Hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans (HrCLM) is a parasitic skin disease caused by the migration of animal hookworm larvae in the epidermis. Since these larvae cannot penetrate the basal membrane of human skin, they remain confined to the epidermis and are unable to develop and complete their lifecycle. By consequence, HrCLM is a self-limiting disease. However, if not treated promptly, the skin pathology may persist for months. HrCLM is endemic in many resource-poor communities in the developing world. In high-income countries, HrCLM occurs sporadically or in the form of small epidemics. T

Mpox, known before now as monkeypox, is a novel zoonotic disease that may infect both humans and animals. It usually spreads by direct contact with bodily fluids, lesion material, or fomites (such as contaminated linens) and prolonged face-to-face contact. Mpox can spread to laboratory animals in a research laboratory through either a general outbreak or during procedures. Animal models are essential as we learn more about how infections occur and how to treat illnesses in both humans and animals which require laboratory procedures with mpox virus. As drug-resistant organisms proliferate, biot

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: There is limited literature examining cutaneous warts (CW) and molluscum contagiosum (MC) together to identify common risk factors for their transmission in the pediatric population, and the epidemiological findings vary significantly among authors. This work aims to identify the determinants contributing to the spread of these diseases among children and to consolidate epidemiological data from multiple articles into a single, comprehensive overview.
METHODS: English literature publications in PubMed were reviewed. Works related to sexual, oral, or vertical transmission

As the primary agents of skin and soft tissue infections in animals, Staphylococcus spp and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are among the most formidable bacterial pathogens encountered by veterinarians. Staphylococci are commensal inhabitants of the surfaces of healthy skin and mucous membranes, which may gain access to deeper cutaneous tissues by circumventing the stratum corneum's barrier function. Compromised barrier function occurs in highly prevalent conditions such as atopic dermatitis, endocrinopathies, and skin trauma. P aeruginosa is an environmental saprophyte that constitutively expresses v

Disinfecting surfaces with chlorine is commonly conducted in cholera outbreaks to prevent ongoing fomite-based transmission, yet evidence gaps have led to contradictory guidance. In this study, we tested the efficacy of spraying and wiping chlorine on five representatives non-porous and five porous surfaces to remove Vibrio cholerae. In total, 120 disinfection tests were run in replicate on carriers inoculated with 1.02 × 107-1.73 × 108 V. cholerae CFU/cm2. Surfaces disinfected by spraying 0.2% chlorine had >3 log reduction value (LRV) on 7/10 and 9/10 surfaces at 1 and 10 min, respectively; a

Development in and transmission of hemoparasites by tick vectors are phenomena closely synchronized with the tick feeding cycle. In all known life cycles, initial infection of tick tissues occurs in midgut epithelial cells and transmission is effected as ticks feed after parasites have developed and multiplied in salivary glands. Many factors reviewed affect development and transmission of hemoparasites by ticks including age of ticks, artificial temperature, climate and/or season, tick stage or sex, hemoparasite variation, concurrent infection of ticks with other pathogens, host cell suscepti

The authors propose to consider infectious diseases as mass clinical conditions in both normative-legal and medical contexts. Peculiarities of commission and comprehensive inspections carried out in situations of massive infectious morbidity among servicemen are illustrated by examples of the work of state forensic medical organizations and investigative authorities of the Russian Defense Ministry.

Background & objectives A marked increase in resistance and frequency of occurrence has led to changes in the clinical and epidemiological patterns of dermatophytosis. This study was conducted to assess the current distribution pattern of various species of dermatophytes, their seasonal variation, and distribution based on lesion site and occupational status in outpatients attending a tertiary care hospital in Southern Rajasthan. Methods A cross-sectional observational study was conducted over one year using skin, hair, and nail samples from individuals clinically suspected of dermatophytosis.

Monkeypox (Mpox) is a re-emerging zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV), a double-stranded DNA virus of the Orthopoxvirus genus. Initially confined to Central and West Africa, Mpox has recently spread to non-endemic regions, raising global health concerns. This review provides a comprehensive update on the virus's structure, transmission, replication, clinical features, diagnostic methods, treatment options, and vaccination strategies. The Mpox virion is brick-shaped, enveloped, and replicates entirely in the cytoplasm using virus-encoded enzymes. Transmission occurs through cl

Scabies is a skin disease caused by the parasite Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis, which is primarily transmitted via direct skin or sexual contact or, less commonly, via contact with infested fomites. In Korea, the incidence of scabies has decreased from approximately 50,000 cases per year in 2010 to about 30,000 cases per year in 2021. However, outbreaks are consistently observed in residential facilities, such as nursing homes, especially among older adults. The clinical manifestations of scabies vary based on the patient's age, health status, the number of mites, and the route of transmissio

Respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19, present a serious threat to endangered wild chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) populations. In some parts of sub-Saharan Africa, chimpanzee tracking is a popular tourism activity, offering visitors a chance to view apes in their natural habitats. Chimpanzee tourism is an important source of revenue and thus benefits conservation; however, chimpanzee tracking may also increase the risk of disease transmission from people to chimpanzees directly (e.g., via aerosol transmission) or indirectly (e.g., through the environment or via fomites). This study assessed

Diarrheal diseases are a leading cause of under-five mortality and morbidity in sub-Saharan Africa. Quantitative exposure modeling provides opportunities to investigate the relative importance of fecal-oral transmission routes (e.g. hands, water, food) responsible for diarrheal disease. Modeling, however, requires accurate descriptions of individuals' interactions with the environment (i.e., activity data). Such activity data are largely lacking for people in low-income settings. In the present study, we collected activity data and microbiological sampling data to develop a quantitative microb

Trichomonas tenax is an anaerobic flagellate usually found in the oral cavity of humans and domestic animals. It is very likely to be transmitted through kissing, sharing saliva, contaminated utensils, and water. However, research on its transmission dynamics is scarce. Hence, there is a need to identify potential knowledge gaps in T. tenax transmission for future research and emphasize the importance of the One Health approach in controlling the spread of this flagellar protozoan. Trichomonas tenax has been found in humans, dogs, cats, horses, and birds at various body sites, including the lu

Clade 2.3.4.4b highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) viruses have caused large outbreaks within avian populations on five continents, with concurrent spillover into a variety of mammalian species. Mutations associated with mammalian adaptation have been sporadically identified in avian isolates, and more frequently among mammalian isolates following infection. Reports of human infection with A(H5N1) viruses following contact with infected wildlife have been reported on multiple continents, highlighting the need for pandemic risk assessment of these viruses. In this study, the pathogenicity

We report the inactivation of SARS CoV-2 and its surrogate-Human coronavirus OC43 (HCoV-OC43), on representative porous (KN95 mask material) and nonporous materials (aluminum and polycarbonate) using a Compact Portable Plasma Reactor (CPPR). The CPPR is a compact (48 cm3), lightweight, portable and scalable device that forms Dielectric Barrier Discharge which generates ozone using surrounding atmosphere as input gas, eliminating the need of source gas tanks. Iterative CPPR exposure time experiments were performed on inoculated material samples in 3 operating volumes. Minimum CPPR exposure time

Scabies is a contagious parasitic skin disease caused by Sarcoptes scabiei infestation which can be transmitted through direct or indirect contact. WHO classified scabies as a neglected tropical disease. The prevalence of scabies is high in certain countries ranging from 32.1% to 74%, especially in crowded conditions such as prisons, boarding schools, and orphanages. Indonesia is one of the most heavily affected countries worldwide. Scabies might cause great impact on patients, which includes decreased concentration and academic achievement at school, social stigma, sleep disturbances, and dec

Monkeypox is a viral, zoonotic, emerging infectious disease that has become the most significant orthopoxviral infection among humans since the eradication of smallpox. It is endemic in Central and West Africa, and since May 2022 it has caused a multi-country outbreak in six continents. So far, no clinical cases of this disease have been observed in Poland. Monkeypox can be transmitted by any person, regardless of gender identity or sexual preferences, through direct contact with the secretion from skin lesions or through fomites contaminated with infectious material. Therefore, people infecte
