, single ruptures are mainly treated conservatively. Nevertheless, the question of the clinical outcome or a persisting finger strength deficit after conservative therapy arises. METHODS: Twenty-one rock climbers (age 34 +/- 9 yr) with a grade 2-4 pulley injury were reevaluated 3.46 (range: 0.25-18) yr after injury. The clinical evaluation followed a standard questionnaire in combination with an ultrasound examination in extension and

Treatment of Patients With Electrical Injury by Using Modified Forearm Venous Flap: Retrospective Case Series Study.

OBJECTIVE: Severe hand electrical injuries often occur in functional areas such as joints; the repair requires attention to both appearance and function due to the visibility of the hand. This study aimed to present the clinical experience of successfully repairing hand electrical injuries using improved forearm venous flaps. METHODS: From 2020 to 2022, 15 cases of severe hand electrical injuries were diagnosed, including 10 males and 5 females. Among them, 6 cases were repaired in the first web space, 4 in the thumb, 3 in the index finger, 2 in the middle finger, 2 in the ring finger, and 2

[Clinical experiences and dosage pattern in subcutaneous single-injection digital block technique].

100 patients with injuries to their fingers were treated using the subcutaneous digital block as described by Low et al.. Different dosages ranging from 2 to 3 millilitres of a local anesthetic were required to obtain appropriate anesthesia according to the location of injury. 108 finger injuries were treated, 18 thumb injuries, 90 finger injuries. The anesthetic was administered using a 0.55 x 25 mm needle and injected strictly subcutaneously into the flexor crease at the base of the finger or thumb. Injuries to the palmar aspect of the fingers were anesthetized using 2 ml of a local anesthet

Cold sensitivity after replantation in relation to arterial circulation and vasoregulation.

Cold intolerance is a common problem after injuries to the hand. To elucidate the mechanism of this cold sensitivity, eight patients with successful replantations of amputations of the thumb or index finger were studied one and half years later. In six patients the Doppler signal from the anastomosed arteries was normal and in two patients signs of mild stenosis were found. All patients had normal or slightly reduced basal finger systolic pressure in the replanted finger. Six had signs of marked vasospasm. Alpha-receptor blockade had no effect on the cold-induced decrease in finger systolic pr

Surgical and Nonsurgical Management of Mallet Finger: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: The current literature describes multiple surgical and nonsurgical techniques for the management of mallet finger injuries, and there is no consensus on the indications for surgical treatment. The objective of this study was to determine, through a literature review, if any conclusions can be drawn concerning the indications for surgery in mallet finger injuries; the treatment outcomes of surgical versus nonsurgical management; the most effective methods of surgical and nonsurgical treatment; and the most common treatment complications of mallet finger injuries. METHODS: A systematic

[The revenue from finger replantation and revision amputation: Is it cost-covering?].

BACKGROUND: Finger amputation injuries are frequently treated conditions in occupational accident hospitals. They are either treated by replantation or revision amputation. The costs of these two treatment options differ significantly. This study aims to determine if the revenue generated from the treatment of finger amputation injuries in the German DRG system is cost-covering and if there are differences depending on the type of health insurance. METHODS: Based on our hospital's cost data from the years 2014 and 2015, we performed an analysis of the revenue generated from finger replantatio

Avulsion of the extensor carpi radialis brevis insertion: a case report and review of the literature.

Injuries to the bases of the index finger and long finger metacarpals are unusual because of the stability of the carpometacarpal joints. Such stability is provided by the strong capsuloligamentous attachments and the unique bony architecture. Given the rare nature of these injuries, there is no consensus regarding the optimal management of avulsion fractures of the bases of the index finger and long finger metacarpals. Open reduction and internal fixation of the fracture, with anatomic repair of the extensor carpi radialis brevis or extensor carpi radialis longus, offers several advantages ov

[Injury of the hand by a high pressure injection: often serious subcutaneous damage].

Two men, aged 32 and 40, had a high-pressure paint injection injury to the left index and middle finger respectively. The first patient's finger became inflamed within a week, after which the paint was removed operatively; there was complete recovery of function. In the other patient the paint was removed immediately; however the finger was amputated a week later because of gangrene. High-pressure injection injuries should not be underestimated. High-pressure injection injuries to the hand often lead to severe and irreversible loss of function. Acknowledging the severity of this type of injury

Transfer of the supinator muscle to the extensor pollicis brevis for thumb extension reconstruction in C7-T1 brachial plexus palsy.

With C7-T1 brachial plexus injuries, finger motion is absent while shoulder, elbow and wrist function are largely preserved. Previously, we have reconstructed finger flexion by transferring the brachialis muscle to the flexor digitorum profundus and flexor pollicis longus; and we have restored extension of thumb and finger by transferring the motor nerve to the supinator to the posterior interosseous nerve, which is only feasible in fresh injuries. We describe the transfer of the supinator muscle to the extensor pollicis brevis to reanimate thumb extension in patients with long standing C7-T1

Traumatic Finger Amputation in the U.S. Military.

INTRODUCTION: Finger amputations can lead to loss of work time and suboptimal function, particularly in the active duty military. There is a paucity of epidemiologic and outcome data for these injuries. The purposes of this study are to define key demographic data pertaining to transphalangeal finger amputations in the U.S. Military and to assess epidemiological data to define risk factors for medical readiness following finger injuries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective review of the military electronic medical record of encounters between 2016 and 2019 with traumatic transphal

Concomitant injuries affect prognosis in patients with central slip tear.

Central slip tears often occur with concomitant hand injuries. However, the outcome of a central slip tear and the effect of concomitant injuries are rarely reported. We evaluated 67 fingers in 63 patients with central slip tears who underwent primary surgery in our hospital between April 2009 and June 2017. We performed multivariate analyses, with proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint active range of motion (AROM) and existing extension lag greater than 10° as dependent variables and age, existence of concomitant fractures, skin defects, collateral ligament injuries, ruptured lateral bands, ru

Conservative versus surgical treatment of mallet finger: a pooled quantitative literature evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Although common, mallet finger represents a spectrum of injuries for which there are many questions about the best form of treatment. A long-standing controversy continues as to strategies and techniques of treatment. This quantitative literature analysis is the first that makes use of an evidence-based evaluation process to pool across studies the outcomes of conservative versus surgical treatment of closed mallet finger injuries of both acute and chronic or recurrent types. METHODS: Published articles in English were sought using multiple methods, including the MEDLINE and EMBAS

The sprained finger that isn't.

Six athletic injuries commonly misdiagnosed as a sprained finger are three types of closed tendon injuries, two types of intra-articular fractures involving the middle joint and a volar plate avulsion of the middle joint. The proper diagnosis can usually be made with a good history, a thorough examination and anteroposterior, lateral and oblique x-rays of the finger. Reconstructive procedures can be performed for missed injuries, but the results are inferior to those obtained with early treatment.

Functional Deficits in the Wrist and Finger Joints of Goalkeepers After 20 Years of Playing Recreational Football.

BACKGROUND: Long-term damage in the hip, knee and ankle joints of football players has been thoroughly discussed in the literature. Compared with outfield players, however, goalkeepers sustain injuries to the upper extremities five times more often. There is a lack of studies on long-term functional damage to the wrist and finger joints of football goalkeepers. HYPOTHESIS: Repetitive micro-traumas and injuries lead to degenerative diseases in goalkeepers after 20 years of playing recreational soccer. METHODS: The personal histories, injury histories and clinical examination findings of the w

[Jamming a child's finger: an experimental study to determine elastic resistance and the point of onset of bone/joint deformation].

Knowledge of the elastic properties of children's fingers is very important to understand the potential hazard for jamming injuries that exists in modern motor vehicles with automatic power-operated windows. This study determined the elastic resistance and the point of onset of bone/joint deformation at each of 5 different jam positions of a child's finger under continuous dorsal-palmar compression. An unembalmed finger that recently had been surgically removed from a polydactylic 8 month-old girl was jammed in a custom hydraulic test apparatus. A subminiature force sensor and an electrometric

Nerve Transfer from the Long Head Triceps Nerve to Posterior Interosseous Nerve for Restoration of Wrist, Finger, and Thumb.

In brachial plexus injuries where the radial nerve is damaged, there is loss of wrist, finger, and thumb extension. Surgical options for treating brachial plexus injuries are case dependent. To restore finger and wrist extension, the median nerve is primarily utilized for nerve transfer. We describe a new technique in a young man who suffered a gunshot wound in the left axilla, injuring the radial, median, and ulnar nerves. To restore wrist, finger, and thumb extension, we designed and performed a new technique consisting of nerve transfer, an interposition sural nerve graft from the motor bra

Classification and treatment of closed sagittal band injuries.

Twenty-eight nonrheumatoid patients were treated for sagittal band injuries. The digits involved, in order of frequency, were long, small, index, and ring. We observed three clinical types of sagittal band injuries: type I, injury without extensor tendon instability; type II, injury with tendon subluxation; and type III, injury with tendon dislocation. Eight of nine patients with small finger involvement had radial sagittal band injuries; four of them presented with abduction deformity of the small finger. Satisfactory results were achieved with nonoperative treatment when it was initiated wit
