Combined application of modified corn-core powder and sludge-based biochar for sewage sludge pretreatment: Dewatering performance and dissipative particle dynamics simulation.

Sludge is an inevitable by-product of municipal wastewater treatment processes, and its high moisture content poses a major challenge for its subsequent treatment and disposal. Previous studies have explored the effects of applying modified corn-core powder (MCCP) on dewatering sludge. Here, we characterized the effects of applying both MCCP and sludge-based biochar (SBB) on dewatering sludge. Analysis of the anti-shear ability of SBB revealed that SBB was a skeleton builder with high compressive strength, demonstrating that SBB could maintain the permeability of sludge under high-pressure fil

Unusual intracytoplasmic inclusions in a case of idiopathic scleritis.

Large cells containing prominent, refractile PAS-positive inclusions were found in cytological smears prepared from scrapings of the conjunctiva of an elderly diabetic patient with idiopathic scleritis progressing to scleromalacia perforans. Electron-microscopic study of these inclusions revealed them to be intracellular accumulations of dense, flocculent mucoid material within vacuoles whose interior surface was frequently decorated with microvilli. Similar inclusions have been reported in a number of neoplasms in nonocular tissue. The significance of these findings with regard to the patient

Abatement of some commercial fungicide content from model dispersions by a new thiourea-graft-polyethyleneimine derivative.

A new derivative of polyethyleneimine (PEI) with 9% degree of substitution of its primary and secondary amino groups with thiourea moieties (TU9-PEI) has been synthesized and investigated as flocculant in model suspensions of commercial fungicide formulations Dithane M45, Melody Compact 49 WG, Cabrio®Top, and their mixtures. The structure of TU9-PEI, obtained by an aqueous one-pot strategy involving formaldehyde mediated coupling of PEI and TU, was confirmed by FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy as well as the streaming potential measurements. The settling time, polymer dose, and fungicide type and

Study on the taste-masking effect and mechanism of Acesulfame K on berberine hydrochloride.

OBJECTIVE: In our previous taste-masking study, we found that Acesulfame K (AK) had a better taste-masking effect than other high-efficiency sweeteners for several representative bitter natural drugs in aqueous decoction. Furthermore, we performed a preliminary taste-masking study of AK for representative bitter API Berberine Hydrochloride (BH) and found that it had a good taste-masking effect. We also found that flocculent precipitation was generated in the BH solution, but it was not clear whether it was related to the good taste-masking effect. This study was conducted to explore the taste-

Colloidal properties of protein-stabilized emulsions in the presence of saliva: Impact on oral lubrication and sensory perception.

The colloidal behavior of protein-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions in the presence of saliva was investigated, as well as the impact of oil droplet-saliva interactions on the physicochemical and sensory properties of these emulsions. The emulsions were stabilized by three amphiphilic food proteins: sodium caseinate (NaCas), whey protein isolate (WPI), or lysozyme. Saliva incorporation decreased the negative charge and increased the particle size of all the emulsions, indicating a reduction in their stability. The NaCas emulsions exhibited the least structural changes in the presence of saliva

Using surrogate data to assess risks associated with microbial peak events in source water at drinking water treatment plants.

A monitoring strategy was implemented at two drinking water treatment plants in Quebec, Canada, to evaluate microbial reduction performances of full-scale treatment processes under different source water conditions. β-D-glucuronidase activity in source water was automatically monitored in near-real-time to establish baseline and event conditions at each location. High-volume water samples (50-1,500 L) were collected at the inflow and the outflow of coagulation/flocculation, filtration, and UV disinfection processes and were analysed for two naturally occurring surrogate organisms: Escherichia

Serological studies on leprosy. A comparison of complement-fixation tests using antigens prepared from tubercle bacilli and beef-heart lipids with other serological reactions.

Sera from lepromatous leprosy patients were subjected to a battery of serological tests, including flocculation, agglutination and complement fixation. A correlation was found between the antileprous antibody content and the reactivity with "cardchol" antigen, but not with Trypanosoma cruzi antigen, cardiolipin or Rubino antigen. The reactivity of leprous sera with tubercle bacilli antigen in the quantitative complement-fixation test decreased in three patients with lepromatous leprosy during sulfone treatment. When syphilis was present in a lepromatous leprosy case, it was possible to follow

beta-Galactosidase and neuraminidase deficiency associated with angiokeratoma corporis diffusum.

A 17-year-old Japanese boy was found to have ataxia, generalized angiokeratomas, skeletal deformities, visual impairment, and macular cherry-red spots, without hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, or renal failure. Laboratory examination disclosed a deficiency of beta-galactosidase as well as of neuraminidase activity in the leukocytes and fibroblasts, while alpha-galactosidase and alpha-L-fucosidase activities were normal. On electron microscopic examination, numerous cytoplasmic vacuoles containing flocculated material were found in the vascular endothelial cells, histiocytes, perineurial cells, and

Detection of Human Adenovirus and Rotavirus in Wastewater in Lusaka, Zambia: Demonstrating the Utility of Environmental Surveillance for the Community.

Enteric infections due to viral pathogens are a major public health concern. Detecting the risk areas requires a strong surveillance system for pathogenic viruses in sources such as wastewater. Towards building an environmental surveillance system in Zambia, we aimed to identify group A rotavirus (RVA) and human adenovirus (HAdV) in wastewater. Convenient sampling was conducted at four study sites every Tuesday for five consecutive weeks. The research team focused on three different methods of viral concentration to determine the suitability in terms of cost and applicability for a regular sur

Osteolytic mystery: A rare case of pathologic fracture from a phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor in hip and femur.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT) is a rare tumor causing bone complications and myopathy. Histologically, PMT displays a mix of spindled cells, osteoclast-like giant cells, basophilic matrix, and flocculent or "grungy" calcification. Here we describe a case of PMT in the right hip and proximal femur, initially suspected to be multiple myeloma, presenting with osteolytic lesions and elevated alkaline phosphatase. Tests for malignancy were negative, but a subsequent biopsy confirmed PMT. The patient underwent hip biopsy, femur resection, and hemiarthroplasty, with follow-up MRI recommended.

Histogenesis of mucin in follicular mucinosis. An electron microscopic study.

Many dilated cystic ergastoplasms, including their granular, filamentous contents, the developed Golgi apparatuses, and vesicles were observed in the cytoplasm of affected root sheath cells, which were accompanied by much amorphous agglutination of fine granular or flocculent materials in the interstices. These extracellular substances were stained with ruthenium red and seemed to correspond to increased metachromatic materials, probably composed of hyaluronic acid. Possible structures for hyaluronic acid were discussed. Mucin in follicular mucinosis seemed to be produced by secretory function

An integrated pump-suction electrocoagulation system for accelerated hardness removal: Process intensification and crystallization mechanisms.

Conventional electrochemical softening processes are often constrained by the spatial decoupling of precipitation and solid-liquid separation, resulting in slow crystallization kinetics, high chemical demand, and limited process integration. To overcome these limitations, three progressively intensified systems, namely pump-suction chemical flocculation (PCF), split-type electrocoagulation (SPE), and integrated pump-suction electrocoagulation (IPE), were developed based on a membrane-free pump-suction architecture. Among them, the IPE system spatially integrates cathodic alkalinity generation

Chemical and Physical Processes Governing Chromium(VI) Removal by Continuous Flow-Through Iron Electrocoagulation for Drinking Water Treatment.

Iron electrocoagulation (EC) is a promising approach for removing hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] from water. Understanding the chemical and physical processes that govern Cr(VI) removal under dynamic and environmentally relevant conditions can enable optimal designs of treatment systems. This study evaluated the rates, extents, and mechanisms of Cr(VI) removal in a flow-through EC reactor followed by a flocculation chamber and a settling basin. Using a short EC reactor residence time, low iron doses, and realistic water chemistries, the experiments revealed both advantages and challenges of EC.

Distinct roles of granules and flocs in aerobic granular sludge processes.

Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS) is an innovative and efficient biotechnology for wastewater treatment that has been successfully applied on full-scale worldwide. Full-scale municipal AGS systems typically contain both granular sludge (granules) and flocculent sludge (flocs). Studies on the different roles of granules and flocs remain limited. In this study, a laboratory-scale AGS reactor fed with complex synthetic wastewater was operated to simulate full-scale AGS systems and to study the different functional roles of granules and flocs. The laboratory reactor achieved a coexistence of granules

The nanoscale explanation of metal cations differences in enhancing the Fe(III) coagulation performance.

Coagulation is a widely applied and important process for water treatment, and the development of improved coagulation reagents continues to be a practical objective. However, mechanisms guiding the development of composite coagulants remain insufficiently understood. In addressing this deficiency, this study has investigated the enhancement of conventional Fe(III) coagulation by composite coagulants that incorporate an additional metal salt (Me: Ca²⁺, Al³⁺, Ti⁴⁺, Zr⁴⁺), focusing on the mechanistic roles that Me constituents play in Fe-based coagulation. The effectiveness of composite coagulan

Sustainable high-flux ceramic membrane operations for seawater pretreatment under diverse algal bloom intensities.

Achieving reliable high-flux ultrafiltration (UF) for seawater treatment, particularly during harmful algal blooms (HABs), remains a significant challenge. This study revisited the conventional in-line coagulation followed by ultrafiltration (IC-UF) process and evaluated its performance under high-flux ceramic membrane operation (net flux: 200 L/m2/h) across varying HAB intensities. In addition, we re-evaluated a pretreatment approach combining in-line coagulation and flocculation prior to ultrafiltration (ICF-UF), a well-established yet rarely implemented strategy in seawater desalination, an

Characteristics and stabilization of Pickering emulsions constructed using myosin from bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis).

Myosin from bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis) as a main type of fish protein possesses a good emulsifying ability. However, whether bighead carp myosin (BCM) could construct stable Pickering emulsions is still unclear. Therefore, myosin particles and Pickering emulsions stabilized by bighead carp myosin (BCMPEs) were analyzed. The surface structure of BCM particles at 0.6 mol/L NaCl treatment was uniform and compact with a contact angle of 86.4 ± 2.7°, exhibiting the potential ability to construct O/W Pickering emulsions. The size and flocculation index (FI) of BCMPEs decreased with the incr

The use of coagulant and natural soil to control cyanobacterial blooms in a tropical reservoir.

Cyanobacterial blooms have been a growing problem in water bodies and attracted attention from researcher and water companies worldwide. Different treatment methods have been researched and applied either inside water treatment plants or directly into reservoirs. We tested a combination of coagulants, polyaluminium chloride (PAC) and iron(III) chloride (FeCl3), and ballasts, luvisol (LUV) and planosol (PLAN), known as the 'Floc and Sink' technique, to remove positively buoyant cyanobacteria from a tropical reservoir water.
