Topical fluorides play a critical role in the prevention and management of dental caries and have been a cornerstone of evidence-based oral health promotion for decades. A rigorous understanding of the improved acid resistance of fluorapatite, with more recent evidence of the antimicrobial actions of fluorides, has helped establish its key role in caries management. The American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR) recommends using fluoride-containing dentifrices at 1,000 to 1,500 ppm twice daily based on the current evidence. For preschool-aged children, only a sma

Fluoride has performed a central role in the growth over the last fifty years. This report examines the present state of knowledge about fluoride's involvement in preventing dental caries. In recent years, our knowledge of the development of dental caries and the manner of operation of fluoride has been shifted. Dental caries is a constant procedure for enamel demineralization and remineralization, and fluoride plays an important part in this action by acting at the plaque-enamel contact. Fluoride's major method of action is now recognized as posteruptive. Fluoride's post-eruptive activity has

The synthesis of di- and trisubstituted vinyl fluorides with high isomeric purity remains a challenge for organic synthesis. While many methods exist to access these compounds, the separation of the desired isomer from the minor isomer and/or starting materials often is difficult. Herein, we report a practical method to access di- and trisubstituted vinyl fluorides via a selective Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons olefination/hydrolysis, which provides crystalline 2-fluoroacrylic acids in high (>98%) E-isomeric purity. A subsequent silver-catalyzed stereoretentive decarboxylation provides the title subs

On the basis of the first-principles evolutionary crystal structure prediction of stable compounds in the Cu-F system, we predict two experimentally unknown stable phases - Cu2F5 and CuF3. Cu2F5 comprises two interacting magnetic subsystems with Cu atoms in the oxidation states +2 and +3. CuF3 contains magnetic Cu3+ ions forming a lattice by antiferromagnetic coupling. We showed that some or all of Cu3+ ions can be reduced to Cu2+ by electron doping, as in the well-known KCuF3. Significant similarities between the electronic structures calculated in the framework of DFT+U suggest that doped Cu

There are multiple etiologies of increased bone density, including osteopetrosis and fluorosis. Osteopetrosis can either be a malignant autosomal recessive condition found in children or a benign autosomal dominant adult variant; both of which are characterized by decreased bone resorption. In contrast, fluorosis is characterized by increased bone formation secondary to chronic fluoride intoxication, but with a similar clinical manifestations to osteopetrosis. A 70-year-old lady with generalized joint aches, stiffness as well as fatigue, was found to have high bone mineral density and alarming

Dental fluorosis occurs as a result of excess fluoride ingestion during tooth formation. Enamel fluorosis and primary dentin fluorosis can only occur when teeth are forming, and therefore fluoride exposure (as it relates to dental fluorosis) occurs during childhood. In the permanent dentition, this would begin with the lower incisors, which complete mineralization at approximately 2-3 years of age, and end after mineralization of the third molars. The white opaque appearance of fluorosed enamel is caused by a hypomineralized enamel subsurface. With more severe dental fluorosis, pitting and a l

Joining the stable: The first examples of the highly instable selenenyl fluorides RSeF are prepared from the reaction on the tin selenide RSeSnMe(3) with XeF(2). Through the use of extremely large protecting groups (m-terphenyl ligands) which stabilizes the RSeF units against disproportionation, the compounds could be isolated and characterized by NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal structure analysis (see structure).

The behavior of fluoride ions in the human organism is a classic example of double-edged sword. On the one hand the daily supplementation with fluoride is undoubtedly an important preventing factor in protecting teeth from caries, and, as an important mitogenic stimulus for osteoblasts, it may enhance mineral deposition in bone, but on the other hand fluoride, above a threshold concentration, has been demonstrated to be toxic. We present here a brief review of fluoride metabolism and exposure, its use in caries prevention and its effects on bone, followed by an updating about the main hypothes

An assessment of bone turnover at specific sites of the skeleton would allow a better understanding of the pathophysiology of osteoporosis and the direct effects of drugs on bone turnover at common osteoporotic fracture sites. (18)F-Fluoride PET provides a noninvasive method for the assessment of regional bone perfusion and turnover, and offers important advantages over conventional techniques. (18)F-Fluoride PET has been used to examine bone turnover in patients with osteoporosis and other metabolic bone disorders, to compare bone perfusion and turnover between skeletal sites, to assess novel

OBJECTIVES: To review the current literature on the use of sodium fluoride in the treatment of otosclerosis.
DESIGN: A literature review was conducted, searching the Medline and PubMed database from 1966 to 2009, using the terms 'otosclerosis' and 'fluoride'. Article abstracts were reviewed and relevant full articles acquired.
RESULTS: There has been only one double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of the use of sodium fluoride in otosclerosis patients, and this found a reduced incidence of deterioration in hearing after two years in the treatment group. Several case-control series have descr

During an attempt to grow crystals of the nonlinear optical material Cd(3)Zn(3)B(4)O(12) using a KBF(4) flux, crystals of a new cadmium dizinc potassium borate fluoride compound, CdZn(2)KB(2)O(6)F, were unexpectedly isolated. The structure consists of layers constructed of distorted corner-sharing ZnO(3)F tetrahedra and BO(3) triangles. Both Zn and B reside on threefold rotation axes, while the F(-) anion is located at a site of 3.2 symmetry. The Cd(II) (site symmetry 3) and K(+) (site symmetry 3.2) ions occupy six- and nine-coordinate interlayer sites, respectively. The BO(3) triangles and Zn

Fluoride continues to be the cornerstone of dental caries prevention in North America and throughout the world, and there are a variety of sources of fluoride that may contribute to the dietary intakes of fluoride. Although the severe effect of chronic exposures to high levels of fluoride--skeletal fluorosis--is extremely rare in North America, dental fluorosis has become more prevalent. To address the increase in dental fluorosis prevalence, recommendations have been made to reduce fluoride ingestion early in life. These recommendations have included the introduction of lower concentration fl

Fluoride participates in many aspects of calcium phosphate formation in vivo and has enormous effects on the process and on the nature and properties of formed mineral. The most well-documented effect of fluoride is that this ion substitutes for a column hydroxyl in the apatite structure, giving rise to a reduction of crystal volume and a concomitant increase in structural stability. In the process of enamel mineralization during amelogenesis (a unique model for the cell-mediated formation of well-crystallized carbonatoapatite), free fluoride ions in the fluid phase are supposed to accelerate

Fluoride released from methoxyflurane (MOF) during its hepatic and extrahepatic metabolism has been regarded as the major culprit responsible for MOF-induced nephrotoxicity. In the isolated, perfused rat kidney model, admixture of 1500 mumol/l fluoride to the perfusate resulted in tubular and glomerular damage with concomitant anuria. Fluoride administration in Fischer 344 rats in vivo elicited a renal diabetes insipidus-like syndrome that had also been observed in patients after MOF anaesthesia. The renal concentrating defect is most probably due to both dissipation of the corticomedullary os
