Tending the 'monthly flower:' a qualitative study of menstrual beliefs in Tigray, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Menstruation is a universal aspect of human female reproductive life. Management of menstrual flow presents hygiene challenges to girls and women in low-income countries, especially when they first start their periods. As part of a project to improve menstrual hygiene management in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia, we explored the local understanding of menstruation through focus-group discussions and individual interviews. METHODS: A detailed ethnographic survey of menstrual beliefs was carried out through 40 focus group discussions, 64 in-depth key informant interviews, and 16 indi

The Chickpea Early Flowering 1 (Efl1) Locus Is an Ortholog of Arabidopsis ELF3.

In climates that experience short growing seasons due to drought, heat, or end-of-season frost, early flowering is a highly desirable trait for chickpea (Cicer arietinum). In this study, we mapped, sequenced, and characterized Early flowering3 (Efl3), an ortholog of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) EARLY FLOWERING3 (ELF3) that confers early flowering in chickpea. In a recombinant inbred line population derived from a cross between CDC Frontier and ICCV 96029, this gene was mapped to the site of a quantitative trait locus on Ca5 that explained 59% of flowering time variation under short days.

Arabidopsis thaliana FLOWERING LOCUS D is required for systemic acquired resistance.

Localized infection in plants often induces systemic acquired resistance (SAR), which provides long-term protection against subsequent infections. A signal originating in the SAR-inducing organ is transported to the distal organs, where it stimulates salicylic acid (SA) accumulation and priming, a mechanism that results in more robust activation of defenses in response to subsequent pathogen infection. In recent years, several metabolites that promote long-distance SAR signaling have been identified. However, the mechanism or mechanisms by which plants perceive and respond to the SAR signals a

A field experiment comparing mechanical demands of two pruners for flower cutting.

Manual flower cutting requires repetitive forceful movements that may explain the high incidence of upper-extremity MSDs among workers of the Colombian flower industry. Force demands may be caused by the use of pruners that have not been designed for Colombian workers. We conducted a repeated measures field experimental study (n=16, 69% women, 20 to 60 years old) to compare the mechanical demands during rose cutting of two different pruners (Traditional vs. alternative pruner) at two different cutting heights (elbow vs. over-shoulder). Demands included the perceived comfort, perceived effort a

A syrphid fly uses olfactory cues to find a non-yellow flower.

Syrphid flies are frequent flower visitors, but little is known about the cues they use to find flowers. We determined the importance of visual and olfactory cues in a flight cage bioassay using Cirsium arvense (Asteraceae) flower heads and experienced Episyrphus balteatus (Diptera, Syrphidae). We tested the response of antennae of the flies to headspace inflorescence scent samples by using gas chromatography coupled to electroantennography (GC-EAD). The bioassays revealed that both sexes of experienced flies rely on olfactory, not visual, cues to find C. arvense flower heads. The GC-EAD measu

Alterations in the endogenous ascorbic acid content affect flowering time in Arabidopsis.

Ascorbic acid (AA) protects plants against abiotic stress. Previous studies suggested that this antioxidant is also involved in the control of flowering. To decipher how AA influences flowering time, we studied the four AA-deficient Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) mutants vtc1-1, vtc2-1, vtc3-1, and vtc4-1 when grown under short and long days. These mutants flowered and senesced before the wild type irrespective of the photoperiod, a response that cannot simply be attributed to slightly elevated oxidative stress in the mutants. Transcript profiling of various flowering pathway genes reveale

Legionnaires' disease at a Dutch flower show: prognostic factors and impact of therapy.

After a large outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in the Netherlands, we determined risk factors for intensive care unit (ICU) admission and death and the impact of adequate therapy on ICU-free survival among 141 hospitalized patients. Overall mortality rate was 13%, and ICU mortality rate was 36%. Smoking, temperature >38.5 degrees C, and bilateral infiltrates shown on chest x-ray were independent risk factors for ICU admission or death (all p<0.05). Starting adequate therapy within 24 hours after admission resulted in a higher ICU-free survival rate compared to therapy initiation after 24 hour

[The incidence of occupationally-induced allergic skin diseases in a large flower market].

150 questionnaires as well as epicutaneous tests in 56 individuals from a total of 675 persons cultivating and selling ornamental plants at the largest German flower market revealed that half of those investigated were suffering from allergic contact dermatitis. The leading plant species with sensitizing properties was found to be the chrysanthemum, followed by tulips and Alstroemeria cultivars. Allergic reactions to daffodils and primulas were rarely observed. Most of the reactions obtained with other Compositae species such as arnica, marguerite, sunflower, tansy and yarrow must be interpret

[Development of a PCR method based on CYC2 for specific identification of Bauhinia species in edible flowers].

Bauhinia species are known for their medicinal and nutritional value in south China, with their flowers and tender leaves widely as important food materials and health food ingredients. However, their similar appearance to other plants, especially the toxic species, creates a serious risk of confusion with toxic plants during collection, processing, and marketing. A notable case is the edible B. acuminata, which closely resembles the highly toxic Rhododendron decorum. Multiple poisoning cases have resulted from this confusion in the marketplace, necessitating rapid and reliable identification

Floral dynamics in the protandrous flowers of Bauhinia variegata (Fabaceae): phase-specific morphology, scent, and nectar production.

Protandry in Bauhinia variegata is expressed through coordinated changes in floral morphology, scent composition, secretory activity, and nectar presentation, whereas petal reflectance remains stable; molecular docking further indicates that key phase-associated volatiles are structurally compatible with a bee odourant-binding protein, supporting mechanistic plausibility of olfactory detectability without demonstrating behavioral attraction. Bauhinia variegata exhibits protandrous flowers in which floral morphology, scent production, and nectar presentation change through anthesis. Here, we ex

Impact of Electron Beam Treatment and Storage Duration on Microbial Stability and Phytochemical Integrity in Hemp Flowers.

This study compared the effects of storage time and electron beam (EB) irradiation on microbial counts and chemical stability of dried flowers from two hemp cultivars over 12 weeks. Cannabinoid and terpene content, as well as microbial load, were evaluated at 0, 4, 8, and 12 weeks in EB-irradiated and non-irradiated samples. Microbial count in non-irradiated flowers reached up to 4.1 × 106 colony-forming units (CFU)/g; EB irradiation reduced these levels to <102 CFU/g. Cannabinoid contents were unaffected by EB irradiation and remained stable throughout storage. Terpene content decreased by 8.

Exploring the Therapeutic Potential of Bombax ceiba L. Flowers as Source of Functional Food Development: A Review.

Indigenous medicinal systems often incorporate wild plants and their parts. One such plant is Bombax ceiba L., also known as red silk-cotton tree, native to Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. This large deciduous tree holds cultural, economic, and medicinal significance, valued for its fiber and use in traditional medicinal systems. The flowers of B. ceiba are an excellent source of fiber and carbohydrates and contain vitamins (vitamin C) and minerals (iron, sodium, phosphorus, and calcium). Research has also shown that B. ceiba flowers are rich in phenolic compounds, which possess an
