Development of new measures to assess household nutrition security, and choice in dietary characteristics.

The purpose of this study was to preliminarily develop novel self-administered measures to assess nutrition security and choice in dietary characteristics. Measures were piloted in a convenience sample of households at risk for food insecurity in the United States. The survey included the new measures, construct validation variables (household food security, self-reported general health, and dietary variables), and demographic questions. Exploratory factor analysis was used to assess dimensionality, internal (Cronbach's alpha (CA)), and construct validity were assessed (Spearman's correlation)

The impact of nutrition education on food insecurity, food literacy, and dietary intake: a single-arm pre-post intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Poor food literacy behaviours may exacerbate food insecurity. Therefore, food literacy interventions have been increasingly utilized to improve food security and enhance dietary intake among low-socioeconomic adults. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a nutrition education intervention on food security, food literacy, and dietary intake among low-income Saudi families. METHODS: This single-arm pre-post intervention study was conducted between June and August 2024. Seventy-three adults completed the pre-survey and 67 completed the post-survey. The survey included questions

Food Insecurity Is Associated with Diet Quality in Pregnancy: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Household food insecurity (HFI) and poorer prenatal diet quality are both associated with adverse perinatal outcomes. However, research assessing the relationship between HFI and diet quality in pregnancy is limited. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted to examine the relationship between HFI and diet quality among 1540 pregnant women in Australia. Multiple linear regression models were used to examine the associations between HFI severity (marginal, low, and very low food security compared to high food security) and diet quality and variety, adjusting for age, education, equivalised

Executive functioning is linked to feeding practices and food insecurity in Head Start mothers.

Lower executive functioning is associated with more reactive, coercive general parenting practices. Parents who experience poverty, a chronic stressor, may have compromised executive functioning that impacts parenting practices, but less is known about the impact on parent feeding practices. This study examined associations between maternal executive functioning and feeding practices among families living in low-income contexts. Participants included 137 mothers of children enrolled in Head Start who completed the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult version, Child Feeding Que

Food access and diet quality independently predict nutritional status among people living with HIV in Uganda.

OBJECTIVE: Although undernutrition is recognized as a risk factor for mortality among people living with HIV (PLWHIV), even among those initiating antiretroviral therapy, few studies have explored the underlying determinants of undernutrition. The objectives of the present study were to: (i) examine the independent association between household food security, individual diet quality and nutritional status; and (ii) determine if any association between food security and nutritional status is mediated through diet quality. DESIGN: Cross-sectional baseline survey. SETTING: Gulu and Soroti distr

Food Insecurity, Memory, and Dementia Among US Adults Aged 50 Years and Older.

IMPORTANCE: Despite existing federal programs to increase access to food, food insecurity is common among US older adults. Food insecurity may affect Alzheimer disease and Alzheimer disease-related dementias via multiple mechanisms, yet there is almost no quantitative research evaluating this association. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether food insecurity in older adults is associated with later-life cognitive outcomes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study of US residents aged 50 years and older from the US Health and Retirement Study was restricted to respondents with food insecu

From policy presence to policy performance: implementation gaps in Philippine food and nutrition systems under systemic shocks.

This commentary examines the gap between the presence of food and nutrition policies and their actual outcomes in the Philippines, with emphasis on how implementation constraints and systemic shocks influence nutrition security. Despite the existence of comprehensive policies and legislative frameworks addressing malnutrition, the country continues to experience persistent stunting, micronutrient deficiencies and increasing overweight and obesity. Rising food prices, energy-related inflation, and economic instability further limit access to nutrient-dense foods, particularly among vulnerable p

Research on the impact of climate change on food production resilience in China.

Climate polarization threatens the food production stabilization and economic development worldwide. As a major agricultural producer, China faces increasing risks to its food security. This study examines the effects of accumulated temperature and precipitation anomaly level on food production resilience, with crop diversity potentially playing a moderating role. To this end, it uses fixed-effects and moderating-effects models based on official statistics from 31 Chinese administrative regions (2010-2022). First, China's overall resilience in food production has shown an upward trend, fluctua
