Load, unload and repeat: Understanding the mechanical characteristics of zirconia in dentistry.

OBJECTIVES: Zirconia-based dental restorations and implants are gaining attention due to their bioactivity, corrosion resistance and mechanical stability. Further, surface modification of zirconia implants has been performed at the macro-, micro- and nanoscale to augment bioactivity. While zirconia's physical and chemical characteristics have been documented, its relation to mechanical performance still needs to be explored. This extensive review aims to address this knowledge gap. METHODS: This review critically compares and contrasts the findings from articles published in the domain of 'me

Effects of Different Orientation Angle, Size, Surface Roughness, and Heat Curing on Mechanical Behavior of 3D Printed Cement Mortar With/Without Glass Fiber in Powder-Based 3DP.

Powder-based (inkjet) three-dimensional printing (3DP) technology presents great promise in the construction industry. The capacity to build complex geometries is one of the most appealing features of the process without formwork. This article focuses on the vital aspect of using a modified powder (CP) instead of commercial powder (ZP 151). It also discusses the effects of the size of specimens and the curing process of 3DP specimens. This article presents not only the improved mechanical properties of the mortar that are revealed through a heat-curing procedure but also the properties of the

Flexural Response and Parametric Analysis of Precast Concrete Composite Beams Considering New-to-Old Concrete Interface Properties.

The structural integrity of precast concrete composite beams heavily relies on the new-to-old concrete interface. Existing numerical models and traditional analytical methods struggle to capture the complex, multi-variable interfacial degradation mechanisms. This study proposes an integrated framework combining high-fidelity 3D nonlinear finite element (FE) simulations with explainable machine learning (XML). A mixed interface constitutive model, seamlessly coupling surface-based cohesive behavior with residual Coulomb friction, was established and validated to accurately replicate the full-ra

In Vivo Mechanical Assessment of Cortical Bone Rigidity Enhances Fracture Discrimination Beyond DXA in Postmenopausal Women.

Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA)-derived areal bone mineral density (BMD) remains the clinical standard for assessing osteoporosis risk, yet it fails to identify over 75% of individuals who sustain fragility fractures. Direct in vivo mechanical assessment of cortical bone strength may address this diagnostic gap by capturing structural and material properties that govern whole-bone strength but are not reflected by BMD. We conducted a multicenter case-control study with cross-sectional assessment to compare ulna flexural rigidity, a biomechanical property correlated with whole-bone stren

Enhancing Mechanical and Thermal Performance of Injection-Molded PLA via Nucleation and Processing Optimization.

This study examines the effects of 2 wt% orotic acid (OA) nucleation and injection molding conditions on the crystallization behavior and thermo-mechanical performance of polylactic acid (PLA). Differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction revealed that 2 wt.% OA accelerates crystallization, enabling molded PLA to achieve crystallinity levels as high as 52-53% under low packing pressure and long hold time. Mechanical testing showed that tensile modulus increased with longer hold time, while tensile strength decreased due to constrained relaxation in the skin layer. Flexural strength

The Effect of Carbon-Based Nanofillers on Cryogenic Temperature Mechanical Properties of CFRPs.

In the present work, the effects of carbon-based nanofillers (0.5 wt%), i.e., graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), carbon nanofibers (CNFs), and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), on the cryogenic temperature (77 K) mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs) were investigated. The study utilized an ex situ conditioning method for cryogenic tests. The nanofillers were mixed with the epoxy matrix by a solvent-free fluidized bed mixing technique (FBM), while unidirectional carbon fibers were impregnated with the resulting nanocomposites to manufacture CFRP samples. Optical microscopy was e

Testing of silicon nitride ceramic bearings for total hip arthroplasty.

Modern ceramic bearings used in total hip arthroplasty (THA) consist of a femoral head (ball) articulating inside a hemispherical acetabular cup (socket); the ball and socket are made of alumina (Al(2)O(3)) and Al(2)O(3)-based composite materials. In the present study, total hip bearings were made from a different ceramic material, silicon nitride (Si(3)N(4)), by sintering and hot isostatic pressing of powders. The resulting material had improved mechanical properties over modern Al(2)O(3) THA bearings, with a flexural strength of 920 +/- 70 MPa, a Weibull modulus of 19, and a fracture toughne

Effect of micro-aeration on the mechanical behaviour of chocolates and implications for oral processing.

Aeration in foods has been widely utilised in the food industry to develop novel foods with enhanced sensorial characteristics. Specifically, aeration at the micron-sized scale has a significant impact on the microstructure where micro-bubbles interact with the other microstructural features in chocolates. This study aims to determine the effect of micro-aeration on the mechanical properties of chocolate products, which are directly correlated with textural attributes such as hardness and crumbliness. Uniaxial compression tests were performed to determine the mechanical properties such as Pois

Mechanical properties and chemical composition of avian long bones.

We have studied the mechanical behaviour of avian long bones as whole structures, by calculating mechanical parameters such as maximum load, stiffness, bending strength and flexural Young's modulus; bones were always tested in three-point bending. Furthermore composition in several chemical elements and amino acids related to collagen content was also analysed. Correlations were established between body mass, mechanical parameters and chemical contents. Both bending strength and Young's modulus were negatively correlated to body mass. Significant correlations were found between nitrogen conten
