The effects of urethan on ICR/JCL mouse limbs were examined in forelimbs of day-11 embryos cultured in concentrations of 0, 50, and 100 mug/ml for one to four days, and in forelimbs of day-12 embryos and in fore- and hind limbs of day-13 embryos in 0, 10, 50, and 100 mug/ml for one to four days. Urethan did not cause digital malformations on day-11 limbs but induced syndactyly in day-12 forelimbs and polydactyly in day-12 forelimbs and day-13-fore- and hind limbs. The polydactyly may have been due to effects on mesenchymal cells producing localized cell proliferation, whereas syndactyly may ha

BACKGROUND: Distal limb wraps are widely used during equine exercise, but their effects on post-exercise kinematics and movement symmetry remain poorly defined.
AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To determine whether elastic and fleece distal limb wraps alter temporal stride variables, distal limb kinematics, and axial movement symmetry after standardised round-pen exercise.
METHODS: Six adult horses completed a prospective crossover study with three conditions: no wraps, elastic wraps, and fleece wraps. Wraps were applied bilaterally to all distal limbs at an initial pressure of 20 mmHg. After 20 minutes of

CASE SUMMARY: A 12-year-old neutered female domestic shorthair cat was presented with bilateral progressive forelimb lameness that was unresponsive to anti-inflammatory drugs. Bilateral carpal flexural deformity with hyperflexion of multiple toes of the right forelimb was observed. In the absence of abnormalities detected on radiographs and ultrasound, a bilateral contracture of the carpal and digital flexor muscles was diagnosed. Treatment consisted of single-session bilateral selective tenectomies (5 mm) of the flexor carpi ulnaris, flexor carpi radialis and superficial digital flexor muscle

BACKGROUND: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) paired with forelimb motor training enhances reorganization of movement representations in the motor cortex. Previous studies have shown an inverted-U relationship between VNS intensity and plasticity in other brain areas, such that moderate intensity VNS yields greater cortical plasticity than low or high intensity VNS. However, the relationship between VNS intensity and plasticity in the motor cortex is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: In this study we sought to test the hypothesis that VNS intensity exhibits an inverted-U relationship with the degree of motor c

The spinal, trigeminal and cortical climbing fibre projection to the lateral vermis of the cerebellar anterior lobe in the cat has been investigated. The b zone, which occupies a one mm wide band in the lateral vermis, receives a somatotopically arranged input. Successively more rostral segments (tail, hindlimb, thorax, forelimb and trigeminal nerves) project to successively more medial microzones. The b zone receives an input through each of three spino-olivocerebellar paths (SOCPs) ascending in the ventral, dorsal and dorsolateral funiculi (VF, DF and DLF). In the b zone, the hindlimb input

Specific features of neurological deficit and changes in the cellular composition of tracheal lymphoid structures during the immediate stage (day 1) of hemorrhagic stroke were studied in rats with various behavioral parameters. Modeling of hemorrhage in the left caudate nucleus of the brain was followed by the development of motor disturbances in the forelimb use asymmetry test and corner rotation paradigm. These animals preferred to use the left forelimb (ipsilateral to the side of hemorrhage) to lean on the cylinder wall. The frequency of using the right forelimb or both forelimbs was reduce

A fusion defect of the proximal and middle phalanges of both hindlimbs, osteochondrosis dissecans of the distal interphalangeal joints of the forelimbs, and subluxation of all 4 distal interphalangeal joints occurred in a Standardbred filly. Lameness was the first abnormality noted and was observed at one week of age in the left forelimb and progressed until all 4 limbs were affected by 5 weeks of age. On radiographs of both forelimbs, the distal interphalangeal joints were subluxated with irregularity and lucency of subchondral bone. On radiographs of the distal hindlimbs, there was a subluxa

An animal that has stepped over an obstacle with its forelimbs uses a memory of the obstacle to guide the hind limbs so that they also clear the obstacle, even in situations in which long pauses are introduced between forelimb and hind limb stepping. To further clarify the features of hind limb obstacle clearance memory, the present study examined hind limb obstacle clearance in the horse. A rider guided horses over obstacles and paused the horse over obstacles in tests that examined the relationship between forelimb and hind limb stepping, with the following results. First, the horses display

BACKGROUND: SCI is a time-sensitive debilitating neurological condition without treatment options. Although the central nervous system is not programmed for effective endogenous repairs or regeneration, neuroplasticity partially compensates for the dysfunction consequences of SCI.
OBJECTIVE AND HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of our study is to investigate whether early induction of hypothermia impacts neuronal tissue compensatory mechanisms. Our hypothesis is that although neuroplasticity happens within the neuropathways, both above (forelimbs) and below (hindlimbs) the site of spinal cord injury (S

A 7-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat presented with a swollen right forelimb and mild lameness. On physical examination, the mass was palpable in the right humeral region, and the cat exhibited pain on palpation. Radiography revealed an expansile osteolytic lesion at the proximal end of the right humerus. Computed tomography (CT) revealed an expansile bony mass on the proximal end of the right humerus and a mild periosteal reaction around the acromion of the scapula. Amputation of the right forelimb, including the scapula and removal of the axillary lymph node, were strongly recom

We investigated the effect of neonatal nerve lesions on cerebral motor cortex organization by comparing the cortical motor representation of normal adult rats with adult rats that had one forelimb removed on the day of birth. Mapping of cerebral neocortex with electrical stimulation revealed an altered relationship between the motor cortex and the remaining muscles. Whereas distal forelimb movements are normally elicited at the lowest threshold in the motor cortex forelimb area, the same stimuli activated shoulder and trunk muscles in experimental animals. In addition, an expanded cortical rep

To analyze the organization of corticostriatal motor inputs, we examined the neuronal responses in the putamen (Put) to stimulation in the primary motor cortex (MI) and the supplementary motor area (SMA). Stimulating electrodes were chronically implanted in the distal and proximal parts of the forelimb representation of the MI and in the forelimb representation of the SMA in Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata). Stimulation in the MI and SMA evoked orthodromic spike discharges in both phasically active and tonically active Put neurons. The latency of excitation evoked by MI stimulation was shorte

Lung volume influences the mechanical action of the primary inspiratory and expiratory muscles by affecting their precontraction length, alignment with the rib cage, and mechanical coupling to agonistic and antagonistic muscles. We have previously shown that the canine pectoral muscles exert an expiratory action on the rib cage when the forelimbs are at the torso's side and an inspiratory action when the forelimbs are held elevated. To determine the effect of lung volume on intrathoracic pressure changes produced by the canine pectoral muscles, we performed isolated bilateral supramaximal elec

BACKGROUND: Although there is currently no cure for paralysis due to spinal cord injury (SCI), the highest treatment priority is restoring arm and hand function for people with cervical SCI. Preclinical animal models provide an opportunity to test innovative treatments, but severe cervical injury models require significant time and effort to assess responses to novel interventions. Moreover, there is no behavioral task that can assess forelimb movement in rats with severe cervical SCI unable to perform antigravity movements.
NEW METHOD: We developed a novel lever pressing task for rats with s

Ungual cartilage ossification in the forelimb is a common finding in horses. Subtle abnormalities associated with the ungual cartilages can be difficult to identify on radiographs. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings of 22 horses (23 forelimbs) with a fracture of the distal phalanx and ossified ungual cartilage were characterized and graded. All horses had a forelimb fracture. Eleven involved a left forelimb (seven medial; four lateral), and 12 involved a right forelimb (five medial; seven lateral). All fractures were nonarticular, simple in configuration, and nondisplaced. The fractures

Antidromic stimulation and intra-axonal injections of horseradish peroxidase have been used to investigate axonal branching and termination of single C3-C4 propriospinal neurones (PNs) that project to the forelimb segments (C6-Th1). Branching at several spinal cord levels and terminations were found in laminae VI-VIII and IX. With respect to terminations in laminae VII and IX, 3 patterns were observed: (i) termination only in lamina IX, (ii) only in lamina VII in the region of Ia inhibitory interneurones and (iii) in both laminae VII and IX. These findings are consistent with previous results

Acetazolamide, a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, induced right forelimb ectrodactyly in rat fetuses when the mothers were treated on late day 10 and early day 11 of gestation. Coadministration of the selective alpha-1-adrenergic agonist phenylephrine significantly increased the incidence of acetazolamide-induced right forelimb ectrodactyly while failing to induce the lesion when administered alone. Pretreatment with the alpha-adrenergic antagonists phenoxybenzamine and prazosin prevented the phenylephrine-induced increase in right forelimb ectrodactyly. In addition, treatment with either phenoxy

We recently demonstrated that a long-lasting transmission defect in cortical synapses caused motor dysfunction after brief middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion in the rat despite rapid recovery of axons. In this experimental study, we have examined the impact of differential recovery of synapses and axons on generation of motor-evoked potentials (MEP) recorded from contralateral paralyzed and ipsilateral unaffected muscles, to gain insight into mechanisms of MEPs recorded from stroke patients by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). MEPs generated by focal electrical stimulation of the fo

Focal spinal muscular atrophy evolved rapidly in two German Shepherd pups 2 weeks after birth. By 1 month, the male and female littermates had developed a valgus deformity of the right forelimb, a flexed carpus, and arm and forearm muscle weakness and atrophy. In the male, less severe left forelimb weakness and wasting also occurred, and bilateral forelimb denervation potentials were recorded. Postmortem study of the male revealed asymmetric loss and degeneration of motoneurons in the cervical spinal cord intumescence. Degenerating neurons appeared vacuolated or chromatolytic. Chromatolysis wa

Several types of limb deformities were induced by vitamin A in B. melanostictus. These ranged from total suppression of all the limbs (ectromelia) to partial development of either the forelimb or the hindlimb or both (mesomelia) to reduction or absence of digits in either the forelimbs or hindlimbs or both and absence of long bones in either the forelimbs or hindlimbs or both (phocomelia) or duplication of the hindlimbs (polymelia). All the limb abnormalities were induced in the developing limbs of the tail amputated tadpoles of B. melanostictus following vitamin A treatment, which is all the
