BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in companion animals is an increasing concern within the One Health framework, particularly regarding opportunistic pathogens such as Klebsiella spp. This retrospective study evaluated the epidemiology, antimicrobial susceptibility profiles, and temporal resistance trends of Klebsiella spp. infections in dogs and cats across the Iberian Peninsula.
METHODS: A total of 809 clinical isolates collected between 2016 and 2024 and submitted to a private diagnostic laboratory in Barcelona were analysed.
RESULTS: Klebsiella pneumoniae was the pred

Gonorrhoea is currently the second most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection in England and Wales (Public Health Laboratory Service, 2002). Early initiation of treatment is important in the reduction of the onward transmission of infection and contributes to the overall control of the spread of gonorrhoea. A central tenet of this is the use of effective antimicrobial treatment. Both global and local surveillance programmes have successfully generated robust data, identifying the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance when using fluoroquinolones, formerly a first-line treatment for g

Chicken meat is a major source of foodborne salmonellosis. In Japan, fluoroquinolones and third-generation cephalosporins are the first- and second-choice treatments for Salmonella gastroenteritis, respectively. We investigated the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella in 154 chicken meat products from Hokkaido (42), Tohoku (45), Kanto (5), and Kyushu (62), Japan. Salmonella was isolated from 133 products (86.4%). High resistance rates were observed for streptomycin (56.5%), tetracycline (50.7%), and kanamycin (47.8%), while all isolates were susceptible to cefazolin, cefotaxim

Infectious meningitis is a medical emergency. Within the spectrum of infectious agents, the most important is Streptococcus pneumoniae, the most frequent etiological agent of bacterial meningitis. The initiation of empirical antimicrobial treatment bears great importance and considers third-generation cephalosporins as the first alternative. However, cases of ceftriaxone resistance have been reported in several regions of the world. This has become an emerging problem in need of reconsideration of the current empirical antibiotic treatment schemes. We present the case of a 56-year old man with

RATIONALE: The pathway of Nontyphoid Salmonella meningitis, especially in exclusive breastfeeding infants, has not been well characterized.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We analyzed data related to nontyphoid Salmonella meningitis in 4 infants.
DIAGNOSES: No diarrhea was observed and the coproculture was negative for all patients.
INTERVENTIONS: Early diagnosis and treatment with combination of third-generation cephalosporins plus quinolones for a minimum of 3 weeks is necessary to avoid severe sequelae and death.
OUTCOMES: The first 3 patients had a good evolution, whereas the last patient had multip

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common in children, and diagnosis is often difficult due to nonspecific symptoms, urine collection challenges, and increasing antimicrobial resistance. The emergence of ESBL-producing organisms highlights the need for locally informed guidelines supported by antibiotic stewardship activities. This study aimed to describe antibiotic prescribing patterns for suspected community-acquired UTIs (CA-UTIs) in the Italian primary care setting among children aged 0–14 years and to assess the impact of the 2019 Italian Society of Paediatric Nephrology (SIN

Colonization and infection with bacteria with acquired antibiotic resistance are among the risks for soldiers on international deployments. Enterobacterales with resistance against third-generation cephalosporines are amongst the most frequently imported microorganisms. To contribute to the scarcely available epidemiological knowledge on deployment-associated resistance migration, we assessed the molecular epidemiology of third-generation cephalosporine-resistant Escherichia coli isolated between 2007 and 2016 from German soldiers after deployments, with a particular focus on the African Sahel

An 84-year-old man was admitted to the hospital with a diabetic foot ulcer and osteomyelitis of the calcaneum. While being treated with cefoxitin sodium, he experienced generalized exfoliative dermatitis, which subsided on discontinuation of therapy. To our knowledge, this is the first report of exfoliative dermatitis with a cephalosporin or related drug.

We aimed to identify risk factors for the development of acute kidney injury (AKI) during treatment of Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB), with particular emphasis on the roles of cloxacillin and cefazolin, and the contribution of other antibiotics. We performed a retrospective, observational, single-center study of a prospective cohort of patients with SAB receiving cloxacillin or cefazolin as definitive therapy and with serum creatinine available at baseline and days 5, 10, and 15. The primary outcome was the highest AKI stage between days 5 and 15; the secondary outcome was 30 day morta

BACKGROUND: Prophylactic antibiotics are commonly used in craniofacial surgeries. Despite the low risk of surgical site infection after nasal surgery, a lack of consensus regarding the use of antibiotic prophylaxis in the closed reduction of nasal bone fractures has led to inappropriate prescribing patterns. Through this study, we aimed to investigate the status of prophylactic antibiotic use in closed reductions of nasal bone fractures in Korea.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was conducted using data from the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort of Korea from 20

Background Antibiotic resistance has reached an alarming rate globally especially in middle-income countries such as Lebanon. The development of antibiotic resistance is strongly linked to the increased population's injudicious consumption of antibiotics. Objective This study aims to explore the trends of antibiotics consumption in the Lebanese community, between 2004 and 2016, to inform rational use of antibiotics. Setting The study was performed using the Intercontinental Marketing Statistics (IMS) Health Lebanon database Method This is an observational longitudinal study conducted through a

Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD), caused by Neisseria meningitidis, can have a fatality rate as high as 10%, even with appropriate treatment. In the UK, penicillin is administered to patients in primary care whilst third generation cephalosporins, cefotaxime and ceftriaxone, are administered in secondary care. The first-choice antibiotic for chemoprophylaxis of close contacts is ciprofloxacin, followed by rifampicin. Immunocompromised individuals are often recommended antibiotic chemoprophylaxis and vaccination due to a greater risk of IMD. Resistance to antibiotics among meningococci is r

The data on antimicrobial resistance in zoonotic and indicator bacteria in 2016, submitted by 28 EU Member States (MSs), were jointly analysed by the EFSA and ECDC. Resistance in bacterial isolates of zoonotic Salmonella and Campylobacter from humans, animals and food, and resistance in indicator Escherichia coli as well as in meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus from animals and food were addressed. 'Microbiological' resistance was assessed using epidemiological cut-off (ECOFF) values; for some countries, qualitative data on isolates from humans were interpreted in a way that correspond

BACKGROUND: Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing organisms, first identified in Germany in 1983, are now widely recognized as clinically relevant causes of infections in community.
METHODS: Our objective was to evaluate the clinical and molecular epidemiology of community-onset, extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (CO-ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli infections. We used a case-case-control study undertaken in a 450-bed, tertiary care hospital. Patients included case group (CG) I, which had confirmed CO-ESBL-producing E coli infections (n=46). Case group (CG) II (n=46) included patie

Numerous cases of drug-induced hemolytic anemia have been described in patients treated with penicillin or cephalosporin. Second and third generation cephalosporins are more commonly implicated in hemolytic reactions than first generation cephalosporins. We report a case of severe cefotetan-induced hemolytic anemia in a previously healthy 46-year-old woman undergoing an elective hysterectomy. The patient received 2 g of intravenous cefotetan intraoperatively and subsequently at 12 and 24 h post-operatively. She complained of diarrhea and fever on the third post-operative day and was seen in he

Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a major cause of pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, and infertility, and it can facilitate human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission. Emergence of gonococcal resistance to penicillin and tetracycline occurred during the 1970s and became widespread during the early 1980s. More recently, resistance to fluoroquinolones developed. Resistance was documented first in Asia, then emerged in the United States in Hawaii followed by other western states. It then became prevalent in all other regions of the United States. In Hawaii, fluoroquinolone resistance wa

INTRODUCTION: A constant update of antibiotic sensitivity of pathogens of the area, country, or institution helps in interventions that would improve the prescribing pattern and rational use of drugs in children. This study aimed to assess prescribing trends for urinary tract infection (UTI), a common distressful pediatric infection in a tertiary care teaching hospital.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional, and record-based analysis including pediatric patients aged <18 years of either gender diagnosed with UTI. The case record files retrieved fr

PURPOSE: Salmonella spp. are important foodborne pathogens exhibiting increasing resistance to antimicrobial drugs. Resistance to broad-spectrum β-lactams, mediated by extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) and AmpC β-lactamase enzymes is fast spreading and has had negative impacts on the clinical outcomes, particularly on third-generation cephalosporins. This study investigated the carriage of AmpC gene among multidrug-resistant Salmonella spp. from Lagos, Nigeria.
METHODS: Forty Salmonella spp. from clinical samples (S. typhi = 13; S. typhimurium = 10; S. enteritidis = 8; S. choleraesuis = 5;

There is little data to support the efficacy of prophylactic antibiotics in traumatology. In closed fractures three randomized controlled studies using a 1-3 day prophylaxis with Cephalosporins of the first or second generation or a Penicillinase-resistent Penicillin demonstrated a reduction of the infection rate. For the Cephalosporins of the second generation it was shown, that a single dose was less efficient than five repeated applications over 24 hours. In hip-fractures a prophylaxis with Cephalothin or Cefotiam reduced the frequency of infections when compared with controls. In open frac
