Machine learning-based forecasting of daily acute ischemic stroke admissions using weather data.

The climate crisis underscores the need for weather-based predictive analytics in healthcare, as weather factors contribute to ~11% of the global stroke burden. Therefore, we developed machine learning models using locoregional weather data to forecast daily acute ischemic stroke (AIS) admissions. An AIS cohort of 7914 patients admitted between 2015 and 2021 at the tertiary University Medical Center Mannheim, Germany, with a 600,000-population catchment area, was geospatially matched to German Weather Service data. Poisson regression, boosted generalized additive models, support vector machine

A digital twin based forecasting framework for power flow management in DC microgrids.

The ability to forecast system conditions is integral to the definition and functionality of digital twins. While forecasting methods have been explored for use in digital twin systems, the integration of feedback mechanisms for real-time forecasting and in-situ decision-making in DC microgrids has not been extensively investigated. This research develops a modular forecasting framework tailored for digital twins in DC microgrids to enable real-time monitoring, online forecasting, and decision-making. DC microgrids, characterized by dynamic load variations, benefit from advanced predictive cap

Forecasting COVID-19, influenza, and RSV hospitalizations over winter 2023-4 in England.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal respiratory viruses cause substantial pressure on healthcare systems, particularly over winter. System managers can mitigate the impact on patient care when they anticipate hospital admissions due to these viruses. Hospitalization forecasts were used widely during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Now, resurgent seasonal respiratory pathogens add complexity to system planning. We describe how a suite of forecasts for respiratory pathogens, embedded in national and regional decision-making structures, were used to mitigate the impact on hospital systems and patient care. METHODS: W

Adaptive food price forecasting improves public information in times of rapid economic change.

The advent of COVID-19 ended an era of stable US retail food prices that followed the world food price crisis of 2010-2012. Pandemic-related disruptions, avian influenza outbreaks, and the Russia-Ukraine war drove 2022 food-at-home inflation to its highest rate since 1974 (11.4%). In 2023, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) economists responded to these changes by updating food price forecasts using statistical learning protocols to select time series models and prediction intervals to convey their uncertainty. We characterise the public good provided by these "adaptive" inflation forecasts

A newly developed ferroptosis-related gene signature for forecasting prognosis in uveal melanoma.

BACKGROUND: Uveal melanoma is the most common primary intraocular malignancy in adults, characterized by significant inter-patient heterogeneity and poor long-term prognosis. Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death, has emerged as a promising avenue for cancer therapy, yet its role in UVM remains insufficiently explored. METHODS: We systematically screened ferroptosis-related genes (FRGs) associated with UVM prognosis by integrating univariate Cox regression, LASSO regression, and Random Forest algorithms. A prognostic signature was constructed and validated using data fro

Impact-based forecasting of tropical cyclone-related human displacement to support anticipatory action.

Tropical cyclones (TCs) displace millions every year. While TCs pose hardships and threaten lives, their negative impacts can be reduced by anticipatory actions like evacuation and humanitarian aid coordination. In addition to weather forecasts, impact forecast enables more effective response by providing richer information on the numbers and locations of people at risk of displacement. We introduce a fully open-source implementation of a globally consistent and regionally calibrated TC-related displacement forecast at low computational costs, combining meteorological forecast with population

Domain Adaptation-Based Deep Learning Model for Forecasting and Diagnosis of Glaucoma Disease.

The main factor causing irreversible blindness is glaucoma. Early detection greatly reduces the risk of further vision loss. To address this problem, we developed a domain adaptation-based deep learning model called Glaucoma Domain Adaptation (GDA) based on 66,742 fundus photographs collected from 3272 eyes of 1636 subjects. GDA learns domain-invariant and domain-specific representations to extract both general and specific features. We also developed a progressive weighting mechanism to accurately transfer the source domain knowledge while mitigating the transfer of negative knowledge from th

Climate-based modelling and forecasting of dengue in three endemic departments of Peru.

Amid profound climate change, incidence of dengue continues to rise and expand in distribution across the world. Here, we analysed dengue in three coastal departments of Peru which have recently experienced public health emergencies during the worst dengue crises in Latin American history. We developed a climate-based spatiotemporal modelling framework to model monthly incidence of new dengue cases in Piura, Tumbes, and Lambayeque over 140 months from 2010 to 2021. The framework enabled accurate description of in-sample and out-of-sample dengue incidence trends across the departments, as well

Forecasting influenza hospital admissions within English sub-regions using hierarchical generalised additive models.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal influenza places a substantial burden annually on healthcare services. Policies during the COVID-19 pandemic limited the transmission of seasonal influenza, making the timing and magnitude of a potential resurgence difficult to ascertain and its impact important to forecast. METHODS: We have developed a hierarchical generalised additive model (GAM) for the short-term forecasting of hospital admissions with a positive test for the influenza virus sub-regionally across England. The model incorporates a multi-level structure of spatio-temporal splines, weekly cycles in admis

Enhancing urban flood forecasting in drainage systems using dynamic ensemble-based data mining.

This study presents a novel approach for urban flood forecasting in drainage systems using a dynamic ensemble-based data mining model which has yet to be utilised properly in this context. The proposed method incorporates an event identification technique and rainfall feature extraction to develop weak learner data mining models. These models are then stacked to create a time-series ensemble model using a decision tree algorithm and confusion matrix-based blending method. The proposed model was compared to other commonly used ensemble models in a real-world urban drainage system in the UK. The

Predictive risk models for forecasting arrhythmic outcomes in Brugada syndrome: A focused review.

Brugada syndrome (BrS) is a rare disorder characterized by coved or saddle-shaped ST-segment elevation in the right precordial leads on the electrocardiogram. Risk stratification in BrS remains challenging. A number of clinical, electrocardiographic, programmed ventricular stimulation and genetic risk factors have been identified as important predictors of future major arrhythmic events. There is a positive association between the number of risk factors and arrhythmic events. Hence, a multi-parametric approach would provide comprehensive risk assessment and more accurate risk stratification, a

Forecasting Postoperative Delirium in Older Adult Patients with Fast-and-Frugal Decision Trees.

Postoperative delirium (POD) is associated with increased complication and mortality rates, particularly among older adult patients. However, guideline recommendations for POD detection and management are poorly implemented. Fast-and-frugal trees (FFTrees), which are simple prediction algorithms, may be useful in this context. We compared the capacity of simple FFTrees with two more complex models-namely, unconstrained classification trees (UDTs) and logistic regression (LogReg)-for the prediction of POD among older surgical patients in the perioperative setting. Models were trained and tested
